  • We propose a novel approach to classify fingerprints using the extracted adaptive core block for improving classification performance of incomplete fingerprints in this paper. We compute representative directions from fingerprint images by the block unit and learn horizontal and vertical Markov models by deciding the center position of a fingerprint image based on the expert knowledge. The center block of a test image is the block has the highest probability after comparing the Markov model with $11{\times}11$ blocks. The proposed approach can effectively classify incomplete fingerprints using the optimal center block.

  • The performance of slopes during earthquake is often accessed in terms of permanent deformation. In the assessment of permanent deformation, Newmark-type rigid block analysis is widely used. Original Newmark-type block approach, however, assumes the potential sliding mass to be rigid, and has been criticized to be potentially unconservative. The paper reviews analytically the impact of this noncompliance assumption on computed permanent deformations. The results indicate that there is a simple criterion that can be used to determine the level of conservativeness of the rigid block approach in cases of gently-sloping slip surfaces and retaining walls.

  • In the design of composite aircraft structures, it is very important to set material allowables and design values, which take into account certification. And when determining the material allowable and design value of composite structures, the static strength, damage tolerance requirements, and environmental effects should be considered. The building block approach has been applied to the civil and military aviation industry for a long time and provides the principal certification methodology. This current certification methodology is based on extensive testing including coupon, element, sub-component, and full scale test. In this paper, some examples of composite allowable tests have been presented and the fundamental background and application methods of the building block approach have been presented.

  • Neurolytic splanchnic nerve block is effective for treatment of intractable upper abdominal cancer pain. Conventional approach for splanchnic nerve block is conducted in the prone position to ensure proper orientation and to allow insertion of needles on each side of the vertebral body. However, the prone position has some technical disadvantages as this position is frequently poorly tolerated by a majority of patients with advanced cancer due to severe abdominal pain, ascites and so on. Male patient, 53-year old with transverse colon cancer, carcinomatosis peritonei and $L_1,\;L_2$ vertebral body metastasis, was admitted for treatment of severe right upper quadrant and right iliac crest pain. We performed neurolytic splanchnic nerve block with transdiscal technique in the lateral decubitus position under fluoroscopic guidance, and well noted the usefulness and the advantage of this technique. The benefits of this technique are safe, simple and effective because the lateral position is better tolerated by patients and makes bony landmarks more accessible during fluoroscopy.

  • Block of superior hypogastric plexus has been advocated as a useful technique in the palliation of various of pelvic pain syndromes. This technique has been performed under fluroscopic or CT guidance using bilateral placement of needles. We performed a modification of transdiscal approach with the patient in oblique position permitting successful superior hypogastric plexus block using a single needle placed under fluoroscopic guidance. Our experience suggest transdiscal approach performed in oblique position allows easier, safer, and more accurate needle placement for superior hypogastric plexus block.

  • Superior hypogastric plexus block is extensively recognized as a unique nerve block method for the treatment of low abdominal pain originating from organs of the pelvic area. This block is difficult to perform on older patients, especially those with osteophyte, as they will experience a high degree of pain with this technique. Therefore we reported trans-discal superior hypogastric plexus by method of approach needle through disc. This method is less painful to the patient as compared to bilateral approach; and easier to place the needle tip at precise and proper location.

  • The scale of graph data has been increased rapidly because of the growth of mobile Internet applications and the proliferation of social network services. This brings upon the imminent necessity of efficient distributed and parallel graph processing approach since the size of these large-scale graphs are easily over a capacity of a single machine. Currently, there are two popular parallel graph processing approaches, vertex-centric graph processing and block centric processing. While a vertex-centric graph processing approach can easily be applied to the parallel processing system, a block-centric graph processing approach is proposed to compensate the drawbacks of the vertex-centric approach. In these systems, the initial quality of graph partition affects to the overall performance significantly. However, it is a very difficult problem to divide the graph into optimal states at the initial phase. Thus, several dynamic load balancing techniques have been studied that suggest the progressive partitioning during the graph processing time. In this paper, we present a load balancing algorithms for the block-centric graph processing approach where most of dynamic load balancing techniques are focused on vertex-centric systems. Our proposed algorithm focus on an improvement of the graph partition quality by dynamically reassigning blocks in runtime, and suggests block split strategy for escaping local optimum solution.

  • Background: Recently, ultrasound has been commonly used. Ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block (IBPB) by posterior approach is more commonly used because anterior approach has been reported to have the risk of phrenic nerve injury. However, posterior approach also has the risk of causing nerve injury because there are risks of encountering dorsal scapular nerve (DSN) and long thoracic nerve (LTN). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of encountering DSN and LTN during ultrasound-guided IBPB by posterior approach. Methods: A total of 70 patients who were scheduled for shoulder surgery were enrolled in this study. After deciding insertion site with ultrasound, awake ultrasound-guided IBPB with nerve stimulator by posterior approach was performed. Incidence of muscle twitches (rhomboids, levator scapulae, and serratus anterior muscles) and current intensity immediately before muscle twitches disappeared were recorded. Results: Of the total 70 cases, DSN was encountered in 44 cases (62.8%) and LTN was encountered in 15 cases (21.4%). Both nerves were encountered in 10 cases (14.3%). Neither was encountered in 21 cases (30.4%). The average current measured immediately before the disappearance of muscle twitches was 0.44 mA and 0.50 mA at DSN and LTN, respectively. Conclusions: Physicians should be cautious on the risk of injury related to the anatomical structures of nerves, including DSN and LTN, during ultrasound-guided IBPB by posterior approach. Nerve stimulator could be another option for a safer intervention. Moreover, if there is a motor response, it is recommended to select another way to secure better safety.

  • Background: Neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) is a typical treatment for severe epigastric cancer pain, but the therapeutic effect is often affected by the variation of local anatomical structures induced by the tumor. Greater and lesser splanchnic nerve neurolysis (SNN) had similar effects to the NCPB, and was recently performed with a paravertebral approach under the image guidance, or with the transdiscal approach under the guidance of computed tomography. This study observed the feasibility and safety of SNN via a transdiscal approach under fluoroscopic guidance. Methods: The follow-up records of 34 patients with epigastric cancer pain who underwent the splanchnic nerve block via the T11-12 transdiscal approach under fluoroscopic guidance were investigated retrospectively. The numerical rating scale (NRS), the patient satisfaction scale (PSS) and quality of life (QOL) of the patient, the dose of morphine consumed, and the occurrence and severity of adverse events were recorded preoperatively and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 2 months after surgery. Results: Compared with the preoperative scores, the NRS scores and daily morphine consumption decreased and the QOL and PSS scores increased at each postoperative time point (P < 0.001). No patients experienced serious complications. Conclusions: SNN via the transdiscal approach under flouroscopic guidance was an effective, safe, and easy operation for epigastric cancer pain, with fewer complications.

  • The energy-based approach to predict the fatigue crack growth behavior under constant and variable amplitude loading (VAL) of the aluminum alloy 2024 T351 has been investigated and detailed analyses discussed. Firstly, the plastic strain energy was determined per cycle for different block load tests. The relationship between the crack advance and hysteretic energy dissipated per block can be represented by a power law. Then, an analytical model to estimate the lifetime for each spectrum is proposed. The results obtained are compared with the experimentally measured results and the models proposed by Klingbeil's model and Tracey's model. The evolution of the hysteretic energy dissipated per block is shown similar with that observed under constant amplitude loading.
