  • In the case of large combined weapon systems, such as submarines, the application, and verification of methods of setting the reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) target values for conventional weapon systems are limited. Submarines are complex weapon systems with the characteristics of the diversity of operation mode summary and mission profiles (OMS/MP) as well as equipment complexity because they are composed of multiple weapon systems, such as sonar systems and armed systems. Therefore, this study analyzed the development cases of existing weapon systems, i.e., the RAM target value-setting cases, and derived the problems and limitations of the cases to present measures to improve the setting and verification of the ram target values of submarines. In addition, submarines operate around the world and have different operating and maintenance conditions. Therefore, a submarine's ram target values should be set and verified centering on the mission essential equipment and mission critical equipment, instead of all components that constitute weapon systems. This study examined a method to verify the required performance RAM target-value setting, considering the characteristics of submarines as well as the physical performance requirements for the systems and equipment of submarines that must be considered when implementing national defense acquisition projects for submarines.

  • The Yeong-dong heavy snowfall forecast supporting system has been developed during the last several years. In order to construct the conceptual model, we have examined the characteristics of heavy snowfalls in the Yeong-dong region classified into three precipitation patterns. This system is divided into two parts: forecast and observation. The main purpose of the forecast part is to produce value-added data and to display the geography based features reprocessing the numerical model results associated with a heavy snowfall. The forecast part consists of four submenus: synoptic fields, regional fields, precipitation and snowfall, and verification. Each offers guidance tips and data related with the prediction of heavy snowfalls, which helps weather forecasters understand better their meteorological conditions. The observation portion shows data of wind profiler and snow monitoring for application to nowcasting. The heavy snowfall forecast supporting system was applied and tested to the heavy snowfall event on 28 February 2006. In the beginning stage, this event showed the characteristics of warm precipitation pattern in the wind and surface pressure fields. However, we expected later on the weak warm precipitation pattern because the center of low pressure passing through the Straits of Korea was becoming weak. It was appeared that Gangwon Short Range Prediction System simulated a small amount of precipitation in the Yeong-dong region and this result generally agrees with the observations.

  • The beta-galactosidase of Aspergillus niger CAD 1 described in previous report was immobilized to cellulose triacetate. The optimal conditions for immobilization of the enzyme were obtained when 13%(v/v) of the soluble enzyme (349 unit/ml) was entrapped in fiber prepared from 10%(w/v) cellulose triacetate in methylene chloride. The optimal temperature and pH for the activity of the immobilized enzyme were $45^{\circ}C$ and 4.5, respectively, which stowed the same values as those of the soluble enzyme. It was found that Km of the immobilized enzyme for lacotse exhibited high value compared with that of the soluble enzyme. The immobilized enzyme showed good storage stability, reusability, and also hydrolysis of lactose when introduced into skim milk and acidic whey.

  • This paper analyzed the effect of transaction costs on the prices and trading volumes at the initial stage of emission markets and also examined how the size of the effect differs depending on the characteristics of the transactions. We built trading protocols modeling a recursive process to search the trading partner and make transactions with several behavioral assumptions considering the situations of early markets. The simulations results show that adding transaction costs resulted in reduction of trading volumes. Furthermore, the speed of reduction in trading volume to the increase of transaction costs is higher when there is scale economy. With a certain level of scale economy, the trading volumes abruptly fall down to almost zero as the transaction cost gets over a certain level. This suggests the possibility of a failed market. Since the scale economy is thought to be significant in the early stage of emission trading market, it is desirable to design a trading system that maximizes trading volumes and minimizes unit transaction costs at the outset. One of the alternatives to meet these conditions is to establish a centralized exchange and take measures to increase trading volumes.

  • Using a saturated-unsaturated transient flow equation the change of hydraulic heads within a dike due to tidal fluctuation is investigated in this study. The calculation is done by the use of a software computer program called FLUMP, which is based on a FEM technique and useful to the analyses of unsaturated flow problems. Some of the program has been supplemented in this study for the application to the rise of a tide. It is assumed that a dike is composed of two materials, that the tide rises and falls with a constant amplitude of 10 meters, and that water tables are located at 0m, 5m, and lam from the minimum tidal level. For these conditions the hydraulic heads are calculated for 8 cycles(96 hours) of tidal changes. It is known from the analysis that the hydraulic heads change with tidal level in some extent and that the amplitudes of the head varies depending on the location within the dike: the maximum amplitude shows near the toe of the dike, the amplitude decreases with increasing distance from the upstream face, and beyond a certain location the heads are unaffected by the tidal differences. Assuming that the dike has been completed in a moment the hydraulic heads are nearly stabilized in 96 hours towards some constant values corresponding to a specified water table.

  • There has been many researches aimed at reinforcing the strength of resin, and these have led to the development and use of numerous materials in recent years. A case in point, is the recent development of plasma-treated polyethylene fiber which has been used mainly in fixed provisional restoration to reduce the incidence of fractures. This study aims at assessing whether plasma-treated polyethylene fiber as applied to composite resin is effective in increasing the flexural strength and how applied portions affect this. Twenty-four applied and eight unapplied composite resin bars were fabricated. Twenty-four applied specimens were divided into three groups. Plasma treated polyethylene fiber was applied to the groups each with different portions of composite resin. In the first group, plasma-treated polyethylene fiber was not applied. In the second group, fiber was applied to the compression side of composite resin. Fiber was applied to the tension side in the third group, while fiber was embedded in the tension side of the composite resin in the fourth group. Each specimen was tested by use of a three-point bending strength test with an instron testing machine, and the flexural strength was calculated. The following results were obtained. : 1. Under the conditions of this study, the third and fourth groups demonstrated a statistically greater flexural strength compared to the first and second groups. 2. But there was no statistically significant difference, not only between the first group and the second group, but also between the third group and the fourth group. Taken together, it can be concluded that plasma-treated polyethylene fiber applied to composite resin is an effective method in increasing flexural strength, and the best way of increasing the flexural strength is by application of plasma-treated polyethylene fiber to the tension side, or the embedding of same in composite resin. It must be mentioned however that this test used a static single-load test method. This method determined the maximum stresses that could be tolerated, but this might not be valid where the prediction of clinical failure is concerned. In order therefore to clinically utilize plasma-treated polyethylene fiber to reinforce the composite resin, it is suggested that a further study which considers the various loads be undertaken.

  • Microcapsules consisting of natural, biodegradable polymers for controlled and/or sustained core release applications are needed. Physicochemical properties of whey proteins suggest that they may be suitable wall materials in developing such microcapsules. The objectives of the research were to develop water-insoluble, whey protein-based microcapsules containing a model water-soluble drug using a chemical cross-linking agent, glutaraldehyde, and to investigate core release from these capsules at simulated physiological conditions. A model water soluble drug, theophylline, was suspended in whey protein isolate (WPI) solution. The suspension was dispersed in a mixture of dichloromethane and hexane containing 1% biomedical polyurethane. Protein matrices were cross-linked with 7.5-30 ml of glutaraldehyde-saturated toluene (GAST) for 1-3 hr. Microcapsules were harvested, washed, dried and analyzed for core retention, microstructure, and core release in enzyme-free simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) at 37$^{\circ}C$, A method consisting of double emulsification and heat gelation was also developed to prepare water-insoluble, whey protein-based microcapsules containing anhydrous milkfat (AMF) as a model apolar core. AMF was emulsified into WPI solution (15-30%, pH 4.5-7.2) at a proportion of 25-50% (w/w, on dry basis). The oil-in-water emulsion was then added and dispersed into corn oil (50 $^{\circ}C$)to form an O/W/O double emulsion and then heated at 85$^{\circ}C$ for 20 min for gelation of whey protein wall matrix. Effects of emulsion composition and pH on core retention, microstructure, and water-solubility of microcapsules were determined. Overall results suggest that whey proteins can be used in developing microcapsules for controlled and sustained core release applications.

  • Absorption and translocation of bensulfuron-methyl {methyl 2[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl) amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]methyl]benzoate} in rice (Oryza sativa L.) as affected by mineral nutrients and mixed herbicides were determined using the $^{14}C-labeled$ herbicide in culture solution. Absorption of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ by the root decreased with increasing concentration of bensulfuron-methyl. However, increase in the application concentration did not affect movement of the $^{14}C$ to the shoot. There was no difference in total amount of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ taken up between absorption periods of 12 and 48 hours, whereas $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ translocated to the shoot increased with increasing the absorption period. When bensulfuron-methyl mixtures were applied, butachlor [N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2',6'-diethylphenyl)acetamide] did not affect absorption and translocation of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$. However, quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-quinoline carboxylic acid) mixed at a high concentration resulted in decrease in absorption and translocation of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$. Nutritional disorder such as deficient or excess supply of mineral nutrients caused to inhibit absorption of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$. The greatest decrease and delay of $^{14}C-bensulfuron-methyl$ absorption and/or translocation occurred in N-deficient and S-excess supply conditions.

  • Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is widely used to increase the nutritional and functional properties of food. In this study, the physiochemical and functionality of WPC-30 hydrolysates were examined to evaluate the possibility of application in the food industry. The WPC-30 was manufactured using ultrafiltration and spray-drying, and then hydrolyzed with proteolytic enzyme including alcalase, flavourzyme, nuetrase and protamex. Enzymatic hydrolysis had a significant influence on the physicochemical properties as evident from the increased foaming capacity, solubility. Alcalase caused highest protein hydrolysis (3.26%) and the bitterness. Foaming capacity was largest in WPC-30 hydrolysate treated with flavourzyme. Protein solubility at various levels of pH was highest in protamex-treated WPC-30 hydrolysate. However, the solubility of WPC-30 hydrolysates was significantly improved in alkaline condition than in acidic and neutral conditions. The study revealed that spray dried enzyme modified WPC can be used in various functional food.
