  • Specimens of five species of Apodemus(A. agrarius, A. chevrieri, A. draco, A. latronum, and A. peninsulae) from east Asia (Korea and China) were used for numerical taxonomic analyses with 31 external and cranial characters. Two groups and eight subgroups within them were recognized: [I; a large-size form; (A. agrarius chejuensis), (A. chevrieri), (A. draco orestes and A. latronum), and(A. peninsulae peninsulae and A. p. preator)], [II; a small-size form; (A. agrarius coreae), (A. agrarius manchuricus, A. a. ningpoensis, and A. a. pallidior), (A. draco draco), and (A. peninsulae sowerbyi)]. Conclusions based on morphometric analyses are such as followings: 1) Morphometric characters appeared not to be useful in order to distinguish two subgenera in Apodemus (Apodemus and Alsomys), 2) further analysis is necessary to determine whether or not A. draco and A. latronum are conspecific, and 3) A. a. chejuensis is in morphometric characters the largest form among five species of Apodemus studied. Moreover, it is confirmed: 1) A. agrarius, A. chevrieri, and A. peninsulae are distinct species, 2) A. draco and A. latronum are not conspecific with A. peninsulae. 3) Three forms of A. agrarius (large-size form, medium-size form, and small-size form) can be recognized as three subspecies [(A. a. chejuensis), (A. agrarius coreae), and (A, a, ningpoensis including A. a. manchuricus and A. a. pallidior)], 4)A. draco draco and A. draco orestes are distinct subspecies, 5) A. peninsulae peninsulae (including A. p. preator) and A. p. sowerbyi are distinct subspecies.

  • Four external and 27 cranial characters of Korean field mice (Apodemus peninsulae) from nine regions in China and Korea, representing three subspecies, were analyzed by multivariate methods. Four size-forms were recognized a largest-size form Mt. Weolak and Yeoncheon in Korea (= subspecies peninsulae) and Kirin and Heilung in China (= subspecies praetor), a large-size form from Inner Mongolia in China (= subspecies praetor) and Sanxi and Sandong in China (= subspecies sowerbyi), a middle-size form from Beijing in China (= subspecies sowerbyi), and a small-size form from Xinjiang in China (= subspecies sowerbyi). Although Corbet (1978) recognized only two subspecies in A. peninsulae, subspecies peninsulae and sowerbyi, within its distributional range in the continent of Asia, it was revealed in this study with morphometric characters that A. peninsulae could not be classified simply into two subspecies, because subspecies praetor and subspecies sowerbyi formed the large-size form and because subspecies sowerbyi was so diverse in its morphology as to be composed of three size-forms. Further analyses with the samples from other regions of China and Russia seem to be necessary to clarify the taxonomy of A. peninsulae.

  • Sampels of Korean field mice (apodemus peninsulae peninsulae Thomas ) from six localities in Korea were used for the analyses of mitochondrial DNa (Mt DNA) fragment patterns resulted from the digestion with eight restriction enzymes. A total of 29 fragments were recognized and seven mtDNA clones were revealed. The nucleotide-sequence divergences (p) among the seven mtDNA clones ranged from 0.42% to 2.01%. Moreover, the seven clones were grouped into three major subgroups with the mean divergence value of 1.52% among them. One subgroup was composed of three clones of 18 sample from three localities (16, Cheongu: 1, Mt. Sobaek : 1, Mt. weolak) L another subgroup, three clones of eight samples from four localities (2, Cheongju ; 2 , Mt. Weolak ; 2, Mt. Gaya ; 2, haenam) ; and the last subgroup, one clone of two samples from Cheongju. Three subgroups were also distinct with one another in their mtDNA genotypes of Stu I and the former two subgroups differed from the last subgroup in their genotypes with Pvu II. Further analyses with additional samples from various localities in Korea appeared to be necessary in order to clarify the taxonomic status of the distinct mtDNA subgroups.

  • Four external and 27 cranial characters of Korean field mice (Apodemus peninsuluek from nine localities in eastern Asia, representing ave subspecies, were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods. Three forms were recognized: a large-size form from Korea (subspecies peninsulael, southern Manchuria (praeto4, and northern Manchuria (majofi a middle-size form from urestern Siberia (tschergal and southuvestern China (sowerbyi); a small-size form from northeastern China (sowerbyi). It is also revealed that variations among the three forms are clinal rind circular. It is confirmed that Apodemus peninsuloe could be classified into two subspecies (peninsulae and sowerbyl) within the distribution range in the continent of Asia, as noted tv Corbel (1978). However, it is found that subspecies peninsulae includes praetor and moior and that subspecies sowerbyi includes tscherga, indicating that subspecies tscherga is not the synonym of subspecies peninsulae, but that of subspecies sowerbyi.

  • To provide basic information for wildlife management, we investigated the distribution and ecology of wild mice in Mt. Keumwon recreational forests. The trapped wild mice were a total of 4 species such as Eothenomys regulus, Apodemus speciosus peninsulae, Apodemus agarius, and Crocidura suaveolens. A total of 79 individuals from four species were trapped. Number of Eothenomys regulus was the highest as 41 individuals followed by Apodemus speciosus peninsulae of 31 individuals, Apodemus agarius of 4 individuals, and Crocidura suaveolens of 4 individuals. Depending on forest type, 51 individuals were captured in broad-leaved forests, whereas 28 individuals were captured in coniferous forests. Average weight of the trapped Eothenomys regulus, Apodemus speciosus peninsulae, Apodemus agarius, and Crocidura suaveolens was 37.13 g, 36.29 g, 31.25 g, and 15 g, respectively. Among the trapped wild mice, vole which has the largest head and ears were Eothenomys regulus and vole which has the longest tail was Apodemus speciosus peninsulae and Apodemus agarius (p<0.5). This study might be valuable to control and predict some damages related to wild mice in Mt. Keumwon for protecting forest trees.

  • The Korean field mouse, Apodemus peninsulae mitochondrial genome has previously been reported for mice obtained from mainland Korea and China. In this investigation the complete mitochondrial genome sequence for a mouse obtained from Baengnyeong Island (BI) in South Korea was determined using high-throughput whole-genome sequencing for the first time. The circular genome was determined to be 16,268 bp in length. It was found to be composed of a typical complement gene that encodes 13 protein subunits of enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and one control region. Phylogenetic analysis involved 13 amino acid sequences and demonstrated that the A. peninsulae genome from BI was more closely grouped with two Korean samples (HQ660074 and JN546584) than the Chinese (KP671850) sample. This study verified the evolutionary status of A. peninsulae inhabiting the BI at the molecular level, and could be a significant supplement to the genetic background.

  • Hantaviruses are distributed in rodent population world-widely even in geographical areas where hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) has not been reported. Various species of Family Muridae and Arvicolidae serve as the natural reservoirs of hantaviruses. Hantaan virus, Seoul virus, Puumala virus, Prospect HII virus, Sin Nombre virus and New York virus are members of genus Hantavirus and isolated from lungs of A. agrarius, R. norvegicus, C. glareolus, M. pennsylvanicus, P. maniculatus and P. leucopus respectively. This experiment was intended to find the distribution of hantavirus infection among wild rodents and isolate the hantavirus from lung tissue of seropositve Apodemus peninsulae, and compared the nucleotide and amino acid sequences with prototype of hantaan virus 76-118 strain. Hantaviral sequences were amplified from lung tissues of A. peninsulae by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Alignment and comparison of the 324 nucleotide of G2 region of M-genomic segment diverged 4.6% and 0% at the nucleotide and amino acid levels, and complete N protein-coding region of S-genomic segment diverged 3.7% and 1.4% nucleotide and amino acid levels, respectively. This is the report to spill-over on the hantaan virus from A. agrarius to A. peninsulae in Korea.
