In order to evaluate the correlation of age with development stage on permanent lower posterior teeth. the author exmined the roentgeregrams in standard films taken by intraoral technic and analysed the development phases of 1358 teeth of 500 males ranging from 9 to 15 years. The development was divided into 7 phases : Crown complete (Cr. C.). Root length 1/4(R. 1/4) Root length /2 (R. 1/2) Apical closure complete (A.C) The obtained results were as follows : 1. The formation of roots in full length on posterior teeth was complete as follow : a. Roots of 1st premolar : 12.72 years b. Roots of 2nd premolar : 12.94 years c. Meral Roots of 2nd molar : 13.38 years d. Distal Roots of 2nd molar : 13.46 years 2. The formation of apical forman of premolar was closured as follows : a. Apical foramen of root of 1st premolar : 13.64 years b. Apical foramen of root of 2nd premolar : 13.93 years 3. As a general rule. the mesial roots of second molar were developed earlier than distal roots of second molar. 4. In the correlation of age with the development stage, the regression equations. the correlation coefficents. and the sample numbers were “Y = 0.8370x + 10.2160, r = 0.71(p<0.01), n = 318”on lower first premolar, “Y = 0.6984x + 10.2148, r = 0.71(p<0.01), n = 385”on lower second premolar, “Y = 0.8810x + 10.2040, r = 0.65(p<0.01), n = 344”on mesial Root of lower second molar, and “Y = 0.7310x + 10.7940, r = 0.66(p<0.01), n = 311”on Distal Root of lower second molar respectively.
Eighty-two maxillary canine were injected with china ink, decalcified, cleared and used in a study, in vitro, to determine the number of root canals, the frequency and location of lateral canals, the location of apical foramens, and the curvature of root canals. The results were as follows; 1.All of the maxillary canines showed the single canals. 2. Of the 82 canals studied, 20.7% of the canals were found to have lateral canals and most ramification of them were located in the apical third of the root. 3. In the case of the curvature, the mesial curvature of the canals (40.3%) usually showed more than the distal curvature of them (13.4%) 4. 41.2% of the apical foramen were located directly on the root apex and 58.5% of them laterally.
The purpose of this study was to compare apical sealing ability of continuous wave canal filling technique according to various heat source plugging depths. Eighty one extracted human premolars with straight root were cleaned and shaped to size 35 using .06 taper rotary NiTi file. After cleansing and shaping, the teeth were divided into 5 groups following the heat source probing depths from the apex; 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm. All specimens were filled using E&Q plus with #35/.06 tapered gutta-percha cone. The positive control teeth were not filled. All teeth were coated with nail varnish except the apical 1 mm around the apical foramen. Negative control teeth were completely sealed include the apical foramen. All specimens were immersed in 1% methylene blue solution for 72 hours. Then the specimens were sectioned horizontally at 1, 2 and 3 mm from the root apex. Each sectioned surface was photographed using a digital camera attached to the stereomicroscope at $12.5{\times}2.5$ fold magnification. All points at 1, 2 and 3 mm were summed as final score of one specimen. Statistical analysis of the collected data was performed. Under the condition of this study. there was no significant difference between the heat source plugging depths of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm in apical sealing ability. All of apical heat source plugging depth from 3 to 7 mm including Buchanan's protocol -from 5 to 7 mm- seems to be acceptable in clinical application.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the ratio and rate of apical closure when inducing root growth of necrotic immature permanent teeth using alternative triple antibiotics. 24 permanent teeth in the treatment group and 27 premolars in the control group were retrospectively studied using periapical radiographs for more than 300 days after the first visit. The difference in the growth rate between the two groups was statistically compared using the Mann-Whitney test at a significance level of 0.05. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the first month and during months 1 - 3, 3 - 6, and 6 - 12. After 12 months, the cumulative rate of decrease in the apical foramen width in the treatment group was 50.59% and that in the control group was 71.82%, which revealed a significant difference between the two groups. There were significant differences in the rates of decrease in the apical foramen width after 3, 6 months, and later period in the treatment group, respectively. The cumulative rate of increase in the root dentin area presented no statistically significant differences between the treatment group and control group during the entire period of examination.
The purpose of this study was to compare the histomorphological change of curved root canal preparation using GT rotary File, Profile .04 taper and stainless steel K-file. 45 mesial canals(over 20 degree) of extracted human mandibular first molars were mounted in resin using a modified Bramante muffle system and divided into three groups. The roots were cross-sectioned at 2.5mm 5mm and 8mm levels from apical foramen. Tracings of the canals were made from preinstrumentation pictures of the cross section. The canals were prepared using a step-back technique with stainless steel K file(group 1), Profile .04 taper rotary file(group 2) and GT rotary file(group 3). Tracings of the prepared canals were made from postinstrumentation picture. Canal centring ratio. amount of transportation, area of dentin removed and shape of canal were measured and statistically were evaluated with Student-Newman-Keuls test using Sigma Stat(Jandel Scientific Software, USA). The results were as followings : 1 Amount of transportation of group 2 was the lowest at apical part, but there was no statistical difference. The direction of transportation was the outside of curvature at apical part. 2. Centering ratio at the apical part of group 1 was the highest, and there was statistical differences between apical and middle part, apical and coronal part(p<0.05). Centering ratio at the middle part of group 3 was the lowest, and there was statistical difference between apical and middle part(p<0.05). Centering ratio of group 2 was the lowest at apical part, but there was no statistical difference. 3. Amount of dentin removed of group 1 was the highest at coronal, middle and apical part among three groups, and there was statistical difference(p<0.05). 4. The majority of the cross-sectioned canal shape after instrumentation were irregular at coronal, middle and apical part. But there are more number of round shaped canals at group 3 than other group.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the apical constriction (AC) and apical canal morphology of maxillary first and second molars, using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Materials and Methods: The anatomical features of 313 root canals from 41 maxillary first molars and 57 maxillary second molars of patients with known age and sex were evaluated using micro-CT, with a resolution of 26.7 ㎛. The factors evaluated were the presence or absence of AC, the morphotypes, bucco-lingual dimension, mesio-distal dimension, and the profile (shape) of AC and the apical root canal. The apical root canal dimensions, location of the apical foramen (AF), AC to AF distance, and presence of accessory canals in the apical 5 mm were also assessed. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used for data evaluation. Results: AC was present in all 313 root canals. Patients' age and sex did not significantly impact either AC or the apical canal dimensions. The most common AC morphotype detected was the traditional (single) constriction (52%), followed by the parallel (29%) morphotype. The mean AC dimensions in maxillary first molars were not significantly different from those in maxillary second molars. Sixty percent of AF were located within 0.5 mm from the anatomic apex. Conclusions: The most common morphotype of AC detected was the traditional constriction. Neither patients' age nor sex had a significant impact on the dimensions of the AC or the apical root canal. The majority of AF (60%) were located within 0.5 mm from the anatomic apex.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of five obturation methods in conjunction with sealer. Fifty extracted upper and lower anterior teeth were selected and the access cavities were prepared lingually with a round bur. The working length was determined with a #15K file, and the root canals were instrumented with a #40K file 1mm short of the apical foramen. The apical third of root canal was flared by step-back technique and the coronal two thirds of root canal using #2 - 3 Gates Glidden drills. And then, the teeth were randomly assigned to five groups of 10 teeth each. A thin coat of Tubliseal was placed into the canal into the canal using the # 35 reamer and the canals were filled by lateral condensation, vertical condensation, ultrasonic activated lateral condensation, ULTRAFIL injecting, and McSpadden compaction methods. All teeth were stored in 100 % relative humidity at 31c for 48 hours. The roots were suspended in 2 % methylene blue solution for 48 hours, left to dry for 24 hours and then, half side of root was removed longitudinally using the fissure bur. A Boley gauge wes used to measure the distance, to the nearest 0.1mm, from the apical foramen to the most coronal level of dye penetration. The measurement of dye penetration was statistically compared by Duncan's multiple range test The results were as follows 1. Ultrasonic group showed the best sealing ability among the all experimental groups, but there were statistically no significant difference in the sealing ability between ultrasonic group and vertical condensation group. 2. There were no statistically significant difference in the sealing ability among the lateral, vertical, and ultrasonic groups. 3. McSpadden group showed the worst sealing ability among the all exprimental groups.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of several materials on the healing process of apical wound. Sixteen mandibular premolars obtained from 4 healthy dogs were used for this study. Under general anesthesia, the pulpal chamber of each tooth was opened and the pulps were extirpated. The root canals were then instrumented with H-file and irrigated with physiologic saline solution ; the apices were purposely perforated and enlarged with the engine K-reamer. In the experimental groups, apical wounds were filled with one of calcium hydroxide, hydroxylapatite, and tricalcium phosphate materials, mixture of each materials and physiologic saline solution, with a lentulo spiral. In the control group, apical wounds were not filled with any material. All the root canals were filled by the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha cone and ZOE sealer. The access opening of all the teeth were closed with amalgam. On the 10, 20, 40 and 60th day after experiment, experimental animals were sacrificed. Segments of jaws, each containing one tooth, were fixed in 10% formalin solution and decalcified in Plank-Rychlo solution. The specimens were embedded in paraffin and serially sectioned to an average thickness of $6{\mu}m$. The sections were stained by hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome stain method and examined under light microscope. The results were as follows : 1. In the experimental groups, the new bone formations were observed in apical wounds. 2. Fourty days later, apical wounds were healed by granulation tissue in the experimental groups, but were not healed by granulation tissue in the control group, and the healing process of experimental groups were more rapid than that of control group. 3. Sixty days later, chronic inflammation disappeared in the experimental groups, and the materials used showed biologic affinity to the periapical tissue. 4. In all the groups, the resorption of cementum appeared on the 10th and 20th day after experiment, and the deposition of cementum appeared on the 40th and 60th day after experiment, especially showing narrowness of apical foramen due to newly formed cementum in calcium hydroxide group. 5. Calcum hydroxide and tricalcium phosphate particles were gradually resolved, but hydroxylapatite particles were not resolved through the experimental period.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the apical transportation and working length change in curved root canals created in resin blocks, using 3 geometrically different types of Ni-Ti files, K3, NRT, and Profile. Materials and Methods: The curvature of 30 resin blocks was measured by Schneider technique and each groups of Ni-Ti files were allocated with 10 resin blocks at random. The canals were shaped with Ni-Ti files by Crown-down technique. It was analyzed by Double radiograph superimposition method (Backman CA 1992), and for the accuracy and consistency, specially designed jig, digital X-ray, and CAD/CAM software for measurement of apical transportation were used. The amount of apical transportation was measured at 0, 1, 3, 5 mm from 'apical foramen - 0.5 mm' area, and the alteration of the working length before and after canal shaping was also measured. For statistics, Kruskal-Wallis One Way Analysis was used. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups in the amount of working length change and apical transportation at 0, 1, and 3 mm area (p = 0.027), however, the amount of apical transportation at 5 mm area showed significant difference between K3 and Profile system (p = 0.924). Conclusions: As a result of this study, the 3 geometrically different Ni-Ti files showed no significant difference in apical transportation and working length change and maintained the original root canal shape.
Laser doppler flowmeter (LDF) has been applied to the measurement of pulpal blood flow (PBF) in human teeth. As far as we searched, the detection area of the pulp in the blood flow measurement has not been clarified, yet. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to obtain information of the detection area in PBF measurement using LDF. The experiments were performed on the artificial blood circulation in extracted human upper central incisors. The apical portions of examined teeth (n=6) were severed and root canals were enlarged from the apical end to the 2mm incisal to the level of enamel-cement junction. An individual resin cap of each tooth was prepared and a hole was drilled 2mm incisal to enamel-cement junction of the labial side of the cap. The measurement probe of LDF (MBF3D, Moor Instrument, UK) was plugged into the hole of the cap. Heparinized human peripheral blood, which was in advance collected and diluted 3 times with physiological saline, was pumped through the apical foramen of the teeth via a silicone tube and a disposable needle (o.d. 0.7mm) and blood flow signals were monitored. The flux signal significantly increased with the enlargement of the root canal to incisal direction (p<0.01, Friedman analysis). The result indicates that the performance of LDF in PBF with human teeth is limited.
