We investigated the effect of the water quality on the phytoplankton community in the 2 sites of Andong reservoir. The water temperature in 1 m and 4 m depth (LH) was changed, but the temperature in 7 m depth (HD) was constant irrespective of the season. The dissolved oxygen in LH was lower than that of the HD. The turbidity of water and pH were similar in both depths. The concentration of chlorophyll-a decreased with increased depth of water. Fifty nine phytoplankton taxa were identified and the most abundant phytoplankton group was Chlorophyceae with 25 taxa (43%). Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae consisted of 17 taxa (29%) and 10 taxa (17%), respectively. Cryptophyceae had 3 taxa (5%) and Synurophyceae and Dinophyceae had 2 taxa (3%) in Andong reservoir. Dominant species were Elakatothrix gelatinosa (Aug, 23) and Eutetramorus fottii (Aug. 23 and Sep. 28) from Chlorophyceae, Aphanizomenon cf. flos-aquae (Aug. 16), Microcystis aeruginosa (all sampling periods), and Aphanocapsa delicatissima (Oct. 27) from Cyanophyceae, and Cyclotella stelligera (Oct. 13), Cyclotella sp. (Oct. 13 and Oct. 27) and Synedra acus (Aug. 16) from Bacillariophyceae.
Harmful Algal Bloom Alert System (HABAS) for drinking water supply is require to fast and accurate count as system monitoring of cyanobacterium occurrence and inducing a response action. We measured correlation between colony size and cell number including genus Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Microcystis, Oscillatoria which are targeted at HABAS, deducted from standard formula, and suggested calculation method from colony size to the number of cell. We collected cyanobacteria samples at Han River (Paldang reservoir), Nakdong River (Dalseong weir, Changnyeonghaman weir) and Geum River (Gobok reservoir) from August to October, 2013. Also, we studied correlation between colony size and cell number, and calculated regression equation. As a result of correlation of harmful cyanobacteria by genus, Anabaena spp. and Aphanizomenon spp. having trichome showed high correlation coefficients more than 0.93 and Microcystis spp. having colony showed correlation coefficient of 0.76. As a result of correlation of harmful cyanobacteria by species, Anabaena crassa, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, A. issatschenkoi, Oscillatoria curviceps, O. mougeotii having trichome showed high correlation coefficients from 0.89 to 0.96, and Microcystis aeruginosa, M. wessenbergii, M. viridis having colony showed correlation coefficients from 0.76 to 0.88. Compared with other genus Microcystis relatively showed low correlation because even species and colony size are the same, cell density and cell size are different from Microcystis strains. In this study, using calculated regression might be fast and simple method of cell counting. From now on, we need to secure additional samples, and make a decision to study about other species.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and correlations of the Yeongcheon Lake in order to reduce the occurrence of harmful cyanobacteria. In this study, we investigated the water quality and phytoplankton of the lake from May to November in 2017. Correlation and data mining analyses were performed to analyze the relationship between the two factors. The water temperature was lowest at the point where the Yeongcheon Lake inflow occurs at Imha Lake. It was highest at the point where the outflow occurs to Angye Lake. The pH was also highest at the outflow point, but in the case of DO, it was highest at the midpoint between the inflow and outflow. The main cyanobacteria that emerged during the study period were Oscillatorialimosa, Microcysti saeruginosa and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. As a result of correlation analysis, the water temperature, inflow, COD loading, TOC loading at the inflow point of the Yeongcheon Lake were the items that were related to the harmful cyanobacteria. The data mining analysis indicated that the TP loading and harmful cyanobacteria in the inflow point of the Yeongcheon Lake were influential on the detrimental cyanobacteria in the Yeongcheon Lake outflow point. When the TP loading was less than 39.0 kg/day at the inflow site, it was expected that the amount of harmful cyanobacteria could be maintained below 10,000 cells/mL.
The distribution and standing crop of phytoplankton were investigated seasonally at 6 stations in the nearby streams of Suwon sewage disposal plant. It turned out to be total of 176 taxa, and classified as 4 phylums, 4 classes, 11 orders, 6 suborders, 22 families, 54 genera, 155 species, 20 varieties and 1 form by Engler's classification system. Among 176 taxa, 22 including Microcystis Aphanizomenon flos-aquae were identified as indicators of water pollution. Standing crops of all stations investigated appeared to be relatively high as in other streams through the center of the city, such as Kyoungan-chon of Youngin-si and Gulpo-chon of Buchon-si. In station 1,2,4 and 6, the highest number of standing crop were shown in summer, while in station 3 and 5, it was high in winter. Based on the present study upon the distribution and standing crop of phytoplankton, it is regarded as the state of the eutrophication in the nearby streams of Suwon sewage disposal plant.

BACKGROUND: Contamination of source water by odorous compounds are one of the problems related to the water quality management, especially in Korea where surface water is used as drinking water. Geosmin (1, 10-trans-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol) and 2-MIB (2-methyl isoborneol : 1,2,7,7-tetramethyl-exo-bicycloheptan-2-ol) are commonly recognized earthy-musty odor compounds produced by algae causing serious problems to the drinking water purification facilities. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, spatial and temporal distribution of the odor compounds, geosmin and 2-MIB were investigated along with the development of phytoplankton in the Daechung reservoir from July 2012 to October 2013. CONCLUSION: Concentrations and frequencys of detection of both compounds increased from April to October which were related to cyanobacterial bloom periods. However, concentrations of odor compounds were not related to the number of cyanobacteria. Concentrations of both cyanobacteria and geosmin showed similar trends with depth. Pearson correlation analyses showed that geosmin concentration exhibited significant correlation with the count of Anabaena macrospora and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. On the other hand, 2-MIB concentration showed a significant correlation with the count of Anabaena smithii.

The construction of eight large weirs in the Nakdong River, Korea, caused a decrease in the water flow velocity and several physical changes to the water environment. Here, changes in phyto- and zooplankton communities and water quality in the areas near the eight weirs were investigated from 2011 to 2013, and relationships between phytoplankton abundances and environmental factors were analyzed. Special emphasis was given to the succession patterns in algal abundance based on temperature fluctuations. At the eight weirs, 24 dominant species were found. The most abundant phytoplankton species was Stephanodiscus sp. (39.4% of dominant frequency). Cyanobacteria of the genus Microcystis dominated during the summer, with an dominant frequency of 8.5% and cell abundance ratio of 36.6%. Significant correlations were observed between temperature and abundance of eight of the main dominant species; seven species showed positive correlations with temperature. Stephanodiscus sp., however, showed a negative correlation with temperature (r=-0.26, p<0.01). In addition, this species showed a significant negative correlation with the dominant algal species-Aulacoseira granulata and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, with the zooplankton Copepoda and with Cladocera. On the contrary, seven other dominant species of algae showed significant positive correlations with zooplankton. Thus, we showed that the seasonal succession of plankton communities in the Nakdong River was related to the water temperature changes.
Myrionecta rubra, a mixotrophic ciliate, is a cosmopolitan red tide species which is commonly found in neritic and estuarine waters. M. rubra had long been listed as an “nculturable protist”until 2 different laboratory strains were finally established in 2 research groups at the beginning of this century, enabling us to perform initiative investigation into various aspect of the live M. rubra strains (Gustafson et al. 2000; Yih et al. 2004b; Johnson and Stoecker 2005). Field sampling was carried out on high tide at 2 fixed stations around Kunsan Inner Harbor (St.1 near the Estuarine Weir and St.2 off Kunsan Ferry Station) every other day for 4 months from mid-February 2004 to understand detailed figure of the recurrent spring blooms of M. rubra following the onset of the water gates operation of the Keum River Estuarine Weir on August 1994. With its maximum abundance of 272 cells mL$^{-1}$ in St.1, fluctuation pattern of the M. rubra population at the 2 stations was strikingly similar. Notable growth of M. rubra population started on late April, to cause M. rubra red tides during one month from mid-May in which “xceptionally low salinity days”without its red tide were intermittently inserted. High abundance of M. rubra over 50 cells mL$^{-1}$ was recorded at samples with their water temperature and salinity higher than 15${^{\circ}C}$ and 4.0 psu, respectively. During pre-bloom period when salinity fluctuation is moderate and the water temperature is cooler than 15°C, Skeletonema costatum, a chain-forming centric diatom, was most dominant. Cyanobacterial species such as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Phormidium sp. replaced other dominant phytoplankters on the days with “xceptionally low salinity”even during the main blooming period of M. rubra. To summarize, M. rubra could form spring blooms in Keum River Estuary when the level of salinity fluctuation was more severe than that for the dominant diatom Skeletonema costatum and milder than that for the predominance by freshwater cyanobacteria. Therefore, optimal control of the scale and frequency of freshwater discharges might lead us to partially modify the fluctuation pattern of M. rubra populations as well as the period of spring blooms by M. rubra in Keum River Estuary. Sampling time interval of 2 days for the present study or daily sampling was concluded to be minimally required for the detailed exploration into the spring blooms by M. rubra populations in estuaries with weirs like Keum River Estuary.
The occurrence of cyanobacterial bloom in Korean lakes of the summer is generalized. The characteristic of cyanobacterial community was explored. And the developmental stage of cyanobacterial bloom was divided into three phases, 'preparatory phase', 'bloom phase' and 'extinction phase' Cyanobacterial bloom started during the end of June at site 1, transition Bone of Lake Daecheong. The period of water bloom in normal year was about 60~70 days at site 4, lacustrine Bone, but it was unusually 11 days from July 19 in 1999. M. aerugilnosa first occurred in June, had a peak of standing crop curve from the end of August to the beginning of September in 1998 and 2002 and the end of July in 1999 and 2001. The standing crop of M. aeruginosa occupied $68.1\%$ of phytoplankton, $74.2\%$ of cyanobacteria and $88.8\%$ of genus Microcystis, Anabaena spp. first occurred in April, was above 10,000 cells $mL^{-1}$ from the end of August to about the middle of September in 1998. The effect of rainfalls on cyanobacterial bloom was different according to the phases. The rainfalls of preparatory phase assist the growth of cyanobacteria, but accelerate the decrease of cyanobacteria in extinction phase. In bloom phase, the heavy rainfalls reduce the development of the bloom, while the slight ones display only a little effects.
With physico-chemical environmental factors such as temperature, DO, pH, conductivity and nutrients, size fractionated of phytoplankton standing crops and chlorophyll a concentrations $(>8\mu{m},\;3-8\mu{m},\;<3\mu{m})$ and their relationships were investigated at each station of Kyungan Stream and Togyo Reservoir from April to November in 1997. The two sampling sites showed different nutrient status: Kyungan Stream was eutrophic, while Togyo Reservoir was mesotrophic. Large sizes of phytoplankton and chl. a were higher in Kyungan Stream, opposite to those of Togyo Reservoir; Standing crops of phytoplankton $(>8\mu{m)$ and chl. a $(3-8\mu{m)}$ were high in Kyung-an Stream, while phytoplankton $(3-8\mu{m)}$and chi. a $(<3\mu{m)$ were abundant in Togyo Reservoir. These results imply that phytoplankton community in the highly eutrophicated water mainly comprised the large filamentous and/or colonial algae, such as Microcystis spp. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, which easily enriched by nutrients loading.

Irregular discharges of freshwater through the water gates of the Keum River Estuarine Weir, Korea, whose construction had been completed in 1998 with its water gates being operated as late as August 1994, drastically modified the estuarine environment. Sharp decrease of salinity along with the altered concentrations of inorganic nutrients are accompanied with the irregular discharges of freshwater into the estuary under the influence of regular semi-diurnal tidal effect. Field sampling was carried out on the time of high tide at 2 fixed stations(St.1 near the Estuarine Weir and St.2 off Kunsan Ferry Station) every other day for 4 months from mid-February 2004 to investigate into the semi-weekly variation of spring phytoplankton community in relation to the freshwater discharges from Keum River Estuarine Weir. CV(coefficient of variation) of salinity measurements was roughly 2 times greater in St.1 than that in St.2, reflecting extreme salinity variation in St.1 Among inorganic nutrients, concentrations of N-nutrients($NO_3^-,\;NO_2^-$ and $NH_4^+$) were clearly higher in St.1, to imply the more drastic changes of the nutrient concentrations in St.1. than St.2 following the freshwater discharges. As a component of phytoplankton community, diatoms were among the top dominants in terms of species richness as well as biomass. Solitary centric diatom, Cyclotella meneghiniana, and chain-forming centric diatom, Skeletonema costatum, dominated over the phytoplankton community in order for S-6 weeks each (Succession Interval I and II), and the latter succeeded to the former from the time of <$10^{\circ}C$ of water temperature. Cyanobacterial species, Aphanizomenon Posaquae and Phormidium sp., which might be transported into the estuary along with the discharged freshwater, occupied high portion of total biomass during Succession Interval III(mid-April to late-May). During this period, freshwater species exclusively dominated over the phytoplankton community except the low concentrations of the co-occurring 2 estuarine diatoms, Cyclotella meneghiniana and Skeletonema costatum. During the 4th Succession Interval when the water temperature was over $18^{\circ}C$, the diatom, Guinardia delicatula, was predominant for a week with the highest dominance of $75\%$ in discrete samples. To summarize, during all the Succession Intervals other than Succession Interval III characterized by the extreme variation of salinity under cooler water temperature than $18^{\circ}C$, the diatoms were the most important dominants for species succession in spring. If the scale and frequency of the freshwater discharge could have been adjusted properly even during the Succession Interval III, the dominant species would quite possibly be replaced by other estuarine diatom species rather than the two freshwater cyanobacteria, Aphanizomenon flosaquae and Phormidium sp.. The scheme of field sampling every other day for the present study was concluded to be the minimal requirement in order to adequately explore the phytoplankton succession in such estuarine environment as in Keum River Estuary: which is stressed by the unpredictable and unavoidable discharges of freshwater under the regular semi-diurnal tide.
