2,5-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydrofurfuryl alcohol was electrosynthesized from furfuryl alcohol in methanol solution by using three kinds of metal oxide anode. The electrods were prepared by the following process : Thin layer of semiconducting material such as tin(IV)oxide and antimony(III)oxide was made on the titanium base metal in an electric furnace. The titanium metal block with the layer was coated with ${\alpha}-PbO_2$, ${\beta}-PbO_2$, and $MnO_2$ in each electrolytes by anodic deposition, respectively. The lead dioxide electrodes showed better anti-corrosive property than the manganase dioxide electrode. The yield of the product was 92% which is almost the same as the one with conventional platinum electrodes.
[ $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ ]systems, bulk and deposited on different supports (five types of ${\gamma}$-aluminas, ${\alpha}$-alumina, silica-alumina, silica gel, magnesium oxide), have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of iso-butane. This statement is derived from the data obtained by a set of characterisation techniques(specific surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, in situ differential scanning calorimetry and in situ diffuse reflectance-absorption infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy).
Novel photochromic oxide glasses are presented in this section. These glasses are based on phosphate formers containing both tungsten and antimony atoms. Exposure to visible continuous or pulsed laser beam results in an intense photochromic effect witch is shown to occur in the volume of the glass and results in a broad absorption band in the visible and near infrared. This effect was not identified to be related with a structural change and is assumed to be entirely electronic. A change in the absorption coefficient is observed in function of tungsten content, exposure time and increases with beam power. These glasses have been investigated regarding the possibility of holographic data storage using visible lasers sources. Changes in both refractive index and the absorption coefficient were measured using a holographic setup. The modulation of the optical constants is reversible by heat treatment.

Antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) thin films were deposited at room temperature by reactive ion-beam sputter deposition (IBSD) technique in oxidizing atmosphere utilizing Sb and Sn metal targets. Effect of Sb doping concentration, film thickness and heat treatment on electrical and optical properties was investigated. The thickness of as-deposited films was controlled approximately to 1500 $\AA$ or 2000$\AA$, and Sb concentration to 10.8 and 14.9 wt%, as determined by SEM and XPS analyses. Heat treatment was performed at the temperature from 40$0^{\circ}C$ to 80$0^{\circ}C$ in flowing $O_2$or forming gas. The resulting ATO films showed widely changing electrical resistivity and optical transmittance values in the visible spectrum depending on the composition, thickness and firing condition.
Inorganic oxide colloids dispersed in alcohol were applied to a stainless steel substrate to produce oxide coatings for the purpose of minimizing emissive thermal transfer. The microstructure, roughness, infrared emissive energy, and surface heat loss of the coated substrate were observed with a variation of the nano oxide sol and coating method. It was found that the indium tin oxide, antimony tin oxide, magnesium oxide, silica, titania sol coatings may reduce surface heat loss of the stainless steel at 300${\circ}C$. It was possible to suppress thermal oxidation of the substrate with the oxide sol coatings during an accelerated thermal durability test at 600${\circ}C$. The silica sol coating was most effective to suppress thermal oxidation at 600${\circ}C$, so that it is useful to prevent the increase of radiative surface heat loss as a heating element. Therefore, the inorganic oxide sol coatings may be applied to improve energy efficiency of the substrate as the heating element.
Transparent conducting $SnO_2$-based thin films have been coated on float substrates such as fused quartz, and ceramic fiber cloths such as the Nexel and E-glass cloth from tin alkoxides by the sol-gel technique. Also, thin films of alternating layers of $SnO_2$ and $SiO_2$ have been fabricated by dip coating. The sheet resistance and average visible transmittance of the films were investigated in the aspect of the applications as transparent electrodes such as liquid crystal displays, photo-detectors and solar cells. The Nextel and E-glass cloths coated with antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) had sheet resistance of as low as $20 \;ohm/{\Box}$ and $120ohm/\;{\Box}$, respectively. The promotion effects of additives as $La_2O_3$ and Pt on the ethanol gas sensing properties of the films were investigated in the aspects of the applications as an alcohol sensor and a breath alcohol checker. Possible evidence of quantum well effects in the oxide multilayers of $SnO_2$ and $SiO_2$ was investigated.
Antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) thin films, one type of transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films, were prepared on a SiO2-coated glass substrate with different substrate temperatures by a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering system. Structural, optical, and electrical characteristics of the deposited ATO films were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, alpha-step, ultraviolet-visible spectrometer, and Hall effect measurement. The substrate temperature during deposition did not affect the basic crystal structure of the films but changed the grain size and film thickness. The optical transmittance of the ATO films deposited at different substrate temperatures was over 70%. The lowest sheet resistance and resistivity were 8.43 × 102 Ω/sq, and 0.3991 × 10-2 Ω·cm, respectively, and the highest carrier concentration and mobility were 2.36 × 1021 cm-3 and 6.627 × 10-2 cm2V-1s-1, respectively, at a substrate temperature of 400 ℃.
Fabricatio of the potassium-titanate fiber with K2O${\cdot}nTiO_2$ composition and coating of electrically conductive Sb-doped $SnO_2$ (ATO: Antimony Tin Oxide) layer on the fiber on the fiber were the fiber were the aims of this work. The fiber fabricated by slow-cooling technique showed the mean length of $15{\mu}m$ and mean diameter of $0.5{\mu}m$. Three different coating methods i.e, sol-gel, co-precipitation and urea technique, were attempted to coat the conductive ATO layer on the potassium-titanate fiber. The influences of coating method, concentrations of ATO(5∼70wt%) and Sb (0∼20wt%), temperature in the range of $450\;to\;800^{\circ}C$, number of washing (3∼4 times) on the resistivity of the ATO coated fiber were examined in details. The fiber coated ATO by coprecipitation exhibited lower resistivity of 103${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm at the 30 wt% of ATO, and showed nearly constant low value of $60{\Omega}{\cdot}cm\;to\;90{\Omega}{\cdot}$cm at the higher concentration of ATO.

Thermal decomposition of the uranyl phosphate mineral phase meta-ankoleite (KUO2PO4·3H2O) has been considered in relation to high temperature thermal sintering for the immobilisation of a uranyl phosphate containing waste. Meta-ankoleite thermal decomposition was studied across the temperature range 25 - 1200℃ under an inert N2 atmosphere at 1 atm. It is shown that the meta-ankoleite mineral phase undergoes a double de-hydration event at 56.90 and 125.85℃. Subsequently, synthetically produced pure meta-ankoleite remains stable until at least 1150℃ exhibiting no apparent phase changes. In contrast, when present in a mixed waste the meta-ankoleite phase is not identifiable after thermal treatment indicating incorporation within the bulk waste either as an amorphous phase and/or as uranium oxide. Visual inspection of the waste post thermal treatment showed evidence of self-sintering owing to the presence of glass former materials, namely, silica (SiO2) and antimony(V) oxide (Sb2O5). Therefore, incorporation of the uranium phase into the waste as part of waste sentencing and immobilisation via high temperature sintering for the purpose of long-term disposal is deemed feasible.

A self-powered electrochromic device was fabricated on an indium tin oxide-polyethylene naphthalate flexible substrate using a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) as a self-harvesting source; the electrochromic device was naturally bleached and operated under outdoor light conditions. The color of the organic electrochromic polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate, was shifted from pale blue to deep blue with an antimony tin oxide film as a charge-balanced material. Electrochromic performance was enhanced by secondary doping using dimethyl sulfoxide. As a result, the device showed stable switching behavior with a high transmittance change difference of 40% at its specific wavelength of 630 nm for 6 hrs. To improve the efficiency of the solar cell, 1.0 wt.% of Ag NWs in the photoanode was applied to the $TiO_2$ photoanode. It resulted in an efficiency of 3.3%, leading to an operating voltage of 0.7 V under xenon lamp conditions. As a result, we built a standalone self-harvesting electrochromic system with the performance of transmittance switching of 29% at 630 nm, by connecting with two solar cells in a device. Thus, a self-harvesting and flexible device was fabricated to operate automatically under the irradiated/dark conditions.
