The ethanol extract of leaf mustard(Brassica juncea) exhibiting high antimicrobial activities was fractionated in the order of hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and butanol fractions to test antimicrobial activity. The highest antimicrobial activity for the bacteria tested was found in the ethylacetate fraction, but a lesser extent in the butanol fraction. In contrast to antimicrobial activity for the bacteria, both ethylacetate and butanol fractions showed weak antimicrobial activity for yeasts. Unknown compound A in the ethylacetate fraction which exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity was isolated by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC, and exhibited 9 times more antimicrobial activity than the ethylacetate fraction.
This study was designed to compare the antimicrobial effect of the several root canal cements and to determine the duration of their activity. After Strep. sanguis 9811 was streaked on the surface of BHI agar and Plain agar, PVC tubes filled with root canal cements were applied and cultured for 48 hours, aerobically. Following results were obtained, 1. All of the examined root canal cements had antimicrobial activity with varying degree. 2. The antimicrobial activity of N2 was larger than any other root canal cements. Nogenol and Tubliseal showed the lowest activity. ZOE, AH26, Procosol and PCA cement showed the moderate antimicrobial activity. (P>0.05) 3. At one day after mixing the root canal cements, all of the root canal cements except N2 and PCA cement showed greatly reduced antimicrobial activity. 4. At three days after mixing, PCA cement showed the reduced antimicrobial activity. N2 showed the reduced activity at 7 days after mixing.
The ethanol extract from the root bark of Morus alba showed the strongest antimicrobial activity on the growth of almost all the tested microorganisms which were food-borne pathogens and food-related microorganisms. 1) In order to isolate and purify of antimicrobial substance extracted from the root bark of Morus alba, the antimicrobial substance from the ethanol extract which exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity was purified by solvent fractionation, silica gel column chromatography, TLC and HPLC. Among the fractions fractionated by 4 kind of solvents from the ethanol extract, the antimicrobial activity of ethyl acetate fraction had the strongest antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis. Unknown compound were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction by silica gel column chromatography, TLC and HPLC and the compounds showed strong absorbance at 207, 217 and 285 nm, therefore, it was supposed to be a kinds of aromatic compound.
This study was performed to screen the antimicrobial activities and proteolytic enzyme stability of the acidified extract of the Blue mussel Mytilus edulis. The acidified extract showed potent antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, and Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli D31, but had no activity against Candida albicans. Treatment of extract with trypsin completely abolished all or significant antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria, but slightly decreased antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis, and treatment of extract with chymotrypsin retained almost antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria except for E. coli D31. To confirm the additional enzyme stability of the extract, antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested after treated with several enzymes. Enzymes treated extract showed potent antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis and its activity was also retained for 5 h after trypsin treatments. Non-proteinaceous materials in the acidified extract also showed strong DNA-binding ability but did not show bacterial membrane permeabilizing ability. All our results indicate that mussel extract might contain the proteinaceous or non-proteinaceous antibacterial materials target not bacterial membrane but intracellular components. These results could be used to develop mussel extract as an additive for the improvement of stability or antimicrobial activity of antibiotics against specific bacteria.

Cysteine-silver complexes were prepared and investigated the antimicrobial activity on rubber mat manufactured with waste rubber. We are exposed to harmful bacteria and fungi all the time. We manufactured antimicrobial mat to be imposed to mats that it can prevent generation of bacteria and microorganisms, and restrict their reproduction. Infection of medical devices causes significant morbidity and mortality. For aim of this study, we measured the antimicrobial mat manufactured with cysteine-Ag complex by CCD, FT-IR and NMR. The effect of mole ratio of cysteine-Ag complex on antimicrobial activity to bacteria and fungi is investigated. Reduction rate is evaluated using the Quinn method. Antimicrobial activity of complex on mole ratio 1:4 was effectively inhibited. The complexes had a better antibacterial activity than antifungal activity on rubber mat.

Antimicrobial activities of the Acidic Liquid originated from Carbonized Rice Hull(ALCRH) and the paper treated with ALCRH were investigated to apply ALCRH to functional paper products as a natural antimicrobial agent. ALCRH showed antimicrobial activity for bacteria and yeast, with higher performance for bacteria than for yeast. Antimicrobial activity was not developed on paper coated with ALCRH by bar coater probably due to the evaporation of antimicrobial compounds of ALCRH from the paper surface with time. Saturation of paper with ALCRH was essential to develop antimicrobial activity on the paper. Dipping paper in ALCRH solution was recommended as one of the effective ways to make antimicrobial paper.

Use of chemical preservative for controlling harmful microorganisms in food products has been debated due to public concerns about food quality because of perceived toxic and carcinogenic potential. Thus, use of non toxic natural antimicrobial agents has become essential. This study was investigated to determine the antimicrobial activity of water or ethanol extract of commercially available tea, and of solvent fractionated ethanol extracts obtained from steamed green tea. Both of water and ethanol extracts of green tea(steamed or roasted), oolong tea and black tea exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against gram positive and negative bacteria, but not effective against yeast and mold. Also, antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of 4 different kinds of tea was stronger than that of water extract. Among 4 different tea, ethanol extract of steamed green tea was further fractionated. One thousand g/disk buthanol extract had the strongest antimicrobial activity against bacteria and mold. The concentration of the antimicrobial activity of buthanol extract in tested microorganisms ranged from 125~1000 g/disk except for Rhizopus javanicus. Antimicrobial activity of buthanol extract of steamed green tea was not destroyed by heating at 100oC for 60 min and at 121oC for 15 min, which is very stable over heat treatment. The inhibitory effect of the buthanol extract on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. Growth of both strains was started in the presence of 250 and 500 g/ml after 12 and 24 hour respectively, whereas complete inactivation of both strains was occurred in the presence of 1000 g/ml.
A total of 43 extracts from 21 species of Malaysian flowering plants were screened for antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Antimicrobial activity was tested against fungi, including yeast and candida, as well as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and cytotoxicity was assayed using the CEM-SS and HT-29 cell lines. The methanol extracts of the roots and stems of Plumeria acutifolia showed the highest antimicrobial activity, i.e. against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida lipolytica, and mostly moderate activity against the other microbes such as Aspergillus ochraceous and Saccharomyces lipolytica. Phyllanthus emblica also showed moderate activity especially that of the methanol extracts. The methanol extract of the roots of Plumeria acutifolia showed the strongest cytotoxic activity $(CD_{50}=\;3\;{\mu}g/ml)$. Most of Zingiberaceae species gave negative results for antimicrobial activity and showed low cytotoxic activity.
Antimicrobial activity and bactericidal activity of Caesalpinia sappan L. extracts were investigated against five food-borne pathogens, E. coli, S. aureus, S. typhimurium, B. cereus and L. monocytogenes. Methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. revealed antimicrobial activities against five pathogens. In particular, by paper disc diffusion the highest activity was shown against L. monocytogenes. Antimicrobial activities of methanol extracts showed the most potent activities, but hexane fraction had no activity. Fractions of ethyl acetate and butanol turned out to have higher antimicrobial activities against Gram(+) bacteria than Gram(-) bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration against five food-borne pathogens was 1.563 mg/ml on Gram(+) bacteria and 3.125 mg/ml on Gram(-) bacteria. The result of antimicrobial activity in a shaking flask method showed that bacterial growth rate fell by more than 99.999% at 3.125 mg/ml of methanol extract. The highest rate of viable reduction (99.998%) was shown at 0.781 mg/ml of methanol extract against L. monocytogenes. After five minutes of reaction between test strains and methanol extracts, the growth rates of five kinds of bacteria were reduced by more than 99.999% at a concentration of 100 mg/ml. Therefore, it is suggested that methanol extracts of Caesalpinia sappan L. can be developed as a natural sanitizer or disinfectant.
An edible wild perennial plant with extremely potent antimicrobial activity was found and identified as apiifolia Virgin's Bower (Clematis apiifolia DC) which is easily found around wet wildernesses. Fresh fruit extract of C. apiifolia exhibited minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in the vicinity of 0.1% against various yeasts and of less than or equal to 0.4% for non-lactic acid bacteria. MICs against lactic acid bacteria were about 2.0%. The antimicrobial activity of C. apiifolia fruit was even more potent than that of garlic which has been known for its potent antimicrobial activity. The principal antimicrobial compound of fruit extract of C. apiifolia was isolated and identified by high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography as protoanemonin (a gamma lactone of 4-hydroxy-2,4-pentadienoic acid). The antimicrobial activity of C. apiifolia was stable at high temperatures, and the activity was maintained after heating at $121^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The antimicrobial compound of C. apiifolia was supposed to inhibit microorganisms by reacting with sulfhydryl groups of cellular proteins.
