  • In this study, the physical properties and antifouling were investigated to make the Marine growth antifouling coatings by blending of synthesized silicone resin and pigment with a low surface tension. To examine the film properties and foul release of the prepared coatings, film specimens were prepared with the prepared coatings and anti corrosion coatings. The test results showed that the silicone type antifouling coatings had very excellent antifouling properties rather than any other coatings because of the coating films had followed the low surface tension and elasticity, and prevention of adhesion for marine growth and mechanical adhesions.

  • Recently the problem of the fouling organisms, especially Sn-compounds is expanded to environmental problems from the chemical reaction with imposex and secondary contamination. One of the existing antifouling system, antifouling paints, is regulated from 2012, July because of seriousness about toxic substances such as TBT, mercury, copper and so on. TBT is known that causes a variety of biological inhibition in various chemicals even a very small amount of concentration. So it has been developed to replace it. In this paper, we try to develope a new system with the environmental background and the research of the adhesion characteristics of fouling organisms using a low current, high frequency high voltage pulse power, not toxic compounds.

  • Cosmopolitan green macroalga, Ulva pertusa is a widely spread species in most coastal waters. This benthic alga is appearing on marine objectives causes significantly economical and social problems. To prevent fouling organisms, new antifouling (AF) agents, such as ziram, diruon, zinc pyrithione, copper pyrithione, DBNPA and triclosan are used. However, the evaluations of new antifouling system of those agents strongly need more information on algae species for considering environment effect. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of antifouling system using Ulva spores and Nitzschia pungens. In addition, new AFS were evaluated the toxicity of microalga, Nitzschia pungens. In the motility of Ulva spores, ziram and zinc pyrithione were shown 50% higher inhibition motility than diuron, copper pyritione, DBNPA and triclosan. Ziram was appered the highest AFS of Ulva sore attachment. Copper pyrithione at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/L$ was inhibited 80% growth rate comparison of control. In conclusion, each new AF agents showed their specific AF activities against marine organisms based on this work.

  • The $MnO_x-WO_3-TiO_2$ nanoscale powders were synthesized by sol-gel method in order to prevent the biological fouling on the ships and offshore structures. Powder characteristics and antifouling performance were investigated with respect to the crystalline, microstructure and surface property for application in self-polishing copolymer resins. The high antifouling activity of $TiO_2$-system biocide was attributed to its redox potential and soluble metal ions originating from tungsten oxides according to the improvements in the powder characteristics. Based on their physio-chemical characterizations, the specific surface areas of powders were about $90m^2/g$ and the grain size was in the region 100 ~ 150 nm. Powder characteristics and surface properties were improved by the addition of $WO_3$. Antifouling performance were analyzed according to their surface properties and static immersion tests to determine the effects of the $TiO_2$-system compounds. The surface of 2 wt. % added sample was clean for 5 month. This may be attributed to the ability of $MnO_x-WO_3-TiO_2$ powders to act as a promoter in antifouling agents.

  • We study on the distribution characteristics of antifouling agents such as Sea-nine 211, Irgarol 1051, Diuron using HS-SPME method in southwestern coast of Korea. Short half-life of Sea-nine 211 was distributed in very low concentrations and/or below detection limits in all of the sampling points, both water and sediments samples. Irgarol 1051 was detected to have the highest concentration respectively $6.98{\mu}g/L$, 28.50 ng/g-dry wt in the seawater and sediments, and regional distribution characteristics did not appeared. Strong bioaccumulation and long half-life of Diuron was distributed higher concentration than in all sampling point and was analyzed to have the highest concentration(3882.22 ng/g-dry wt) Mo7(Mokpo)'s sediment. Irgarol 1051 and Diuron distributed in the shipbuilding industry and ship marina are located just at the point to found in high concentrations. In addition, the distribution of the antifouling agent materials were lower in concentration than in inner bay to outter bay in sediments. Antifouling agent materials from these results were contaminated high potential from port and shipbuilding industry located in inner bay.

  • Chlorination has been the most common antifouling method, but alternatives are under searching. In this article, we report how the hydrogen peroxide could enhance the effect of chlorination to prevent fouling by inhibiting larvae settlement and abatement of mussel colonization or by extinct of them; through marine mussel Mytilus edulis. The addition of hydrogen peroxide shows synergic effect on the veliger larvae (up to 19 folds) and effectively reduces required time of mussel mortality by 8-22%. For resolution of micro- and macro-fouling caused by the marine mussel, as well as diminishing of time and conventional chlorine dose could be important factor in favour of environment and economics.

  • In this study, the performance and antifouling properties of polysulfone (PSf) and polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVDF/PVP) membranes in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) were investigated. The membranes were prepared via phase inversion method, and then characterized by a set of analyses including contact angle, porosity and water flux and applied in a lab-scale MBR system. Soluble microbial product (SMP), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), FTIR, gel permission chromatography (GPC) and particle size distribution (PSD) analyses were also carried out for MBR system. The results showed that the MBR with PSf membrane had higher hydrophobic organic compounds which resulted in formation of larger flocs in MBR. However, in this MBR had high compressibility coefficient of cake layer was higher (n=0.91) compared to MBR with PVDF/PVP membrane (n=0.8); hence, the fouling was more profound. GPC analysis revealed that compounds with molecular weight lower than 2 kDa are more formed on PSf membrane more than PVDF/PVP membrane. The results of FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of polysaccharide and protein compounds on the cake layer of both membranes which was in good agreement with EPS analysis. In addition, the results showed that their concentration was higher for the cake on PSf membrane.

  • When the fouling of a vessel occurs, its resistance at sea increases and there is a corresponding increase in fuel consumption. The maintenance cost of the vessel also increases because it is time-consuming to remove the fouling. To solve this problem and minimize environmental contamination of sea-water, there have been recent developments in anti-fouling paints as self-polishing copolymers that not include toxic elements such as tin. When these conventional techniques are applied to vessels, polishing is promoted during the operation whereby friction or vibration with seawater occurs. This leads to enhanced anti-fouling performance. However, when fouling is intensified such as during an anchorage, there is no flow of seawater and polishing is suppressed. This leads to a deterioration of the performance of anti-fouling. To solve these problems, we developed a system that induces vibration in a vessel during anchorage. As such, the deterioration of polishing due to insuf icient flow of seawater is inhibited. The reliability of the ultrasonic antifouling system was evaluated by calculating its repeatability. The removal efficiency of fouling of the proposed system was qualitatively evaluated using test specimens. The test revealed that the value of the coefficient of variation for the reproducibility of the frequency and amplitude was 0.2 % and 4.0 % on average. The degree of fouling of the specimens was the highest at 73.3 g in the No.5 sepcimen. Moreover, efficiency of fouling removal was 93.2 % on average compared to the specimens without the proposed system.
