  • Wet-tissue has been used for baby wipe, cleansing pads, industrial wipes, pain relief, personal hygiene, pet care, and healthcare at home, care facilities, restaurant, and hospital. Raw materials of wet-tissue are mainly natural fibers and synthetic fibers such as cotton, rayon, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and so on. In this study, electrolytic water of NaCl solution was used as fluid in wet-tissue, and the effect of raw materials on antibacterial rate of wet-tissue was investigated. Rayon (100%) showed an excellent antibacterial rate compared with cotton (100%) and rayon:PET (50:50). Antibacterial rate increased as Cl concentration of electrolytic water increased. Absorption of rayon:PET (50:50) was uneven and antibacterial rate of wet-tissue slightly increased by increase of Cl concentration. Antibacterial rate of wet-tissue was 100% under the conditions of more than 1.5 mL of electrolytic water dosage, and dropped under 50% after storage period of 48 hours.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to compare the antibacterial activity of currently purchasable denture cleansers against Candida albicans. Materials and methods: This study used tablet-type denture cleansers, PolidentⓇ, CoolingdentⓇ and FittydentⓇ, along with liquid denture cleansers, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ and Apple vinegarⓇ. The antibacterial activities of denture cleansers were evaluated based on the number of C. albicans and concentrations of the denture cleansers. Results. In the 0.5 × 106 cfu/㎖ culture medium, the C. albicans' death rate of PolidentⓇ was significantly lower than those of FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ, and Apple vinegarⓇ(P<.05). In the 0.5 × 107 cfu/, the C. albicans' death rates of PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ were significantly lower than those of FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ and Apple vinegarⓇ(P<.05). The C. albicans' death rates of PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ were significantly decreased at 0.02 g and 0.01 g. The C. albicans' death rate of FittydentⓇ was significantly decreased at 0.005 g (P<.05). The C. albicans' death rate of HexamedineⓇ was significantly decreased at 1/16 dilution. The C. albicans' death rate of ListerineⓇ was decreased at 1/8 dilution, and the antibacterial activity of Apple vinegarⓇ was decreased at 1/4 dilution (P<.05). Conclusion. As the number of C. albicans increased, the antibacterial activities of the denture cleansers decrease. In the tablet-type denture cleanser, all denture cleansers showed 100% C. albicans' death rate when used at a dose of 1 tablet. One denture cleanser showed the same antibacterial effect with only 1/3 of a tablet. In the liquid type denture cleanser, the level of dilution required was different for each denture cleanser.

  • Recently, with an increase of interest in hygiene of textile products, research related to finishing technology to impart various functionalities, such as antibacterial and deodorizing properties, has also required. Therefore, in this study, the improvement of comfort was examined by analyzing the change of moisture characteristics and antibacterial and deodorizing properties of underwear fabric by chitosan microcapsule(CH-M) finishing. The results revealed that moisture absorption time of the fabric shortened, diffusion rate increased, while absorption rate slightly increased because of microcapsule finishing. In addition, the one-way transfer capacity of the microcapsule finished fabric was 17.69, which improved moisture transfer to one side, while OMMC showed the values of 0.32 and 0.37 for untreated and finished fabrics, respectively, which slightly increased after finishing. In the case of untreated fabric, antibacterial activity was 89.0% against Staphylococcus aureus and 70.3% against Klebsiella pneumoniae; however, both strains showed 99.9% antibacterial activity by CH-M finishing. An excellent bacterial reduction rate was also observed. In the case of the CH-M finished fabric, there was a deodorization effect exceeding 99% up to 120 minutes, and it showed an excellent deodorization effect of more than 99% even after 10 repeated washings.

  • This study aims to examine the antibacterial effects of cotton and silk fabrics naturally dyed with Artemisia princeps extract on antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. The concentrated natural dye of the Artemisia princeps extract was made at the liquor ratio of 1:10 at 40-60℃ for 60 minutes. The concentration of FeSO4·7H2O, Al2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 5H2O mordant was 3% (owf), and the liquor ratio was 1:20. In order to experiment on the antimicrobial activity of the naturally dyed fabrics, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 33591, was used by breeding it in Brain Heart Infusion Agar (BHA) containing Oxacillin (2㎍/ml), Fungizone (2.5㎍/ml), and Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI; Detroit, MI, USA). As a result of examining the bacterial growth reduction rate on dyed cotton and silk fabrics against antibiotic-resistant strains, it was found that the copper mordant in cotton fabric shows the highest antibacterial activity with a bacterial growth reduction rate of 99.9%, and the non-mordant cotton fabric shows the lowest antibacterial activity with a reduction rate of 18.6%. In the case of the naturally dyed silk fabric, it indicates the highest reduction rate of strains in the Al mordanting (94.9%), and Cu mordanting (99.9%).

  • In order to measure the bioavailability of Coptidis Rhizoma preparations, berberine was extracted by the mixture (1:1 v/v) of methanol and water from Coptidis Rhizoma and formulated into pills with some excipients. Disintegration time, dissolution rate, intestinal absorption rate, antibacterial effect, and serum concentration were measured. All pills were disintegrated about 60 minutes in gastric and intestinal juices and disintegration time did not change upon storage at $40^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The pills manufactured using the extract which was extracted with the solvent containing dilute sulfuric acid showed faster dissolution and absorption from the small intestine than the other samples. It also showed not only the largest area under the serum concentration time curve and relative bioavailability, but also more potent antibacterial effect against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterias than the other samples. The correlation of the dissolution rate with absorption rate constant or $t_{max}$ showed a significant linear relationship.

  • A bacterial strain inhibiting the growth of Vibrio anguillarum, the causative agent of vibriosis, was isolated from fish intestines. The isolated strain HS36 was identified as Aerococcus urinaeequi based on the characteristics of the genus according to Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology and by 16S rRNA sequencing. The growth rate and antibacterial activity of strain HS36 in shaking culture were higher than those in static culture, while the optimal pH and temperature for antibacterial activity were 7.0 and 30℃, respectively. The active antibacterial substance was purified from a culture broth of A. urinaeequi HS36 by Sephadex G-75 gel chromatography, Sephadex G-25 gel chromatography, and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Its molecular weight, as estimated by Tricine SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, was approximately 1,000 Da. The antibacterial substance produced by strain HS36 was stable after incubation for 1 h at 100℃. Although its antibacterial activity was optimal at pH 6-8, activity was retained at a pH range from 2 to 11. The purified antibacterial substance was inactivated by proteinase K, papain, and β-amylase treatment. The newly purified antibacterial substance, classified as a class II bacteriocin, inhibited the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enterica, and Vibrio alginolyticus.

  • The dyeability and antibacterial activity of fabrics dyed with lavender extract were analyzed. The results obtained are as follows. The surface color of all the dyed fabrics was tinged with green or yellow of a slight red tint. In the test results of dyeing colorfastness, the colorfastness to sunlight of the dyed fabrics which is both not treated with a mordant and treated with a K2Cr2O7 mordant was excellent with 4th grade of colorfastness. The others showed below 2nd grade. The colorfastness to laundry showed, as most of dyed fabrics were 4th-5th grade, relatively excellent results. The colorfastness to perspiration showed different results respectively according to the kind of both dyed fabrics and mordants. The colorfastness to crocking of the dyed both cotton and silk fabrics showed the excellent result of 4th-5th grade. The colorfastness to dry cleaning of all the dyed fabrics was excellent with 4th-5th grade. In the test results of antibiosis, the dyed fabrics of both cotton and silk didn't show the significant decrease rate for the fungus called Klebsiella pneumoniae. For the fungus called Staphylococcus aureus, the dyed cotton fabric showed the decrease rate of $98\%$ and the dyed silk fabric showed the decrease rate of $50\%$. For the fungus called Chaetomium globosum, the dyed fabric of cotton didn't show the significant antibacterial efficacy, but the dyed fabric of silk showed the significant antibacterial efficacy for the mold fungus called Aspergillus niger.

  • To improve the deodorizing and antibacterial performance of various fabrics (cotton, silk and wool) dyed with pomegranate(Punica granatum L.) extract without mordants, natural colorant solutions, which were extracted from pomegranate using water as an extractant at $90^{\circ}C$ for 90 min with a various liquor ratio (solid natural colorant material/solvent water, weight ratio) from 1:100 to 1:5 were used. To achieve the highest K/S and the deodorizing and antibacterial performance, the best liquor ratio, dyeing bath ratio, dyeing temperature and dyeing time were found to be 1:10, 1:50, $80^{\circ}C$ and 60 min, respectively. The deodorizing performance of dyed cotton, silk and wool fabrics against acetic acid vapor were found to be95,70,90%,respectively. However, all the dyed fabrics displayed outstanding deodorizing performance(99%) against ammonia gas and antibacterial performance(bacteriostatic reduction rate:99.9%) against Staphylococcu aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia(bacteriostatic reduction rate: 99.9%). It is worth noting that pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) colorants notably enhanced the deodorizing and antibacterial performance of cotton, silk and wool fabrics.
