A drone without attaching guns or bombs can be a dangerous weapon, since its motor speed is greater than 3000 rpm, which is similar to that of a mower powered by a LiPo battery. The anti-drone system is the only means of detecting and neutralizing drone attacks. Many defense companies around the world provide solutions using various types of equipment (for example, radar, cameras, jamming guns, and net guns). ETRI has also developed a Low-Altitude Drone Detection (LADD) system consisting of Ku-band radar and an Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera. In this paper, we summarize recent technical advances in anti-drone systems around the world and introduce the features and describe the performance of the LADD system.
The Purpose of this study is to present effective Anti-Drone systems to protect national important facilities against drones that are illegally used by crime groups and terrorists with malicious intents. In order to accomplish the purpose of the study, technical and policy reports regarding Anti-Drone systems, open documents from manufacturers and various research papers are reviewed, and in-depth interviews with experts were conducted. Studies have shown that it is effective to overlay and mix different detection systems so that they can improve detection rates by supplementing each other's advantages and disadvantages, and that the means of incapacitation need to acquire flexibility by using both soft-kill and hard-kill methods in accordance with operational environment for the effective usage. In other words, the establishment of an illegal drone pre-management system, mixed and overlapping detection assets, determining appropriate countermeasures, and multiple distribution of means of incapacitation. The establishment of a protection system for important national facilities through the operation of overlapping and complex anti-drone systems is the most urgent task.
Due to the development of technology and popularization of drone, the so-called "dirty drone" that exploits drones for crimes and terrorism has become a social problem, and it is time to seriously consider the "revenge of drones." Indeed, the cases of threats posed by drones are expanding not only to threats to ground facilities, but also to aviation safety threats, more recently to large-scale events, demonstrations and crimes targeting specific personnel, and terrorism. This research clearly defined the concept of anti-drone when it emerged as a new type of social safety threat as it was abused in crime and terrorism, while response to it was not enough yet. Through this process, it was intended to present an effective anti-drones system. We analyzed the major controversial elements of anti-drone, and defined them as "comprehensive response activities at the legal, institutional and technical levels performed by law enforcement agencies, related technology and industrial entities in a way that prevents, detects, and blocks acts that violate public well-being and order, such as crimes and terrorism caused by the drones." To effectively respond to dirty drones, the authority of law enforcement agencies and the enactment of relevant laws were proposed. In the future, a comprehensive and systematic follow-up study of the anti system should be conducted.

Recently, drones have been used in various field to overcome time and space limitations. However, single drone still has a lot of restriction on transportation wight and travel time. Therefore many studies have been conducted to increase the utilization by swarm of drones. Many things should be additionally considered in order to operate swarming drones securely. Especially the group key management is a challenging research topic in tactical domain due to existence of adversary that has anti-drone skill. In this paper, we proposed an efficient group key management scheme for tactical swarming drone networks where an adversary equipped with anti-drone skills exists. The group key can be updated with a small number of message exchange compared to other convenience schemes. The numerical and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme manages the group key efficiently and securely.

Recently, the technology of drones is developing remarkably. The role of military drones is so great that they can cause serious damage to the enemy's important strategic assets without any damage to our allies in all battlefield environments (land, sea, air). However, the battleship combat management system currently operated by the Korean Navy is vulnerable to defense because there is no customized defense system against drones. As drones continue to develop, they are bound to pose a major threat to navy in the future. This paper proposes a way for the warfare software of naval combat management system sets a combat mode suitable for anti-drone battle, evaluates the threat priority in order to preemptively respond to drone threats and eliminate drone threats through automatic allocation of self-ship-mounted weapons and sensors, and through a test of the improved warfare software in a simulated environment, it was proved that the time to respond to the drone was improved by 62%.

Cost is an important aspect in designing a target drone, however the poor performance of low cost IMU, GPS, and microcontrollers prevents the use of complex algorithms, such as ARS, or INS/GPS to estimate attitude angles. We propose an autopilot which uses rate gyro and GPS only for a target drone to follow a prescribed path for anti-aircraft training. The autopilot consists of an altitude hold, roll hold, and path following controller. The altitude hold controller uses vertical speed output from a GPS to improve phugoid damping. The roll hold controller feeds back yaw rate after filtering the dutch roll oscillation to estimate the roll angle. The path following controller operates as an outer loop of the altitude and roll hold controllers. A 6-DOF simulation showed that the proposed autopilot guides the target drone to follow a prescribed path well from the view point of anti-aircraft gun training.

Applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the military environment have become popular because they require minimum human contribution and can avoid accidents during missions. UAVs are employed in various missions such as reconnaissance, observation, aggression, and protection. Consequently, counter-measures, known as anti-drone technologies, have been developed as well. In order to protect against threats from anti-drone technologies and enhance the survivability of UAVs, this study proposes an evasive measure. The proposed bio-inspired evasive maneuver of a UAV mimics a dragonfly's irregular flight. The unpredictable UAV movement is able to confuse enemies and avoid threats, thereby enhancing the UAV's survivability. The proposed system has been implemented on a commercial UAV platform (AR Drone 2.0) and tested in a real environment. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed flight pattern has larger displacement values compared to a regular flight maneuver, thus making the UAV's position is difficult to predict.

There are increasing demands to provide early warning against intruding drones and cope with potential threats. Commercial anti-drone systems are mostly based on simple target detection by radar reflections. In real scenario, however, it becomes essential to obtain drone radar signatures so that hostile targets are recognized in advance. We present experimental test results that micro-Doppler radar signature delivers partial information on multi-rotor platforms and exhibits limited performance in drone recognition and classification. Afterward, we attempt to generate high resolution profile of flying drone targets. To this purpose, wide bands radar signals are employed to carry out inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) imaging against moving drones. Following theoretical analysis, experimental field tests are carried out to acquire real target signals. Our preliminary tests demonstrate that high resolution ISAR imaging provides effective measures to detect and classify multiple drone targets in air.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the current state of drone terrorism response at such critical national facilities and derive improvements, especially to identify problems in laws and systems to effectively utilize the anti-drone system and present directions for improvement. Method: A qualitative research method was used for this study by analyzing a variety of issues not discussed in existing research papers and policy documents through in-depth interviews with subject matter experts. In-depth interviews were conducted based on 12 semi-structured interviews by selecting 16 experts in the field of anti-drone and terrorism in Korea. The interview contents were recorded with the prior consent of the study participants, transcribed back to the Korean file, and problems and improvement measures were derived through coding. For this, the threats and types were analyzed based on the cases of drone terrorism occurring abroad and measures to establish anti-drone system were researched from the perspective of laws and systems by evaluating the possibility of drone terrorism in the Republic of Korea. Result: As a result of the study, improvements to some of the problems that need to be preceded in order to effectively respond to drone terrorism at critical national facilities in the Republic of Korea, have been identified. First, terminologies related to critical national facilities and drone terrorism should be clearly defined and reflected in the Integrated Defense Act and the Terrorism Prevention Act. Second, the current concept of protection of critical national facilities should evolve from the current ground-oriented protection to a three-dimensional protection concept that considers air threats and the Integrated Defense Act should reflect a plan to effectively install the anti-drone system that can materialize the concept. Third, a special law against flying over critical national facilities should be enacted. To this end, legislation should be enacted to expand designated facilities subject to flight restrictions while minimizing the range of no fly zone, but the law should be revised so that the two wings of "drone industry development" and "protection of critical national facilities" can develop in a balanced manner. Fourth, illegal flight response system and related systems should be improved and reestablished. For example, it is necessary to prepare a unified manual for general matters, but thorough preparation should be made by customizing it according to the characteristics of each facility, expanding professional manpower, and enhancing response training. Conclusion: The focus of this study is to present directions for policy and technology development to establish an anti-drone system that can effectively respond to drone terrorism and illegal drones at critical national facilities going forward.

Drones have been widely used in various fields due to the rapid development of done-related technologies, which causes various problems. The schemes which can track target drones by using signal transmitted by target drones have been investigated as a key technology for anti-drone systems to solve these problems. In this paper, we investigate an illegal drone tracking system based on swarming flight that consists of multiple small drones in order to resolve the limitations of a conventional system that consists of a single drone. In addition, we also propose a scheme with which we can adaptively adjust the separation distance between small drones in a swarm according to channel situations. We analyzed the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of success ratio and the number of movements. The proposed scheme can improve the success ratio and the number of movements by 170% and 63% respectively, compared to the conventional scheme.
