  • To evaluate the effect of the feeding program of brown rice flake with soy milk or cow's milk to school children in rural areas. The survey was conducted twice before and after practice of feeding in March and July of 1990. The survey covered a total of 87 children aged from 7 to 12 in Ypsuk elementary school located in remote village of Sangju county. Kyung Buk province and the branch school of Songmyun elementary school located in remote village of Goisan county. Chung Buk province. Family environment dietary intake anthropometric data and biochemical tests were examined. The results are summerized as follows: The mean balance and food diversity at lunch were significantly lower than those at breakfast and dinner. Mean daily energy and nutrient intakes were below the Korean RDA's except for intakes of niacin vitamin A and ascorbic acid Especially intake of calcium was not reached to 50% of Korean RDA's. Most of anthropometric data of subjects surveyed showed slightly higher results in summer than those in spring except for weight for height and sitting height for height. The percentage of anemic according to hematocrit criterion was not reduced during this period. however urinary urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio was improved. The conbined feeding program of brown rice flake with soy milk or cow's milk was not sufficient to support the children's growth. So the survey recommends the support of goberment to the school lunch program in the remote village.

  • To evaluate the nutritional status of the children in socioeconomically high apartment com-pound a nutritional survey of 276 children in the YunJung elementary school was undertaken in July of 1990. Yunjung elementary school is situated in Youido-dong Youngdeungpo-ku of Seoul and offers school lunch program The results were as follows : Anthropometric data of subjects showed higher results than the Korean standards : 11.0% of subjects were proven to be overweight and 21.6% belonged to obese group. Mean urinary the RDA's except for intake of was 10.2$\pm$3.7 Total daily energy and nutrient intake exceeded the RDA's except for intake of iron. Carbohydrate provided 57% of total energy intake; protein accounted to for 17 ; fat provided 27% The between meals provided 27.4% of total energy intake. The survey clarified that school lunch largely contributed to the nutritional balance of these children. Family environment and anthropometric data were positively correlated with nutrient intake. The survey emphasizes the urgent need to improve the nutrition education of these children.

  • To evaluate the role of obesity and nutrient intake on serum IGF-1 and serotonin levels in 80 elementary school children (aged 10. 8 yr, 47 boys, 33 girls), we investigated the anthropometric data and the nutrient intake by questionnaries including food daily record, and measured serum IGF-1 and serotonin using RIA and HPLC F-1050 respectively. We obtained the following results by obesity index (underweight-, normal-, obese group). The protein intake of normal group was higher than the others (p < 0.05). The underweight and obese groups had snacks more often than the normal group. The obese group preferred‘cookies’and‘fries’more than the other groups. The serum serotonin levels showed weak correlation with fat (r = 0.315, p < 0.01), fiber (${\gamma}$ = 0.280, p < 0.05) and energy intake (r = 0.242, p < 0.05), but no differences in anthropometric data by obesity index. The serum IGF-1 level was significantly correlated height (r = 0.649, p < 0.001), weight (r = 0.437, p < 0.001) and hip (r = 0.417, p < 0.001), but showed weak correlation with energy intake (r = 0.232, p < 0.05) and carbohydrate intake (r = 0.244, p < 0.05). In this study, we could see only partly correlation among the serum IGF-1 and serotonin and obesity and nutrient intake. Forker research is required into consideration of the essential role of these hormones during a growth period.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information requisite in the new sizing system for gloves. KS glove standards' size dimensions, size designation and labeling systems were analyzed. Also, KS glove standards' control sizes were compared to the anthropometric data of 824 Korean adults taken in the previous study. As well, the ISO hand size system was also compared to the anthropometric data of the previous study according to frequency tables of hand length and hand circumference. The size dimensions showed differences among KS standards and there was no size designation and labeling systems existed in KS standards. Among KS glove size systems, protective rubber gloves for radioactive contamination and surgical rubber gloves' size which followed ISO system were accurately indicate the hand size of the person a glove is intended to fit. ISO glove sizing system comprised the control dimensions of hand length and hand circumference. The coverage of ISO size A was 84.8% which was highest among ISO size A. B, C. And in hand circumference 178, 191, 203, 216mm showed the frequencies above 3% and in hand length 167, 175. 183, 191, 199mm showed the frequencies above 3%.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the shape of the lower body influences an individuals' ease in fitting skirts. Subjects in this study consisted of 188 adult females categorized into two groups(the first group were subjects 18∼33 years of age and the second group 34∼59 years of age), whose measurements were taken and then compared between the two groups. The subjects were also categorized into 5 different lower body types. The following are the results; (1) The comparative analysis of the ease from the two a9e groups showed a bigger value of waist girth in the young age group. And thereverse results were found when measuring hip firth. (2) The correlation analysis between the ease and the anthropometric data showed a weak statistical correlation in the older group, and showed no statistical correlation in the younger group. However, there was correlation between the ease and the body measurements as well as between the differences of waist girth and hip girth. (3) The most appropriate average ease of skirt in the young age group was 1.03 cm for waist and 5.71 cm for hip; the most appropriate average ease of skirt in the older age group was -0.76 cm at the waist and 4.10 cm at the hip. (4) Analysis of variance with a special emphasis on the ease of waist girth and hip girth according to the anthropometric data of the lower body revealed a statistically significant correlation.

  • The goal of this study was to develop bicycle apparel pattern for women cyclists. To investigate the pattern of bicycle apparel in Korea, anthropometric data were collected using direct and indirect measurements from October 2002 to July 2003. Three female subjects were recruited from forty measured women cyclists for pilot test. The differences between the responses of prototype bicycle apparel and existing bicycle apparel were compared using mean, standard deviation and t-test. The outfits for cyclists was completed through the three times rectification. Based on the results from the fit and appearance testing, I concluded as follows: The mean value of the center back length, back width, sleeve out-seam, bust & thigh circumference, and weight of cyclists are more than the mean value of the non-cyclists. The result of fit evaluation by judges shows that there is a significant differences in the response to the shoulder, collar, movement of arms of jersey and movement of upper legs, crotch fit and general fit of shots. The result of appearance test between two outfits is no differences the mean value except the waist ease when sitting on cycle. Prototype bicycle apparel pattern for women cyclists developed and tested in this study have the potential to increase field performance and appearance.

  • An efficient torso pattern has been developed to cope with the future trend of order-based, individualized production like the E.C.(Electronic Commerce) in the apparel industry, and to make a database foundation of automatic garment pattern drafting. For this purpose, a non-contact three-dimensional anthropometric measurement system was used to provide a lot of accurate body data for better individual fit, and an automatic pattern drafting system that can easily generate various size patterns and construct a pattern database has been developed too. The subjects of this research were 18 to 24 year-old women whose data had been gathered through the Korean national investigation of anthropometry for industrial standards in 1997 and various body shapes were analyzed by the measurements. And a special software system has been developed to verify the validity of newly proposed drawing rules. The results of sensory evaluation for appearance and moving fitness of the new torso pattern showed a significant improvement in individual fit even for the figures with large deviation from standard shape compared with the results of the traditional one.

  • This study was performed to investigated the difference in the nutritional status of normal children and children with suboptimal iron status. Two hundred and sixty children from 5th grade were divided into 2 groups(normal group and suboptimal group) according to the hematologic parameters of iron(RBC count, hemoglobin, serum ferritin). Normal group was composed of 71 male and 81 female and suboptimal group was consisted of 65 male and 43 female. Fat percentage of children from suboptimal group was 18.9%, which was significantly lower than 22.1% of normal group(p<0.05). TST and MAC of suboptimal group were also lower than those of normal group(p<0.05). Mean intakes of energy, protein, thiamin, riboflavin, iron were lower than those in normal group(p<0.05). suboptimal female students showed 1197.6㎉ of energy intake(63.0% of RDA) and 0.56㎎ of thiamin intake(56% of RDA). Mean RBC count, hematocrit, hemoglobin, ferritin(p<0.01) and FEP(p<0.05) of suboptimal group were lower than those of normal group. Thirty-nine point seven percent of children from suboptimal group was observed with having gastrointestinal disease which was significantly higher than 22.1% of normal group. • Purpose: To analyze data from an observational, prospective, cumulative registry study in 805 hypogonadal men stratified by mild or moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) according to International Prostate Symptom Score. Materials and Methods: A total of 412 men underwent testosterone therapy (TTh) with injectable testosterone undecanoate, 393 men served as untreated controls. Measures of urinary function, anthropometric and metabolic parameters were performed at least twice per year. Results: Data from 615 men with mild LUTS (253 treated, 362 untreated) and 190 with moderate-to-severe LUTS (159 treated, 31 untreated) were available. During a follow-up period of 8 years a significant improvement of LUTS was noted for all TTh-patients whereas the control-groups showed deterioration or fluctuation around initial values. Despite advancing age, TTh fully prevented worsening of symptoms. In parallel, a considerable improvement of anthropometric parameters, lipids and glycemic control, blood pressure, C-reactive protein, and quality of life was found. Moderate-to-severe LUTS was associated with worse cardiometabolic risk profile at baseline as well as worse cardiovascular outcomes during follow-up in comparison to mild LUTS. Effect size of TTh was more pronounced in men with moderate-to-severe than with mild LUTS. Conclusions: Correcting hypogonadism by TTh is highly effective and safe for improving LUTS in hypogonadal men. TTh may also improve cardiometabolic risk and major adverse cardiovascular events.
