For identification and apportionment of sources emitting particulate matters in environment, the multi-elemental characterization of size-density fractionated particulate matters was carried out. Eight types of samples were tested; soil, flyash released from burning of bunker-Coil, diesel oil, coal, and soft coal, urban road-way dust, urban dust fall, and airborne particulate matter. The fractions of particulate matters obtained by heavy liquid separation methos with a series of dichloromethane-bromoform were then analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Ni, Cr, Cu, An, Fe, Al, and Mg. Each sample showed a different concentration profile as a function of density, and a number of useful conclusions concerning characterization of elemental distribution were obtained. From the density distributions of elements in soil, the maximum value was found for all elements in the density range of 2.2 $\sim 2.9g.cm^{-3}$, including the density of $SiO_2$. However, the distribution of metallic compounds with the density lower than $2.2g.cm^{-3}$ was prevalent in urban roadway dust, urban dust fall, and airborne particulate matter. And the density distribution curves of these urban dusts also have the higher distribution at the density of 2.2 - 2.9g.cm^{-3}$, including the density of wind-blown silica. This tendency generally was prevalent in the natural source elements, such as Al, Fe, Mn, and Mg. The maximum values were found in the density ranges of 1.3 $\sim 2.2g.cm^{-3}$ from the density distribution of elements in oil fired flyash. These distributions of anthropogenic source elements, such as Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cr were higher predominately than those of natural source elements. And the higher distribution was found in the density range of $2.2 \sim 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ from the density distribution of elements in coal and soft-coal fired flyash. These distributions showed similar patterns to soil. But anthropogenic source elements somewhat predominated at the density ranges of $1.3 \sim 2.2g.cm{-3} and 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ to soil. Therefore the higher distribution of anthropogenic source elements in the density ranges of $1.3 \sim 2.2g.cm^{-3} and 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ was considered as anthropogenic origin.

Continuous atmospheric CO$_2$measurements measured during the 1 year(1998.8∼1999.8) at Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory (KGAWO) in Anmyeon-do are analyzed by the selecting method which is recommended by WDCGG to get background CO$_2$. This method can reject data based on two criteria: the instability of CO$_2$ concentration within 1 hour from hourly standard deviation (hourly variability$\leq$ 0.6 ppm first selection) and the large changes in the CO$_2$ concentration from one hour to the nex(∼$\leq$0.3 ppm, second selection). We could obtain hourly background CO$_2$ of 37% in first selection and 20% in second selection during the l year. That are a little less than those of Ryori station in Japan. especially, the cases of background CO$_2$ which is selected were few during the summer. That is caused by affection of vegetation and anthropogenic source. After the selecting methods are applied, the cases which is selected for easterly wind decrease remarkably according to the analysis of wind direction about continuous CO$_2$ .That was affected by anthropogenic source from the east area.
Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) is one of six greenhouse gases listed up in the Kyoto Protocol, and it effects a strong global warming because of its much greater global warming potential (GWP), by 310 times over a 100-year time horizon, than $CO_2$. Although such $N_2O$ emissions from both natural and anthropogenic sources occur, the latter can be controlled using suitable abatement technologies, depending on them, to reduce $N_2O$ below acceptable or feasible levels. This paper has extensively reviewed the anthropogenic $N_2O$ emission sources and their related compositions, and the state-of-the-art non-catalytic and catalytic technologies of the emissions controls available currently to representative, large $N_2O$ emission sources, such as adipic acid production plants. Challengeable approaches to this source are discussed to promote establishment of advanced $N_2O$ emission control technologies.

Pinic acid (PA) and cis-pinonic acid (CPA) in the atmospheric particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to a nominal $10{\mu}m$ ($PM_{10}$) were analyzed for the samples collected during the period of April 2010 to April 2011 at Jongro in Seoul. Both pinic acid and cis-pinonic acid showed higher seasonal average concentrations in summer (PA; $18.9ng/m^3$, CPA; $16.0ng/m^3$) than winter (PA; $5.3ng/m^3$, CPA; $5.9ng/m^3$). They displayed a seasonal pattern associated with temperature reflecting the influence on emissions of ${\alpha}-pinene$ and ${\beta}-pinene$ from conifers and their photochemical reaction. These results were confirmed through Pearson correlation coefficient between CPA, PA and $O_3+NO_2$, temperature. CPA was only correlated with n-alkanes ($C_{29}$, $C_{31}$, $C_{33}$) from biogenic source. PA was correlated with n-alkanes ($C_{29}$, $C_{31}$, $C_{33}$), n-alkanoic acid ($C_{20}$, $C_{22}$, $C_{24}$) from biogenic source and n-alkanes ($C_{28}$, $C_{30}$, $C_{32}$), and n-alkanoic acid ($C_{16}$, $C_{18}$) from anthropogenic source. These results showed that the formation of PA and CPA from ${\alpha}-pinene$ and ${\beta}-pinene$ is related to organic compounds from biogenic source. And it is possible for PA to be effected by organic compounds from anthropogenic source.
The chemical composition and properties of soil were determined at selected sites, such as Loess plateau, Gobi and sand deserts in northern China, where most dust storms occur. Although the transport of this sort of dust storms to Korean peninsula is a well-documented phenomenon, there is not enough information about the very source regions. In this reason, this study tried to measure the chemical composition, including soil elements, anthropogenic elements and ions for soil samples so that certain properties of some major source regions of Asian Dust can be provided. Furthermore, the results are classified into four types of soil like Loess, Loess & sand, Gobi, and sand in order to identify the characteristics and difference among the types. $(X/Al)_{crust}$ values for each soil type were also calculated in this study and compared with those of other references including Asian Dust material(ADM). The results indicated that Ca contribution was higher than Al in all the soil types of this study including ADM and, compared with the values of urban area, contribution of anthropogenic elements such as Cr, Pb, Zn was quite low. However, it must be noted that there is such a variation in the result of soil composition, but it is also certain that the very source region soil composition resolved from this study could support the enhanced study on Asian Dust phenomenon in Korea.

We present optical and microphysical particle properties of aerosol retrieved by multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Anmyun island ($36.32^{\circ}N$, $126.19^{\circ}E$), Korea. The results present aerosol properties in various height layers of the atmospheric pollution layers observed over the Korean peninsula on eight consecutive days (27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 May, 4, 5 and 7 June) in 2005 at Anmyun island. We found anthropogenic pollution on 27, 28, and 29 May and local haze on other measurement days. The origin of the particle plumes was determined by simulations of FLEXPART. The source regions of the particles resulted in rather clear differences between the optical and microphysical properties of the pollution layers. The single-scattering albedo of anthropogenic aerosols from China ($0.91{\pm}0.01$ at 532 nm) were lower than the single-scattering albedo of local haze aerosols ($0.95{\pm}0.01$ at 532 nm). Local haze aerosols show larger effective radii of $0.24{\pm}0.02\;{\mu}m$ at relative humidity of 55~75%. The effective radii of anthropogenic aerosols are $0.20{\pm}0.2\;{\mu}m$ and $0.27\;{\mu}m$ at relative humidity of 25~50%.

The n-alkanes which are stable compounds in the atmosphere are emitted by anthropogenic sources and biological sources. The goal of this study is to understand characteristics of n-alkane distributions in $PM_{2.5}$ of the Anmyeon Island which is one of background site in Korea. The concentration of n-alkanes in $PM_{2.5}$ was measured at Anmyeon Island for one year from June 2015 to May 2016. The average concentration of total n-alkanes (${\sum}$ n-alkanes) from C20 to C34 was $14.02{\pm}10.26ng\;m^{-3}$ and ranged from 1.77 to $47.65ng\;m^{-3}$. Various diagnostic parameters were used to identify the source. As a result, it is considered that Anmyeon Island had a large influence of biological sources during non-heating period, while the influence of anthropogenic emission during the heating period was significant. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was performed and yielded three components that accounted for 93.6% of the total variance in n-alkanes. Factor 1, which accounted for 42.3% of the total variance, indicated anthropogenic source including fossil fuel and biomass combustion, while, Factor 3 was interpreted as the biological sources such as plant wax.

In this study, the concentrations of major anthropogenic volatile organic compounds(VOCs) which include benzene, toluene, m, p-xylene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene were measured at the Nan-ji-do landfill site during the spring and fall season of 2000. the temporal distribution characteristics of these VOCs were investigated over varying time scale. According to our study, the mean concentration of those species were computed to be 1.65$\pm$2.68(benzene), 9.62$\pm$9.32(toluene), 1.84$\pm$2.90(m, p-xylene), 0.83$\pm$1.43(o-xylene), and 1.17$\pm$1.21 ppb(ethylbenzene). The VOCs levels in the study area are not distinctively higher than the level typically found in urban area that can be subject to the influence of various anthropogenic source processes. Inspection of their temporal trends exhibited various patterns for the diurnal(and seasonal) cycle. Although each species showed distinctive patterns in temporal distribution trends, we were able to find the strong correlations among most concurrently measured VOCs except for benzene.

To study the dispersion process and residence time of anthropogenic pollutant in Masan bay, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model, EFDC, is applied. Particle tracking model simulated the instantaneous release of particles emulating discharge from river and wastewater treatment plant to show the behaviour of pollutant in terms of water circulation and water exchange. Modelled outcomes for water circulation were in good agreement with tidal elevation and current data. The results of particle tracking model show that over half of particles released from northern Masan bay transport to out of area while the particles from Dukdong wastewater treatment plant transport to northern area. This meant pollution source from inside and outside of the northern area can affect water quality of northern Masan bay.

The concentration of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) was measured concurrently with relevant environmental parameters from Yang-Jae monitoring station in Seoul during Sept. 1997 to June 2002. Although data collection was disrupted for certain periods, the grand mean concentration of Hg for this five year period was found at 5.32 $\pm$ 3.53 ng m$^{-3}$ (N = 27,170). Because of short resolution of data acquisition, we were able to examine the temporal variability of Hg at varying time scale. The diurnal variability of Hg, when investigated for each of those five years, indicated consistently the dominance of nighttime over daytime. If examined at seasonal scale, Hg level was systematically higher during winter/spring than summer/fall period. The results of this short-term variability were best explained by the combined effects of such factors as meteorological conditions (formation of inversion layer and seasonal changes) and anthropogenic source processes. However, examination of long-term variation Pattern was much more complicated to explain. Thus, extension of our study is needed to diagnose the future direction in long-term trend of Hg behavior.
