  • There is increasingly interested in the measurement of antenna's characteristics for one's manufacture according to one's various application. Due to this, the antenna measurement system need be made with more and more great precision. On measuring of the antenna's characteristic, the conventional system handled by human generates the error due to controlling the position of the system by user. Therefore there need be introduced the automatic measurement system of antenna's characteristic. In this paper, we propose antenna extraction algorithm for the Antenna automatic measurement system of antenna's characteristic. The proposed algorithm gets the antenna image from antenna measurement system, extracts an antenna object from the image, and extracts the parameters for antenna's slant and antenna's location. The extracted parameters is used to correct location and distortions of the antenna and automatic measurement. The proposed algorithm is applied to the patch antenna. The results show that antenna's object is efficiently extracted and the angle for correcting the error is calculated well.

Measurement Guideline of Fresnel-Field Antenna Measurement Method

  • In this letter, a parametric analysis of the Fresnel-field antenna measurement method is performed for a square aperture. As a result, the optimum number of Fresnel fields for one far-field point is guided as $M_{opt}=N_{opt}=D^2/{\lambda}R+5$, where D is the antenna diameter, ${\lambda}$ is the wavelength, and R is the distance between the source antenna and the antenna under test. For the aperture size 5 ${\leq}$ $L_x/{\lambda}$ ${\leq}$ 20, the tolerable distances for gain errors of 0.5 dB and 0.2 dB can be guided as $R_{0.5\;dB}$ ${\approx}$ $1.2Lx/{\lambda}$ and $R_{0.2\;dB}$ ${\approx}$ $2.0L_x/{\lambda}$, where $L_x$ is the lateral length of the square aperture. The tolerable distances for 20 ${\leq}$ $L_x/{\lambda}$ ${\leq}$ 200 are also proposed. This measurement guideline can be fully utilized when performing the Fresnel-field antenna measurement method.

Planar near-field antenna measurement method based on symplectic relation and reaction concept

  • Using symplectic relation and reaction concept, we propose a planar near-field antenna measurement method. A generalized probe compensation equation is deduced to obtain the probe correction formulation. To verify our approach, a reflector antenna with $1{\times}2$ horn array is fabricated and measured in the near-field measurement facility. The near-field measurement results are compared with the physical optics (PO) simulation. The results of measurement and simulation agree very well near to the mainbeam.

  • In this paper, we designed and verified a Far-field measurement system for measuring the performance of an antenna operating in millimeter wave(W-band). For the antenna test, a measurement system should be selected according to the type of antenna, measurement items, measurement environment and period, etc. In the case of near-field measurement, it takes a lot of time because the number of measurement items increases when the antenna has multiple channels or various beams. Such an antenna can reduce the measurement time through Far-field measurement, and only necessary measurement items can be measured. Therefore, this study secured precise alignment of the far-field measurement system using a high-power laser and improved the measurement accuracy by applying a double amplifier system. The designed system was built in the anechoic chamber and verified by comparison with the verified Near-field measurement system.

  • Measurement uncertainty assessment is very important in measurement and calibration. RRL provides antenna calibration services for EMI test. Reliability of EMI test depends on accurate antenna calibration. Antenna calibration results have to be accompanied with measurement uncertainty for its better reliability. In the late of 2005, CISPR issued the CISPR/A/644/C which describes the antenna calibration and measurement uncertainty. In this paper, on the basis of CISPR/A/644/C, we provide the measurement uncertainty values for dipole antenna calibration at the Calibration Test Site(CALTS) of Icheon. The antenna calibration method is 3-antenna height-scanning-averaging method, which measures the free-space antenna factor. We also considered all uncertainty sources that can affect measurement results during calibration.

  • In this paper, parametric analysis of Fresnel region antenna measurement method has been performed for the square aperture having the uniformly distributed current. The optimum number of Fresnel region field and the tolerable distance between two antennas have been guided. This parametric analysis could be fully utilized when performing Fresnel region antenna measurement method. Other types of current distribution and aperture shape will be investigated in the near future

  • In this paper, we proposed the transmit beam measurement method of active phased array antenna, which is installed in Korea's first developed naval medium range radar, using near-field measurement facility. The pulse-mode high power characteristics of active phased array antenna's trasmit-beam make it difficult to measure with general near-field measurement facilities where low power continuous RF signals are used. Thus, in this paper, the measurement method of active phased array antenna's transmit beam in conjunction with the near-field measurement facility, which is suitable for the high-power transmit beam measurement, and PNA-X network analyzer(Agilent Technologies), which can support pulse-mode measurement, was proposed and measured by near-field measurement techniques. And the EIRP(Effective Isotropic Radiated Power), the transmit characteristic of active phased array antenna, was measured by the near field measurement techniques and compared to numerical estimation which was nearly equal with small difference of 0.1 dB.

  • In this paper, the calculation using simulation and two measurement methods for G/T of the telemetry are analyzed. Antenna gain and noise temperature are calculated by using ICARA and Antenna Noise Temperature Calculator. System G/T were calculated by using Antenna gain/noise temperature, LNA gain/noise temperature, cable loss. The first G/T measurement method is Y-factor measurement method, which is to calculate G/T by comparing LNA noise temperature and a signal level difference when an antenna and a 50ohm termination are respectively connected to an LNA input terminal Second method is Solar calibration measurement method that is to calculate G/T by comparing noise level difference when looking at the sun and lowest level point. Finally, the accuracy was reviewed by comparing the G/T calculation results with the two measurement methods, and the optimal measurement method according to antenna performance and operating environment was presented.

A Study on the Radiation Pattern Measurement Technique of Shipboard Antenna (함정 탑재 안테나의 복사패턴 측정기법 연구)

  • It is important to test and evaluate the variation degree of ship-mounted antenna radiated power with respect to all directions in order to use more effectively antennas that installed on naval ships. The naval ship has various sensors for navigation, communication and electronic warfare, etc. And the performance of these sensors extremely depends on the various characteristics of antenna system to transmit and receive electromagnetic wave. The radiated power pattern of the antenna differs from all aspect angles of the ship because of complex superstructures. It is important to know the weak point(direction) of antenna radiation for appropriate operation. Therefore, the ARP(Antenna Radiation Pattern) of shipboard antennas is measured for the all aspect angles. The results of ARP measurement are utilized as reference for antenna arrangement of newly-built same class warship. This study also describes the development results for the ARP measurement technique, software design and test procedures to measure the radiation pattern of communication equipment antennas using the fixed test site.

  • This paper describes the measurement system of antenna factor using standard antenna method in OATS(Open Area Test Site) of KRISS(Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science) and methods for reducing an environmental noise affecting antenna factor. The range of measurement frequency is 30 - 1000 MHz, all control and data acquisition were done by computer automatically. Measurement results of antenna factors are presented, total uncertainty of antenna factor is $\pm$1 dB.
