Understanding exoelectrogenic reactions of the bioanode is limited due to its complexity and the absence of analytics. Impedance and thermodynamics of bioanode, abiotic anode, and riboflavin-amended anode were evaluated. Activation overpotential of the bioanode was negligible compared with that of the abiotic anode. Impedance spectroscopy shows that the bioanode had much lower charge transfer resistance and higher capacitance than the abiotic anode in low frequency reaction. In high frequency reaction, the impedance parameters, however, were relatively similar between the bioanode and the abiotic anode. At open-circuit impedance spectroscopy, a high frequency arc was not detected in the abiotic anode in Nyquist plot. Addition of riboflavin induced a phase angle shift and created curvature in high-frequency arc of the abiotic anode, and it also drastically changed impedance spectra of the bioanode.

The reaction between Li2CO3 and Cl2 was investigated to verify its occurrence during a carbon-anode-based oxide reduction (OR) process. The reaction temperature was identified as a key factor that determines the reaction rate and maximum conversion ratio. It was found that the reaction should be conducted at or above 500℃ to convert more than 90% of the Li2CO3 to LiCl. Experiments conducted at various total flow rate (Q) / initial sample weight (Wi) ratios revealed that the reaction rate was controlled by the Cl2 mass transfer under the experimental conditions adopted in this work. A linear increase in the progress of reaction with an increase in Cl2 partial pressure (pCl2) was observed in the pCl2 region of 2.03-10.1 kPa for a constant Q of 100 mL·min-1 and Wi of 1.00 g. The results of this study indicate that the reaction between Li2CO3 and Cl2 is fast at 650℃ and the reaction is feasible during the OR process.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been rapidly expanding from IT based applications to uses in electric vehicles (EVs), smart grids, and energy storage systems (ESSs), all of which require low cost, high energy density and high power density. The increasing demand for LIBs has resulted in increasing price of the lithium source, which is a major obstacle to wider application. To date, the possible depletion of lithium resources has become relevant, giving rise to the interest in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) as promising alternatives to LIBs. A lot of transition metal compounds based on conversion-alloying reaction have been extensively investigated to meet the requirement for the anodes with high energy density and long life-time. In-depth understanding the electrochemical reaction mechanisms for the transition metal compounds makes it promising negative anode for NIBs and provides feasible strategy for low cost and large-scale energy storage system in the near future.
To satisfy the growing demand for high-performance batteries, diverse novel anode materials with high specific capacities have been developed to replace commercial graphite. Among them, cobalt hydroxides have received considerable attention as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries as they exhibit a high reversible capacity owing to the additional reaction of LiOH, followed by conversion reaction. In this study, we introduced graphene in the fabrication of Co(OH)2-based anode materials to further improve electrochemical performance. The resultant Co(OH)2/graphene composite exhibited a larger reversible capacity of ~1090 mAh g-1, compared with ~705 mAh g-1 for bare Co(OH)2. Synchrotron-based analyses were conducted to explore the beneficial effects of graphene on the composite material. The experimental results demonstrate that introducing graphene into Co(OH)2 facilitates both the conversion and reaction of the LiOH phase and provides additional lithium storage sites. In addition to insights into how the electrochemical performance of composite materials can be improved, this study also provides an effective strategy for designing composite materials.

Finding technical issues associated with equipment scale-up is an important subject for the investigation of pyroprocessing. In this respect, electrolytic reduction of 1 kg $UO_2$, a unit process of pyroprocessing, was conducted using graphite as an anode material to figure out the scale-up issues of the C anode-based system at pilot scale. The graphite anode can transfer a current that is 6-7 times higher than that of a conventional Pt anode with the same reactor, showing the superiority of the graphite anode. $UO_2$ pellets were turned into metallic U during the reaction. However, several problems were discovered after the experiments, such as reaction instability by reduced effective anode area (induced by the existence of $Cl_2$ around anode and anode consumption), relatively low metal conversion rate, and corrosion of the reactor. These issues should be overcome for the scale-up of the electrolytic reducer using the C anode.
LSGM$(La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}})$ is the very promising electrolyte material for lower-temperature operation of SOFCs, especially when realized in anode-supported cells. But it is notorious for reacting with other cell components and resulting in the highly resistive reaction phases detrimental to cell performance. LDC$(La_{0.4}Ce_{0.6}O_{1.8})$, which is known to keep the interfacial stability between LSGM electrolyte and anode, was adopted in the anode-supported cell, and its effect on the interfacial reactivity and electrochemical performance of the cell was investigated. No severe interfacial reaction and corresponding resistive secondary phase was found in the cell with LDC buffer layer, and this is due to its ability to sustain the La chemical potential in LSGM. The cell exhibited the open circuit voltage of 0.64V, the maximum power density of 223 $mW/cm^2$, and the ohmic resistance of $0.17{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. These values were much improved compared with those from the cell without any buffer layer, which implies that formation of the resistive reaction phases in LSGM and then deterioration of the cell performance is resulted mainly from the La diffusion from LSGM electrolyte to anode.
For recycling of tantalum from obsolete condenser, physical separations and chlorination of tantalum scraps with $Cl_2$ and $CCl_4$ were investigated. The recovery ratio of tantalum from obsolete condenser was 98% by using a multidisciplinary process of crushing by stamp mill, wet gravity separation by the shaking table, and air classification. In the chlorination reaction of non-oxidized Ta anode with $Cl_2$, the highest weight loss ratio is at least 60%, while in the chlorination reaction of Ta anode with $CCl_4$, the reaction rate for the oxidized Ta anode is faster than that of the non-oxidized Ta anode.
Graphite and carbonaceous materials showed an excellent capability as a negative electrode in Li-ion batteries because Li-ion can be intercalated and de-intercalated reversibly within most carbonaceous materials of layered structure. Also, the electrochemical potential of Li-intercalated carbon anode is almost identical with that of Li metal. In the present study, mesocarbon microbeads(MCMB) were used as anode electrode and its properties of charge/discharge and interfacial reaction with electrolyte were studied by Potentiostat/Galvanostat test, FT-IR analysis, XRD and SEM. The passivation film of solid-state was formed as the interface between electrode and electrolyte as the cell reaction began and, once formed, became thicker with repeated charge/discharge process. Also, the relationship between the passivation film formed at the electrode interface and storage capacity was discussed.

Fuel cell is a device that directly converts chemical energy in the form of a fuel into electrical energy by way of an electrochemical reaction. In the anode for a high temperature fuel cell, nickel or nickel alloy has been used in consideration of the cost, oxidation catalystic ability of hydrogen which is used as fuel, electron conductivity, and high temperature stability in reducing atmosphere. Most MCFC stacks currently operate at an average temperature of $650^{\circ}C$. There is some gains with decreased temperature in MCFC to diminish the electrolyte loss from evaporation and the material corrosion, which could improve the MCFC life. However, operating temperature has a strong related on a number of electrode reaction rates and ohmic losses. Baker et al. reported the effect of temperature (575 to $650^{\circ}C$). The rates of cell voltage loss were 1.4mV/$^{\circ}C$ for a reduction in temperature from 650 to $600^{\circ}C$, and 2.16mV/$^{\circ}C$ for a decrease from 600 to $575^{\circ}C$. The two major contributors responsible for the change in cell voltage with reducing operation temperature are the ohmic polarization and electrode polarization. It appears that in the temperature range of 550 to $650^{\circ}C$, about 1/3 of the total change in cell voltage with decreasing temperature is due to an increase in ohmic polarization, and the electrode polarization at the anode and cathode. In addition, the oxidation reaction of hydrogen on an ordinary nickel alloy anode in MCFC is generally considered to take place in the three phase zone, but anyway the area contributing to this reaction is limited. Therefore, in order to maintain a high performance of the fuel cell, it is necessary to keep this reaction responsible area as wide as possible, that is, it is needed to keep the porosity and specific surface area of the anode at a high level. In this study effective anodes are prepared for low temperature MCFC capable of enhancing the cell performance by using zirconium hydride at least in part of anode material.

Developing novel anode materials to replace the Pt anode currently used in electrolytic reduction is an important issue on pyroprocessing. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of TiN was investigated as the conductive ceramic anode which evolves O2 gas during the reaction. The feasibility and stability of the TiN anode was examined during the electrolytic reduction of UO2. The TiN anode could electrochemically convert UO2 to metallic U in a LiCl–Li2O molten salt electrolyte. No oxidation of TiN was observed during the reaction; however, the formation of voids in the bulk section appeared to limit the lifetime of the TiN anode.
