  • This study investigates the optimal conditions for electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide production and the application of the electro-Fenton process using DSA electrodes. The influences of parameters for the hydrogen peroxide generation such as electrode materials, electrolyte concentration, current, pH, air flow rate and electrode distance were investigated using a laboratory scale batch reactor. The relative performance for hydrogen peroxide generation of each of the six electrodes is : Ru-Sn-Ti > Ru-Sn-Sb > Ru > Ir > Pt > Sn-Sb. Optimum NaCl dosage, current and air flow rate were 2.0 g/l, 12.5 A and 2 l/min, respectively. When the pH is low, hydrogen peroxide concentration was high. Electrode distance dos not effect to a hydrogen peroxide generation. A complete color removal was obtained for RhB (200 mg/l) at the 8 min mark of the electro-Fenton process under optimum operation conditions of $Fe^{2+}$ 0.105 g/l and 5.0 A. The electro-Fenton process increased initial reaction and decreased final reaction time. However the effect was not high.

  • Background: Cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) is a promising material because of a high detection efficiency, good energy resolution, and operability at room temperature. However, the cost of CZT dramatically increases as its size increases. In this study, to achieve a large effective volume with relatively low cost, an array structure comprised of individual virtual Frisch-grid CZT detectors was proposed. Materials and Methods: The prototype consisted of 2 × 2 CZTs, a holder, anode and cathode printed circuit boards (PCBs), and an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). CZTs were used and the non-contacting shielding electrode method was applied for virtual Frisch-grid effect. An ASIC was used, and the holder and the PCBs were fabricated. In the current system, because the CZTs formed a common cathode, a total of 5 channels were assigned for data processing. Results and Discussion: An experiment using 137Cs at room temperature was conducted for 10 minutes. Energy and timing information was acquired and the depth of interaction was calculated by the timing difference between the signals of both electrodes. Based on obtained three-dimensional position information, the energy correction was carried out, and as a result the energy spectra showed the improvements. In addition, a Compton image was reconstructed using the iterative method. Conclusion: The virtual Frisch-grid CZT detector based on the array structure was developed and the energy spectra and the Compton image were successfully acquired.

  • Amorphous agglomerates of carbon nanospheres (CNS) with a diameter range of 10-50 nm were synthesized using the solution combustion method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed a densely packed high surface area of $SP^2$-hybridized carbon; however, there were no crystalline structural components, as can be seen from the scanning electron microscopy, HRTEM, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analyses. Electrochemical and thermo catalytic decomposition study results show that the material can be used as a potential electrode candidate for the fabrication of energy storage devices and also for the production of free hydrogen if such devices are used in a fluidized bed reactor loaded with the as-prepared CNS as the catalyst bed.

  • In addition to the energy storage facilities based on high power technologies, Electric double layer capacitors(EDLC) are today's candidate for power quality stabilization. However, its low energy density is often inhibiting factor for application of electric power industry. Hybrid supercapacitor is an promising energy storage device that positioned between conventional EDLC and Li-ion battery. This paper describes the preparation and characteristics of a hybrid supercapacitor and module for power quality stabilization. A cylindrical 3200F hybrid supercapacitor ($60{\times}74.5mm$) was assembled by using the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ electrode as an anode and activated carbon as a cathode. It shows 2.5 times higher energy density than conventional EDLC with the same volume. In order to determine the characteristics of the hybrid supercapacitor Module for uninterruptible power supply (UPS), hybrid supercapacitor cells were connected in series with active balancing circuit. At even the high current density of 14A(10C), Module prepared by 18 cells showed the capacitance of 170F at 30~50V, suggesting the applicability for UPS.

  • Atomic layer deposition (ALD) provides self-limiting processes based on chemisorption-based reactions. Such unique features allow for superior step coverage, atomic-scale control in thickness, and surface-dependent reaction controls. Furthermore, the surface-limited deposition enables the artificial deposition of oxide and/or metallic materials onto the porous systems as long as the supply is guaranteed in terms of time in providing reactant species and removing the byproducts and redundant reactants. The unique feature of atomic layer deposition is applied to solid oxide fuel cells whose incorporates two porous cathode and anode compartments in addition to the ionic electrolyte. Specific materials are deposited to the surface sites of porous electrodes, with the aim to controlling the triple phase boundaries crucial for the optimized SOFC performances. The effect of ALD on the SOFC performance is characterized using current-voltage characteristics in addition to frequency-dependent impedance spectroscopy. The pros and cons of ALD-controlled SOFCs are discussed toward high-performance SOFC systems.

  • $({Li}_{0.5}0{La}_{0.5}){TiO}_3$ (LLTO) solid electrolyte was grown on LiCo{O}_2 (LCO) cathode films deposited on $Pt/Ti{O}-2/Si{O}_2/Si$ substrate using pulsed laser deposition for all-solid-state lithium microbattery. LLTO solid electrolyte exhibits an amorphous phase at various deposition temperatures. LLTO films deposited at 10$0^{\circ}C$ showed a clear interrace without any chemical reaction with LCO, and showed an initial discharge capacity of 50 $\mu$Ah/cm$^2$-$\mu$m and capacity retention of 90 % after 100 cycles with Li anode in 1mol$ LiCl{O}_4$ in propylene carbonate (PC). The increase of capacity retention in LLTO/LCO structure than LCO itself was attributed to the structural stability of LCO cathode films by the stacked LLTO. The cells of LLTO/LCO with LLTO grown at $100^{\circ}C$ showed a good cyclic property of 63.6 % after 300 cycles. An amorphous LLTO solid electrolyte is possible for application to solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium microbattery.

  • Three anode configurations of six-jet, cone-jet and cylindrical-jet are tested for their analytical performance under power mode operation. The effect of pressure, power and gas flow rate on atomic absorption signals have been studied. The increase of atomic absorption signal of sample element is observed at a fixed pressure in all configurations as the gas flow rate increase up to 300-600 seem, and as the power dissipated in the glow discharge cell increase. The lower the pressure is in the glow discharge cell at a fixed discharge power and argon flow rate, the greater the absorbance of sample element is. The optimum conditions are taken from these data and a calibration curve of Cu in low-alloy steel sample is obtained. In this calibration curve, six-jet configuration shows the best analytical results varies as the sample element.

  • The corrosion and degradation factors of a current collector in a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) were investigated to determine the optimized coating thickness of nickel on STS316L. The results show that the surface morphology and electrical properties depended on the nickel coating thickness. The surface morphology gradually changed from a flat to a porous structure along as the nickel coating thickness decreased, and the electrical resistance of the nickel-coated STS316L increased as the nickel coating thickness decreased. This can be attributed to the diffusion of elements of Fe and Cr from the substrate through the nickel grain boundaries. Additionally, carburization in the metal grains or grain boundaries in an anodic environment was found to influence the electrical properties due to matrix distortion. The resistance of Cr-oxide layers formed in an anodic environment causes a drop in the potential, resulting in a decrease in the system efficiency.

  • It was investigated that traps were generated inside of the oxide and at the oxide interfaces by the stress bias voltage. The charge state of the traps can easily be changed by application of low voltage after the stress high voltage. It determined to the relative traps locations inside the oxides ranges from 113.4$\AA$to 814$\AA$ with capacitor areas of $10^{-3}{$\mid$textrm}{cm}^2$. The traps are charged near the cathode with negative charge and charged near the anode with positive charge. The oxide charge state of traps generated by the stress high voltage contain either a positive or a negative charge.

  • In this study, we synthesized a mediator immobilized biocatalyst([FCA/GOx]/PEI/CNT) by surface modification using ferrocene carboxylic acid(FCA), and evaluated its performance as anode catalyst for biofuel cell. Through the application of FCA on glucose oxidase (GOx), the free amine groups on the lysine residue of GOx surface reacted with carboxylic acid of FCA and make amide bond between GOx and FCA. As the result of that, the electron transfer of catalyst was increased up to 1.91 times($0.468mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$) than the catalyst without surface modification (GOx/PEI/CNT), and high maxium power density of $1.79mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ was gained.
