  • Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposite particles with particle size of 275${\sim}$292 nm range were successfully prepared using emulsion polymerization. The content of montmorillonite based on the methyl methacrylate monomer was chosen as 30 wt.%. 2,2-azobis(isobuthylamidine hydrochloride) and n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as an initiator and a surfactant in cationic emulsion system. Potassium persulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate were used as an initiator and a surfactant in anionic emulsion system. The evidence of intercalated /exfoliated structure of montmorillonite in the nanocomposite prepared in our experiment was confirmed by wide angle x-ray diffraction patterns of $d_{001}$ plane. Thermal behavior of nanocomposite was traced using DSC and TGA. It was found that the nanocomposite particle prepared by cationic emulsion system showed intercalated structured. We also found that the nanocomposite particle obtained from anionic emulsion system resulted in the fully exfoliated structure.

  • The core-shell composite particles of inorganic/organic were polymerized by using styrene(St) as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We studied the effect of core-shell structure of silicone dioxide/styrene in the presence of an anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and polyoxyethylene alky lether sulfate (EU-S133D). We found that when $SiO_2$ core/PSt shell polymerization was prepared on the surface $SiO_2$ particle, to minimize the coagulation during the shell polymerization, the optimum conditions were at concentration of $2.56{\times}10^{-2}mole/L$ SLS. The structure of core-shell polymer was confirmed by measuring the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of core-shell polymer particles by transmission electron microscope (TEM).

  • In order to make an advanced dry-friction engineering material, wax-impregnated nylons were synthesized by anionic polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactam in the presence of apraffin wax. DNX-125S, which has lowest melting point among four different kinds of waxs investigated, showed excellent miscibiility with $\varepsilon$-carprolactam and no effect on the polymerization reaction. Five different kinds of wax-impregnated nylons from of DNW-125S content 0% to 8% were synthesized and tested. Among the samples, wax-free nylon has the highest yield and tensile strength and hardness, while the specimen with2% wax has the largest elongationi and energy absorption to break. The wax-impregnated nylon with a wax content 6% showdd the smallest friction coefficient under slow sliding speed and low load. Bus as the sliding speeds were increased to high, thespcieimen with 8% wax has better friction property.

  • Polyolefin-g-poly(t-butylstyrene) as one of the high-temperature polyolefin-based thermoplastic elastomers was synthesized by the graft-from anionic living polymerization from the styrene moieties of the linear poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene) as a soft block to form the hard end blocks, poly(t-butylstyrene). The chemistry of the anionic graft-from polymerization involved complete lithiation of the pendant styrene unit of the soft polyolefin elastomer with sec-BuLi/TMEDA followed by the subsequent graft anionic polymerization of 4-tert-butylstyrene with Mn=10,000~30,000 g/mol. The graft-from living anionic polymerization were very effective and the grafting size increased proportionally with increasing monomer concentration and the reaction times. The synthetic methodology for the multi-hydroxyl chain-end modified polyolefin-g-poly(t-butylstyrene) was proposed by using the thiol-ene click reaction between 2-mercaptoethanol and the polyolefin-g-[poly(t-butylstyrene)-b-high vinyl polyisoprene], which was obtained from the subsequent living block copolymerization using polyolefin-g-Poly(t-butylstyrene) with isoprene. The result indicated that this process produced a new well-defined functionalized graft-type polyolefin-based TPE with high $T_g$ hard block(> $145^{\circ}C$).

  • The water-soluble conjugated polymer with fluorescence quenching as a result of electrostatic interaction and aggregation was synthesized through Suzuki polymerization. The absorption and emission of anionic polymer (a-PFP) is blue shifted as compared with cationic polymer (c-PFP) although getting same backbone, and the absolute PL quantum efficiency of a-PFP in water is over 90% due to good solubility in aqueous solution. We anticipate that the fluorescence quenching of anionic and cationic polymers, with same conjugated backbone, could be shown in aqueous solution.

  • Anionic polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone was carried out via PPBC/KOH catalysis. The effects of PPBC/KOH mole ratio, KOH concentration and temperature on polymerization have been investigated. It was observed that the highest rate of polymerization and maximum conversion were obtained when PPBC/KOH mole ratio was around 0.5. The maximum conversion and the highest viscosity were obtained when the concentration of KOH was 2 mole percent. It was also found that while the rate of polymerization at $50^{\circ}C$ was higher than at $30^{\circ}C$ in the initial stage of polymerization, the conversion and viscosity were decreased as polymerization time was extended. The rate constant $(k_p)$ of polymerization was determined by least square method; the values of $k_p$ obtained were $22.4\;l/mole{\cdot}hr\;at\;30^{\circ}C\;and\;191.9\;l/mole{\cdot}hr\;at\;50^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The synthesis of pyrrolidone-N-sulfonyl chloride has been carried out by the reaction of pyrrolidone with sulfuryl chloride in benzene. It was attempted to study the catalytic effect of pyrroldone-N-sulfonyl chloride as an initiator for anionic polymerization of pyrrolidone. It was found that as a concentration of initiator decreased, inherent viscosity of the resulting polymer increased up to 1.8 dl/g. The highest rate of polymerization and equilibrium conversion was observed when mole ratio of PNSC to KOH was 0.25. In general, the observed value of polymerization and equilibrium conversion in circumstances using PNSC/KOH catalysis system were higher than using $CO_2$/KOH catalysis system.

  • The synthesis of well-defined dendrons based on aliphatic polyether dendritic cores and glassy polystyrene peripheries is described. The synthetic route involves a combination of living anionic polymerization and a stepwise convergent method consisting of iterative Williamson etherification and hydroboration/oxidation reactions. On the basis of molecular weight, as characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), the first generation dendron (Generation-1) shows a random coil conformation like a linear polystyrene, while higher generations (Generation-2 and 3) reveal globular forms in solution.
