  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the major volatile organic compounds generated during extrusion work with nylon 66 resin and evaluate causes of discomfort among extrusion workers. Methods: A thermal decomposition experiment using nylon 66 resin collected at a worksite was conducted in the laboratory. Based on hazards identified through the thermal decomposition experiment, the exposure levels of the workers were evaluated. Results: The major decomposition products were formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, aniline, cyclopentanone and diphenyl amine. These materials were identical to those sampled in the extrusion booth. The sources of the annoying smells, about which the workers had complained, were formaldehyde, aniline, diphenyl amine, and other hazards in the vapor and fine particles produced by the extrusion work. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and aniline were detected from air samples among workers involved in extrusion work. However, the concentration levels were much lower than Korean occupational exposure limits. The average concentration levels of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and aniline were 0.0120 ppm, 0.0036 ppm and 0.0006 ppm, respectively. Conclusions: The extrusion process at around $300^{\circ}C$ thermally decomposes the nylon 66 resin, emitting formaldehyde, aniline, and other hazards, which might have made workers uncomfortable due to their smells. The workers exposure levels to volatile organic compounds were far lower than Korean occupational exposure limits. However, since formaldehyde is a human carcinogen and acetaldehyde and aniline are also confirmed animal carcinogens, it is recommended that exposure levels should be maintained at a minimum level.

  • This work carried out the removal of aniline by wet oxidation in aqueous solutions like a industrial wastewater using Ozone, UV, and Ozone-UV . The main features of this experiment are as follows: the aniline was decomposed by OH and HO$_{2}$ radicals which produced from the reaction of water with UV and Ozone, when the Ozorie and Ozone-UV used the aniline was decomposed completely. The decomposition of aniline was very fast reaction and the reaction times were within 10min. and 20min. in case of for Ozone Ozone-UV respectively. Assumed simplified reaction mechanism from the aniline oxidation model, and the we are calculated the theoretical reaction rate constants by computer simulation, and then compared with experimental data. We suggest that this simulation program is applicable to estimate of the aniline decaying concentration and removal efficiency of aniline - contaminated wastewater.

  • In this study, the applicability of reduction-oxidation-linked treatment was evaluated for nitrobenzene and a by-product by analyzing the reaction kinetics. Nitrobenzene showed very low reactivity to persulfate that was activated using various methods. Nitrobenzene effectively reacted through the reduction process using Zero-Valent Iron (ZVI). However, aniline, a toxic substance, was produced as a by-product. Reduction-oxidation-linked treatment is a method that can allow the oxidative degradation of aniline after reducing nitrobenzene to aniline. The experimental results show improved reactivity and complete decomposition of the by-product. Improved reactivity and decomposition of the by-product were observed even under conditions in which the reduction-oxidation reaction was induced simultaneously. No activator was injected for persulfate activation in the process of reducing oxidant linkage, and the activation reaction was induced by ferrous iron eluted from the ZVI. This indicates that this method can be implemented relatively simply.

  • We prepared the cylindrical $\gamma-alumina$ pellets of 5 mm in diameter and 10 mm in average length using amorphous alumina and pore generating agent. The pellets were immersed in an aqueous solution of the mixture of $Fe(NO_{3})_{3}{\cdot}9H_{2}O$ and $CH_{3}COOH$. They were then hydrothermally treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in autoclave, dried and calcined. For the application as an environmental catalyst, we investigated the decomposition characteristics of aniline and the initiation characteristics of $OH^{\cdot}$ conversion action in $O_{3}$ environment with or without the $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ supported y-alumina catalyst and $O_{3}$ molecule.

  • A $ZnO/TiO_2$ photocatalyst decorated with PbS quantum dots (QDs) was synthesized to achieve high photocatalytic efficiency for the decomposition of dye in aqueous media. A $TiO_2$ porous layer, as a precursor photocatalyst, was fabricated using micro-arc oxidation, and exhibited irregular porous cells with anatase and rutile crystalline structures. Then, a ZnO-deposited $TiO_2$ catalyst was fabricated using a zinc acetate solution, and PbS QDs were uniformly deposited on the surface of the $ZnO/TiO_2$ photocatalyst using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. For the PbS $QDs/ZnO/TiO_2$ photocatalyst, ZnO and PbS nanoparticles are uniformly precipitated on the $TiO_2$ surface. However, the diameters of the PbS particles were very fine, and their shape and distribution were relatively more homogeneous compared to the ZnO particles on the $TiO_2$ surface. The PbS QDs on the $TiO_2$ surface can induce changes in band gap energy due to the quantum confinement effect. The effective band gap of the PbS QDs was calculated to be 1.43 eV. To evaluate their photocatalytic properties, Aniline blue decomposition tests were performed. The presence of ZnO and PbS nanoparticles on the $TiO_2$ catalysts enhanced photoactivity by improving the absorption of visible light. The PbS $QDs/ZnO/TiO_2$ heterojunction photocatalyst showed a higher Aniline blue decomposition rate and photocatalytic activity, due to the quantum size effect of the PbS nanoparticles, and the more efficient transport of charge carriers.

  • In the present study, $TiO_2$ imbedded composite powders have been successfully prepared from the (Cu. Zn)/$TiO_2$ composite salt solution. The composite (Cu, Zn)/$TiO_2$ powders were formed by drying the solution at 200~$600^{\circ}C$ in the hydrogen atmosphere. Photocatalytic characteristics was evaluated by detecting the decomposition ratio of aniline blue with UV-visible spectrophotometer(Shimazu Co., UV-1601). Phase analysis of (Cu, Zn)/$TiO_2$ composite powders was carried out by XRD and DSC, and powder size was measured with TEM. The mean particle size of composite powders was about 100mm. As the reduction temperature increases, a few zinc sulfide and oxide phases was formed and copper oxide phase was reduced. The decomposition ratio of aniline blue was about 80% under the UV irradiation by the TiO$_2$ phase in the composite (Cu, Zn)/$TiO_2$ powders and similar decomposition ratio of 80% was obtained at the UV lightless condition by virtue of Cu and Zn compounds.

  • The titania nanotubular layer for photocatalytic application was synthesized by anodization process in HF solution and the photocatalytic efficiencies of nanotubular film were evaluated by the decomposition rate of aniline blue. In order to facilitate the photocatalytic reaction, the electron acceptors such as potassium bromate, hydrogen peroxide and ammonium persulfate were added to aniline blue solution and the effects of electron acceptors on the dye degradation efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency has markedly improved by adding the electron acceptors.

  • Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-g-poly (aniline-co-2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid) (DABSA) reinforced Nafion$^{(R)}$ nanocomposite membranes were prepared and characterized for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The nanocomposite membranes with approximately $90{\mu}m$ thickness were prepared by the water assisted solution casting method. To evaluate the properties of nanocomposite membranes for DMFC applications, the nanocomposite membranes were characterized by methanol and water uptake, thermal stability, and ion exchange capacity (IEC). Furthermore, oxidative stability measurements in terms of the hydrogen peroxide decomposition rate that represent the oxidative stability of the membranes were examined. The methanol uptake values of the nanocomposite membranes were dramatically decreased compared to the cast Nafion$^{(R)}$ membranes. The IEC values of the nanocomposite membranes were increased about 30% compared to the cast Nafion$^{(R)}$ membrane.

  • The stability of liquid ferrate(VI) produced by an innovative method was confirmed and the degradation characteristics of cyclic compounds(Benzene, Aniline, Toluene, 1,4-Dioxane) by liquid ferrate(VI) were investigated under the same reaction conditions. When it was compared with the ferrate manufactured by the wet oxidation method, the liquid ferrate was more stable. And the stability of liquid ferrate was tested at the storage temperature. As a result, only 17.7% of liquid ferrate(VI) has decomposed at the storage temperature($4^{\circ}C$) for 28 days. Among the cyclic compounds, the aniline was rapidly degraded compare to other cyclic compounds, which seems to be due to the electron-donating ability of the substituent, $-NH_2$ group. Especially, when 1,4-dioxane was compared with benzene, the decomposition rate of 1,4-dioxane was lower than that of benzene, suggesting that oxygen atoms hinder the electrophilic reaction. Among 4 cyclic compounds, it was observed that aniline has the highest rate constant than those of other cyclic compounds.
