  • The authors have assembled a sample of 80 W UMa binary systems (42 W-subtype and 38 A-subtype) whose light curves have all been solved by means of the recent W-D code and combined with up-to-date radial velocity solutions. The absolute parameters (masses, radii and luminosities) have been derived (without any constraint on the physical parameters). The main results of this paper are: (1) the mass-luminosity relations for both W&A-subtypes. as well as for all W UMa contact binaries have been shown, (2) the mass-radius relations have been found for both subtypes, (3) some remarks on the evolution status have been presented.

  • The formation mechanism of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies remains an open fundamental question. Black holes (BHs) are believed to grow by accretion of gas or by merging with other BHs. Motivated by the observation of luminous quasar around redshift z ~ 7 with SMBH mass up to 109 solar mass, we follow the growth of the early assembly of SMBHs that trace the hierarchical evolution of dark matter halos derived from large cosmological simulations. The initial masses of BH seeds in the first halos were set up according to the BH mass - halo mass relation. We assume that mergers of host galaxies cause loss of angular momentum of gas and trigger episodes of gas accretion onto BHs for available durations and at the end of each episode of accretion, BHs merge immediately. We trace the evolution of BH masses for various scenarios for central gas properties in halos. We estimate the BH to halo mass ratio and BH mass function at each redshift.

  • We perform a set of N-body/SPH simulations of galaxy interactions between early- and late-type galaxies with the mass ratio of 2 to 1. We show that mass transfer during a fly by interaction (the closest approach distance ~50kpc) can cause the morphology transformation of an early-type galaxy to a late type. In our simulations, we vary the orbital parameters of the interactions and the cold gas fraction of the late-type galaxy to compare how the morphology transformation is affected by the amount of mass transfer and orbital angular momentum of cold gas accreted to the early type. We also include hot halo gas in the galaxy models and show the location of the tidal bridge can be influenced by the shock generated during the collision.

  • The variable demand on the energy market requires a great flexibility in operating hydro turbines. However, Francis turbine operated at off-design conditions poses technical challenges related to large unsteady forces given by residual swirl and angular momentum. In order to improve the performance of a Francis turbine, the paper presents a numerical investigation of the 3D flow in the turbine at off-design conditions and discusses the influence of variable guide vane openings on the internal flow of a Francis turbine with the help of computational fluid dynamics. First, the internal flow characteristics of Francis turbine operated by varied guide vane angle at off design condition are computed and the optimal guide vane angle is obtained. Secondly, the Francis turbine is operated with guide vane number varies at the optimal guide vane angle. Finally, pressure contours and velocity distributions in the distributor are discussed and compared.

  • A cat is able to quickly recover balance from unstable posture. To observe the balance recovery procedure of the cat, an impulse is applied to the cat while walking on a narrow bridge. We find that it rotates its tail toward the falling direction. In our previous research, the balance recovery procedure is analyzed based on the law of the angular momentum conservation and then a key equation is derived to maintain the balance. However, it did not consider the gravity, so the performance is not good. In this paper, a new dynamic model is proposed using the Lagrangian mechanics. In the method, the gravity is included in the potential energy. Through the proposed dynamic model, controlling the balance of a walking robot is possible.

  • In a plasma etching system, ions become an important parameter in determining the wafer topography which depends on both the physical sputtering mechanism and the chemically enhanced reaction. this paper reports the energy and angular distributions of ions across the plasma sheath using a monte carlo method. The ion distribution is mainly affected by the magnitude of the sheath voltage and by the collision in the sheath. Furthemore, the local potential distribution in a plamsa sheath has been determined by solving the poisson's equation. In th is work, ionic collisions were cosidered in terms of both charge exchange and momentum transfer. The three-dimensional distributions of ions were calculated with varying the input process conditions in the plasma reactor.

  • We have studied magnetic structure and magnetic anisotropy energy of cubic transition metal mono-oxide cluster FeO and MnO using OpenMX method based on density functional method. The calculation results show that the antiferromagnetic spin arrangement has the lowest energy for FeO and MnO due to the superexchange interactions. The magnetic anisotropy is only found for antiferromagnetically ordered FeO cluster, since occupied electron of 3d down-spin level induces the spin-orbit couplings with <111> directed angular momentum.

  • In the present paper, we theoretically analyze the flow of magnetic fluids in a circular pipe with a vertical magnetic field and investigate the magnetic response by the external magnetic field. Theoretical study through the governing equation derived by Siliomis is carried out with numerical analysis by the Gauss Elimination Method. Using polar and magnetic effect parameters, theoretical equations and distributions for the velocity, vorticity, internal angular momentum and induced magnetization as the magnetic response are shown. Especially, in the region of strong magnetic field the specific property is appeared by finding a critical magnetic effect parameter for a polar effect parameter.

  • Interacting galaxy pairs are important for study of galaxy evolution. We selected 8,542 interacting galaxy pairs out of 593,514 KIAS-VAGC galaxy sample with 0.02 < z < 0.047 and r_mag <17.6. We then classified by their interacting features into 6 types by visual inspection. We focused on two types whose spiral tidal features extend to the center of early type galaxy (ETG) or to the edge of ETG. We compared galactic parameters of these two types with those of entire 8,542 pairs as well as between the two types. Preliminary result shows both types are very close pairs (projected distance ~ 20 kpc). Spiral galaxies in the center type are more massive but less bright than those in edge type. ETGs in the edge type are brighter but not more massive than those in the center type. The center type has a mass ratio 3.4 times greater than the edge type, but the edge type has a higher angular momentum than the center type.
