  • Intake E-CVVT noise, generally caused by collision sound of roller and cage clearance at idle and driving condition, is considerable source of annoyance in passenger cars using the gasoline engine. Main source of this noise is the cam torque variation of an intake E-CVVT system, and can be controlled by clearance decrease such as backlash reduction, but which may increase the manufacturing cost. Thus in this paper, most effective solution for low noise intake E-CVVT was achieved through not only reduction of backlash and cam angular acceleration but also improvement of vehicle transfer system, which is optimal configuration through acoustic sensitivity optimization of engine mount support bracket.

  • Different patterns of dynamic trunk performance between normal subjects and low-back pain (LBP) patients have been investigated. Ten healthy subjects and ten LBP patients were recruited for this study. An experiment was designed to quantify the dynamic motion of the back and hip during repetitive flexion/extension of the trunk. The angular velocity, angular acceleration and the phase angle difference between the hip and back were recorded as dependent measures via electro- mechanical devices. Results showed the significant differences in the velocity and acceleration of the hip and back and the phase angle between normal subjects and LBP patients. The consistency of kinematic variables during motion cycles was also examined in terms of variance ratio (Hershler and Milner, 1978). Based on the results of the study, these quantifiable variables such as trunk kinematics and hip-spine coordination can be developed as a medical tool to identify LBP patients in addition to current imaging techniques.

  • The streaming rays(SR) method is improved and extended to multigroup, anisotropic scattering, and three-dimensional angular space(x-y-z(infinite))problems. This method is applied to the shielding problems in which the ray effect occurs seriously. For verification, the results of MORSE-CG code are used as reference solution and the results of TWODANT code are compared. The results show that solutions of the SR method are much better than those of the TWODANT code and are in good agreement with those of the MORSE-CG code. Also, to reduce computing time, two acceleration algorithms are implemented in the SR method : the standard coarse-mesh rebalance and a new angular two-grid acceleration.

  • A gyroscope is a rotating body possessing one axis of symmetry and whose rotation about the symmetry axis is relatively large compared with the rotation about any other axis. Tuning fork is this type of structure that various modem gyro-sensors are based on. In this paper, dynamic behavior of a cantilevered beam subjected ta a base rotation with respect to the eccentric axis that is parallel to the beam axis is analyzed. The final equations of motion in terms of generalized coordinates can be solved with numerical scheme with various values of angular velocities and angular accelerations of the rotating axis. In contrast to the case of rotating cantilever beam like helicopter blade, the rotational motion with respect to the beam axis has effect to decrease the stiffness of the beam and has unstable region depending on the magnitude of the rotational angular velocity and angular acceleration.

  • The dynamic behavior of an automatic ball balancer (ABB) is studied considering the effects of gravity and angular velocity profiles. In this study, a physical model for an ABB installed on the Jeffcott rotor is adopted in order to investigate the effects of gravity and angular acceleration. The equations of motion for the rotor with ABB are derived by using Lagrange's equation. Based on derived equations, dynamic responses for the rotor are computed by using the generalized-o method. From the computed responses, the effects of gravity and angular velocity profiles on the dynamic behavior are investigated. It is found that the balancing of the rotor with ABB can be achieved regardless of gravity. It Is also shown that a smooth velocity profile yields relatively smaller vibration amplitude than a non-smooth velocity profile.
