  • In this study, presintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the effects of the tool material, cutting condition and tool geometry on machinability. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (a)The wear of tungsten carbide tool becomes smaller with the increase of the feed and clearance angle, and with the decrease of rake angle, especially exhibiting considerably smaller wear with both the decrease of rake angle and the increase of clearance angle. (b) So far as turning the ceramic presintered at low temperature, the diamond tool shows the best performance with higher feed. (c) The effect on the tool wear of the feed, clearance angle and rake angle becomes smaller in turning the ceramic presintered at higher temperature. (d) The tool wear is not severely affected by the depth of cut.

  • An analysis refinement of the Messina Strait suspension bridge project has been recently required, concerning mainly the yaw angle effects on the multi-box deck section aerodynamics and the vortex shedding at low reduced velocities $V^*$. In particular the possible interaction of the axial flow with the large cross beams has been investigated. An original test rig has been designed at this purpose allowing for both forced motion and free motion aero elastic tests, varying the average angle of attack ${\alpha}$ and the deck yaw angle ${\beta}$. The hydraulic driven test rig allowed for both dynamic and stationary tests so that both the stationary coefficients and the flutter derivatives have been evaluated for each yaw angle. Specific free motion tests, taking advantage from the aeroelastic features of the section model, allowed also the study of the vortex shedding induced phenomena.

  • In this study, the performance of an impeller according to blade length and pitch angle was studied experimentally by building a variable pitch impeller while changing blade length to review the effect of blade length and pitch angle on a fan's performance. The pitch angle was changed in six steps from $20^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$ at intervals of $5^{\circ}$ while the blade lengths were changed to 90 mm, 100 mm, 110 mm and 120 mm with an identical airfoil shape while carrying out the experiment. The results are summarized as follows : The air flow per static pressure of axial fans increased linearly with increase of pitch angle, but the high static pressure showed a decrease at a pitch angle of $35^{\circ}$. The shaft power increased proportionally to the pitch angle at all blade lengths; the larger the pitch angle, the larger the measured increase of shaft power. This is because the drag at the fan's front increases with the pitch angle. In the axial fans considered in this research, the flow and incre.

  • Oblique angle deposition (OAD) is a physical vapor deposition where incident vapor flux arrives at non-normal angles. It has been known that tilting the substrate changes the properties of the film, which is thought to be a result of morphological change of the film. In this study, OAD has been applied to prepare single and multilayer TiN films by cathodic arc deposition. TiN films have been deposited on cold-rolled steel sheets and stainless steel sheet. The deposition angle as well as substrate temperature and substrate bias was changed to investigate their effects on the properties of TiN films. TiN films were analyzed by color difference meter, scanning electron microscopy, nanoindenter and x-ray diffraction. The color of TiN films was not much changed according to the deposition conditions. The slanted and zigzag structures were observed from the single and multilayer films. The relation between substrate tilting angle (${\alpha}$) and the growth column angle (${\beta}$) followed the equation of $tan{\alpha}=2tan{\beta}$. The indentation hardness of TiN films deposited by OAD was low compared with the ones prepared at normal angle. However, it has been found that $H^3/E^2$ ratio of 3-layer TiN films prepared at OAD condition was a little higher than the ones prepared at normal angle, which can confirm the robustness of prepared films.

  • Purpose: To assess the angle between mandibular canal and occlusal plane at each posterior tooth region and location of mental foramen on the panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: This study analysed 46 half-mandibles of panoramic radiographs. Inferior border of mandibular canal was traced. Occlusal plane was drawn from lingual cusp tip of the first premolar to distolingual cusp tip of the second molar. Perpendicular line from occlusal plane was drawn at each tooth region and then tangential lines were drawn from the crossing points at canal. the angle between occlusal plane and tangential line was measured. The location of mental foramen was also studied. According to the location of mental foramen, radiographs were divided into M (mesial) group and D (distal) group on the basis of the second premolar. and then inter-group analysis about mandibular canal angle was done. Results: The angles of mandibular canals were -17.7$^{\circ}$, -9.5$^{\circ}$, 8.2$^{\circ}$, 22.3$^{\circ}$, and 39.2$^{\circ}$at first premolar, second premolar, first molar, second molar, and third molar, respectively. The commonest position of the mental foramen was distal to the second premolar. Inter-group comparison showed statistically significant difference at the second premolar and the first molar(p<0.001). Conclusion: The knowledge of mandibular canal angle and location of mental foramen can help understanding the course of mandibular canal. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2009; 39: 89-92)

  • Objectives This study was designed to compare curvature and intervertebral disc angle of the cervical spine in different prone positions. Methods 30 adults aged 19~60 years were enrolled in this study. Volunteers in this uncontrolled trial were taken an x-ray of cervical spine on lateral. Four radiographs were taken for each volunteer, in standing, prone position with U-type pillow (prone position A), rectangular pillow (prone position B), and prone position without pillow (prone position C). After measuring the cervical angle, Ishihara index, craniovertebral angle, intervertebral angle, we analysed the lordotic angle and foward head posture. The data was anlysed by analysis of variance and pearson correlation coefficient. Results Cervical angles of prone position without pillow (prone position C) significantly decreased compared with those in standing position (p<0.001). Ishihara index of prone position without pillow (prone position C) also significantly decreased compared with those in standing position (p<0.001). Craniovertebral angle of prone position with pillow (prone position A, B) significantly increased with those in standing position (p<0.001). Intervertebral angle of prone position with pillow (prone position A, B) at the C3-7 levels significantly increased with those in standing position (p<0.001). Intervertebral angle of prone position without pillow (prone position C) at the C3-5 levels significantly decreased with those in standing position (p<0.001). The angle of intervertebral disc significntly decreased in kyphotic cervical levels. Conclusions Different prone position clearly resulted changes in cervical spine curvature and intervertebral disc angle. And it is related to cervical spine lordotic angle and sagittal alignment in standing position and prone position.

  • Since the spine radiography were explained differently at every several hospitals and textbooks. the technique has not been accurately defined and interfered each other. We would like to define the most appropriate positioning for clinical cases, and reference books, by comparing scoliotic angle and lordotic angle. From Mar 2009 to Sep 2011, 85 patient cases were studied, who had not been undergone surgical treatment among spondylopathy patients. Scoliotic angle and lordotic angle were measured, using Cobb's method. We analyzed statistically using t-test(SPSS 18), and evaluated spine general radiography position. Moreover, we researched on the actual condition at 10 university hospitals in Seoul. The results of scoliotic angle measurement, the value at erect position showed 20.98% higher than supine position, and it has statistical significance (p<.01). In lordotic angle measurement, the value at neutral holding position represented 29.3% higher than supine position, and it also has statistical significance(p<.01). The results of clinical survey, supine posine(70.0%) took much higher possession than erect position(30.0%). In conclusion, compare to supine position, erect position shows increased scoliotic and lordotic angle. It was agreed with the importance of clinical erect position radiography, which gravity affects. So clinical radiologist must recognize the difference, and conduct an accurate study.
