Numerical Study on a Sliding Bubble During Nucleate Boiling

  • A numerical method for simulating bubble motion during nucleate boiling is presented. The vapor-liquid interface is captured by a level set method which can easily handle breaking and merging of the interface and can calculate an interfacial curvature more accurately than the VOF method using a step function. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall as well as to achieve mass conservation during the whole calculation procedure. Also, a simplified model to predict the heat flux in a thin liquid microlayer is developed. The method is applied for simulation of a sliding bubble on a vertical surface to further understand the physics of partial boiling. Based on the computed results, the effects of contact angle, wall superheat and phase change on a sliding bubble are quantified.

  • For numerical analysis of the plate heat exchanger, a lot of time are required in modeling work and calculation. Whereas, this paper was purposed to identify characteristic of the plate heat exchanger through simplification of modeling by interpreting the numerical analysis proximity with the actual model. This study was also examined temperature difference between inlet side and outlet side, inner pressure drop, heat transfer area of plate and change of heat transfer coefficient on the plate depending on the inner corrugation angle and corrugation pitch of a herring bon pattern of the plate heat exchanger among chevron types of the plate exchanger.

  • In all Rapid Prototyping (RP) processes, a CAD solid model is sliced ito thin layers of uniform, but not necessarily constant, thickness in the building direction. Each cross-sectional layer is successively deposited and, at the same tim, bonded onto the previous layer; the stacked layers form a physical part of the model. The objective of this study is to develop a methode for calculating the rotational angle(θ/sub x/, θ/sub y/) of the linear hotwire cutting system in the three-dimensional space for the Variable Lamination Manufacturing process using expandable polystyrene foam sheet (VLM-S). In order to examine the applicability of the developed method to VLM-S, various three-dimensional shapes, such s a screw, an extruded cross, and a figure of Sonokong, were made using the data obtaiend from the method.

  • This paper represent improved On-line Turn off Angle control schemes for switched reluctance motors based on current control. For the purpose of the finding optimal commutation switching angle point, it is utilized him on and turn off position calculation with inductance vs. current vs. flux linkage analysis method. The goal of proposed paper is the maximization of the energy conversion per stroke and maximizing efficiency and obtaining approximately flat-topped current waveform. The proposed control scheme is demonstrated on a prototype experimental system.

A Defect Free Bistable C1 SSFLC Devices

  • Recent progress in both low pretilt and high pretilt defect free C1 surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is reviewed. First, by numerical calculation to investigate the balance between surface azimuthal anchoring energy and bulk elastic energy within the confined chevron layer geometry of C1 and C2, it is possible to achieve a zigzag free C1 state by low azimuthal anchoring alignment with a low pretilt angle. The critical azimuthal anchoring coefficient for defect free C1 state is calculated. Its relationship with elastic constant, chevron angle as well as surface topography effect are also discussed. Second, using $5^{\circ}$ oblique SiO deposition alignment method a defect free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable C1 SSFLC display, which has potential for electronic paper applications has also been developed. The electrooptical properties and bistability of this device have been investigated. Various aspects of defect control are also discussed.

영해용선박의 선수형상 설계추정에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Prediction of the Bow Form Design for Icebreakers)

  • The analysis and investigation are described for White's[2] equations compared to the equations of Runeburg[3] and Milano[5] for continuous icebreaking mode, Tunik[8-1] and Ghoneim[8-2] for ramming icebreaking mode. Calculation results compare reasonably well with published model-scale and full-scale icebreaker data by Baker[1] and Dick[11]. During continuous and ramming mode operation, using characteristics of an incebreaker, down ward force on ice and standard ice thickness broken are predicted. Additionally draft, trim and extraction difficulty are also predicted. The bow part line of an icebreakin $g^{ply}$ vessel is designed aiming to maximize the ice breaking capabiltiy as following conditions-low bow angle[20 degrees] at designed waterline, small spread angle complement [6 degrees] at designed waterline, small spread angle complement [6 degrees] and high propeller thrust [220tons]. with plow, two reamers and wave type bumper.

  • The theory of cascade flow analysis for large deflection was suggested lately, but this as-sumed to be incompressible and inviscid, the blades of negligible thickness. In this study, the fluid is assumed to be compressible and inviscide, the blades of given thickness, and using the mean vorticity pannel method the effects of increasing camber angle are analyzed. As the result of this study, it is found that the calculated flow regimes have good agreement with the existing experimented data and other calculation results.

강하각 유지를 위한 강하율 산정 연구 (A Study on the Calculation of the FPM for the Descent Angle)

  • When landing an aircraft descent-speed, wind around the airport, and regulations are important indicators for the pilot to decide whether to land in the Final Approach. In this study, in order to maintain a decent angle accessible to the airport, the pilot predicts an appropriate decent rate suitable for wind direction, wind speed, and speed to make a stable landing. To confirm this, the decent rate according to the speed and speed of wind was calculated using the information actually measured on the B737NG aircraft and compared with the theoretical figures. The purpose of this study is to ensure that the pilot can make a stable landing at a given FPM (Feet Per Minute) when a visual approach and non-normal approach is required at an airport designed with a somewhat higher descent angle.

엔진 실린더내 난류유동 측정과 정량화방법에 관한 연구 (A study on the measurement and characterization of tubulent flow inside an engine cylinder)

  • The engine combustion is one of the most important process affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design, because the flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence in a gasoline engine. This paper describes the measurement and characterization of mean velocity and turbulence intensity inside the cylinder of a 4-valve gasoline engine using laser Doppler velocimeter(LDV) under motoring(non-firing) conditions. Since the measured LDV data in each cycle show small cycle variation during compression stroke in the tested engine, the mean velocity and turbulence intensity are calculated by ensemble averaging method neglecting cycle variation effects. In the ensemble averaging method, the effects of the calculation window, in which velocities are assumed as the same crank angle, on mean velocity and turbulence intensity are fully investigated. In addition, the effects of measuring point on the flow characteristics are studied. With large calculation window, the mean velocity is shown to be less sensitive with respect to crank angle and turbulence intensity decrease in its absolute amplitude. When the piston approch to the top dead center of compression, the turbulence intensity is found to be homogeneous in the cylinder.
