Many hydrothermal skarn-type iron ore deposits inchiding Mulgeum, Yangseong, Maeri and Kimhae mines are distributed in the south-eastern Gyeongnam Province, Korea. The deposits are magnetite veins which occurred in propylitized andesitic rock near the contact with late Cretaceous Masanite. Symmetrical zoned skarns are commonly developed around the magnetite veins. The order of the skarn zones from the vein is garnet-quartz skarn, epidote skarn, and epidote-orthoclase skarn. The garnets include isotropic or anisotropic andradite($Ad_{100{\sim}70}$), and the epidotes are composed of pistacite($Ps_{21-31}$). Fe contents of the epidotes generally increase toward the magnetite veins. Epidotes and garnets often show compositional variations from grain to grain, that is, their Fe and Al contents vary inversely. This suggests that the variations depend mainly upon $fo_2$ during the skarnization. Oxygen and carbon isotope analyses of minerals from andesitic rock, micrographic granite, major skarn zones and post-mineralization zones were conducted to provide the information on the formation temperature, the origin and the evolution of the hydrothermal solution forming the iron ore deposits. Becoming more distant from the ore vein, temperatures of skarn zones represent the decreasing tendency, but most ${\delta}O^{18}$ and ${\delta}O^{18}_{H_2O}$ values of skarn minerals represent no variation trend, and also the values are relatively low. Judging from all the isotopic data from the ore deposits, the major source of hydrothemal solution altering the skarn zones and precipitating the ore bodies was magmatic water derived from the more deeply seated micrographic granite. This high temperature hydrothermal solution rising through the fissures of propylitized andesitic rock was mixed with some meteoric water, and the extensive isotopic exchange occurred with the propylitized andesitic rock. During this process, the temperature and ${\delta}O^{18}_{H_2O}$ value of hydrothermal solution were lowered gradually. At the stage of iron ore precipitation, because after all the alteration was already finished, the oxygen isotopic exchange with the wall rock was nearly not taken. The relatively high ${\delta}O^{18}$ and ${\delta}O^{18}_{H_2O}$, and relatively low ${\delta}C^{13}$ values of calcites of post mineralization stage, are the results of leaching of the high ${\delta}O^{18}$ chert xenolith in the andesitic rock and low ${\delta}C^{13}$ andesitic rock.
Mulgeum, Yangseong, Maeri and Kimhae iron ore deposits in Gyeongnam Province are hydrothermal skarn type magnetite ore deposits in propylitized andesitic rock near the contact with Cretaceous Masanite. Symmetrical zoned skarns are commonly developed around the magnetite veins. The skarn zones away from the vein are quartz-garnet skarn, epidote skarn and epidote-orthoclase skarn. Oxygen isotope analyses of coexisting minerals from andesitic rock, Masanite and major skarn zones, and of magnetite, hematite and quartz were conducted to provide the information on the formation temperature, the origin and the evolution of the hydrothermal solution forming the iron ore deposits. Becoming more distant from the ore vein, temperatures of skarn zones represent the decreasing tendency, but most ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}^{18}O_{H2O}$ values of skarn minerals represent no variation trend, and also the values are relatively low. Judging from all the isotopic data from the ore deposits, the major source of hydrothermal solution altering the skarn zones and precipitating the ore bodies was magmatic water derived from the deep seated Masanite. This high temperature hydrothermal solution rising through the fissures of propylitized andesitic rock was mixed with some meteoric water, and occurred the extensive isotopic exchange with the propylitized andesitic rock, and formed the skarns. During these processes, the temperature and ${\delta}^{18}O_{H2O}$ value of hydrothermal solution were lowered gradually. At the main stage of iron ore precipitation, because all the alteration was already finished, the new rising hydrothermal solution formed only the magnetite ore without oxygen isotopic exchange with the wall rock.
The stone artifacts in Bronze age from the Sinsongri sites in Seosan, Korea were studied on material characteristics and provenance presumptions. The use and rock names of the artifacts are a stone before processing, two semifinished stone arrowheads and a grinding stone plate by slates. In addition, there is semifinished stone arrowhead by andesitic rocks. The slate could be observed easily around the site, and the andesitic rock could be confirmed typical occurrences of the all kinds of rocks around the Kanwoldo and Hwangdori, Anmyun area above 10km from the site. As a result of analysis which is comparing between stone artifacts and same kinds of raw material rocks, the stone artifacts made by slates have similar lithology and geochemical characteristics however, the stone artifacts made by andesitic rocks are found a some different part of characteristics to the same kind of raw material rocks. Comparing of major, rare earth, compatible and incompatible elements about stones artifacts made by slates and by the same kinds of raw material rocks have same geochemical patterns. However stone artifacts made by andesites and the raw material rocks are confirmed some differences of geochemistry. Therefore the slate stone artifacts in Sinsongri site suggest that these are domestic-type which are made of the rocks around the site, and it was understood that the andesitic stone artifacts are foreign-type which need to get more geological survey and study about different volcanic artifacts of the site around the area.
This article carried studies of the petrographical and petrochemical characteristics on the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the area of Janggun peak and Gyemyeong peak which is located at the northeastern area of Mt. Geumjeong, Busan. The areas are composed of andesitic rock, sedimentary rock, rhyolitic rock, and intrusive hornblende, biotite granites, in ascending order. According to petrochemistry, the major elements show the calc-alkaline rock series ranged medium-K to high-K. With increasing $SiO_2$, $Al_{2}O_{3}$, $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, $TiO_2$ CaO, MgO MnO and $P_{2}O_{5}$ are decreased and $K_{2}O$ and $Na_{2}O$ are increased in the volcanic rocks. The trace element compositions show high LILE/HFSE ratios and negative anomaly of Nb, and REE patterns show enrichments in LREE and (-) anomaly values increase of Eu from the basaltic andesite to andesite facies, therefore the volcanic rocks have typical characteristics of continental margin arc calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, produced in the subduction environment. The volcanic rock show nearly the same patterns in spider and REE diagram. Fractional crystallization of the basaltic magma would have produced the calc-alkaline andesitic magma. And the rhyolitic magma seems to have been evolved from the basaltic andesitic magma with fractional crystallization of plagioclase, pyroxene, hornblende, biotite.
The volcanic rocks that make up Yeongdo island, an administrative district located on the southern coast of Busan, are composed of andesitic and rhyolitic rocks. Andesitic rock is mainly composed of volcanic breccia has a phenorysts of plagioclase and contains rock fragments. The rhyolitic rock is composed of volcanic angular rock at the base of Mt. Bongnae, and welded tuff forms the main mass of Mt. Bongnae. The fiamme structure can be easily observed with the naked eye, and the higher the altitude, the weaker the welded structure develops and the less the amount of rock fragments and crystals constituting the welded tuff. It is indicated that the magma that formed this study area is related to the tectonic environment of the continental margin related to subduction, and that it erupted after undergoing fractional cystallization at the same time with some contaminant in the continental crust. As a result of analyzing the main elements by altitude, it is believed to be the result of mixing at least 4 times or more of magma batches.
The volcanic stratigraphy and geochemistry of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the southern part of the Pusan showed that the volcanic rocks of the study area consist of alternating pyroclastic rocks and andesitic lavas, apparently constituting a thick volcanic sequence of a stratovolcano. The andesitic rocks contain augite, plagioclase, and hornblende as phenocrysts. Matrix minerals are augite, magnetite, hornblende, apatite. Mafic minerals, such as chlorite, epidote, sericite, and iron oxides occur as alteration products. Dacitic volcanic breccia and rhyolitic welded ash-flow tuff locally overlie the andesitic rocks. The rocks reported in the previous studies as andesitic breccia and andesite plot in the field of basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, dacite and rhyolite, based on their chemical compositions. The volcanic rocks of the study area belong to the calc-alkaline series, and the andesitic rocks which are predominant in the area plot to the field of orogenic andesite.
The Gwangyang gold deposits geologically consist of granitic gneiss, metatectic gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss which correspond to Jirisan gneiss complex. The formations of Gyeongsang system lies unconformably on these gneisses and are intruded by diorite, porphyritic andesite and Bulgugsa granites. Goheung districts are composed of quartz schist, andesitic rock, tuff and granite. The Gwangyang gold deposits are gold bearing fissure filling veins. The vein thickness varies from 15cm to 40cm and they consist of 7-10 layers in parallel. The Goheung copper deposits are sulphide bearing quartz veln which filled the fracture in andesitic rock and biotite granite. The contact zone of these rocks is partially altered. The mineral paragenesis of the Gwangyang and Goheung districts is pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, sericite, quartz and calcite. The variation trends of FMA and A'KF triangular diagrams and the differentiation index (norm, Q + Or + Ab) versus oxides diagrams is similar to the Gyeonsang basin igneous rocks. From the trace element analysis of 10 samples of country rocks, wall rocks and veins, the distribution of copper and lead contents display a correlative distribution pattern in relation to gold and silver. Homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions range from $200^{\circ}C$ to $270^{\circ}C$ in quartz from the Gwangyang gold vein and the size of fluid inclusion range from 0.01mm to 0.04mm. The fluid inclusions are mainly one or two phase and the filling degree of the inclusions varies from 85 to 95.
Using a field spectrometer having a spectral range of 0.4$\mu\textrm{m}$~2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ with a spectral resolution of 1nm, the researchers measured the reflectance of granite, andesitic rocks, sedimentary rocks, and pyrophyllite ore in the Ungsang area, Kyungsang Basin, South Korea. Spectral characteristics of the geological media were investigated from the analysis. The in-situ measured sites were selected in well exposed rock outcrops. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, rocks were sampled and remeasured under natural solar condition. The reflectance of field data was measurd at three sistes for granite, six sites for andesitic rock three sites for sedimentary rocks, and two sites for pyrophyllite ore. The vibrational absorption bands for pyrophyllite are detected in the spectral range of 2.0$\mu\textrm{m}$~2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$. The absorption band for granites in study area is not distinctive. The reflectance measured under normal field conditions showed strong absorption at wavelengths of 1.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ due to the effect of moisture in the atmosphere. After the bands of 1.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ were removed, Hull Quotient method was applied to characterize absorption bands. The reflectances of field data were calculated to estimate the band ratio corresponding to the Landsat TM and EOS Terra ASTER. The researchers suggest here that the TM band2, band3, band4, and band7 or ASTER band2, band3, band4, and band9 are the best combination for discriminating outcrops. The researchers tested and demonstrated using a Landsat TM image in the study area. For geologic applications, decorrelation stretch is also an effective tool to enhance the exposed rock mass in images.
On the ArcGIS 9.2 program in Gyeongsangbug-Do and Daegu areas, distribution ratios of rock types and geologic ages were obtained from the 1 : 250,000 scaled digital geologic and geomorphic maps. The obtained distribution ratios here will be used the geologic information data for industrialization and development planning of rock resources. The Gyeongsangbug-Do area consists of 86 rock types that can be divided into 10 large groups in geologic age. Their geologic distribution ratios show the decreasing in the order of Cretaceous, Precambrian, Jurassic, Quaternary, Age-unknown and Tertiary, all of which occupy the prevailing ratio of 96.30% in the area. Of which, sixteen rock types are somewhat dominant ones (64.04%). They are of Precambrian Yulri group and granite gneiss of the Yeongnam metamorphic complex and biotite gneiss of the Sobaegsan metamorphic complex, Age-unknown granite, Jurassic granite, Cretaceous Gasongdong and Dogyedong formations of the Yeongyang sub-basin, Nagdong and Chunsan formations and intermediate-basic volcanics of Euiseong sub-basin, Jinju and Jindong formations and andesite-andesitic tuff of Milyang sub-basin, and hornblende granite, and Quaternary alluvium. They show relatively narrow ranges of 2.07-6.53% in geologic distribution in exception of Jurassic granite showing 13.14%. And the rest 70 rock types appear to very narrow range between 0.01 and 1.94 %. On the other hand, twelve rock types are developed in the Daegu area. Their geologic ages appear to be classified into Cretaceous and Quaternary occupying 86.05% and 11.39%, respectively. Seven rock types take possession of 94.04% among the all rocks. The major rock types are Jinju formation of the Sindong group, Chilgog, Haman and Jindong formations of the Hayang group, andesite and andesitic tuff, hornblende granite and Quaternary alluvium. With exception of andesite and andesitic tuff of 37.40%, the types show slightly wide range of 3.25-17.39%, which apparently differ trends from that of Gyeongsangbug-Do area. And the rest of rock types have narrow ranges of 0.22-1.81% in the Daegu area.
Gold mineralization of Samjeong and Yongjang gold mines in Uichang area shows characteristics of Bonanza-type gold deposits. Ores are mainly developed along the contact parts between quartz vein and arkosic sandstone beds(Fe-rich bed) in sedimentary rock. Electrum, silver sulfide and sulfate minerals are mainly in the ores. On the other hand, gold mineralization is less developed in cherty rock and andesitic rock than arkosic sandstone. The study highlights characteristics of gold precipitation in the deposit on the basis of numerical modelling of the reactions between the assumed hydrothermal ore fluids with multicomponent heterogeneous equilibrium calculations. Aqueous species, gases and minerals, containing electrum are included in the calculations. The reaction result between hydrothermal ore fluids and arkosic sandstone show that pH increasing in the ore-forming fluid would trigger precipitation of quartz, chlorite, sericite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, electrum, actinolite and feldspar. The numerical modelling also illustrates the drastic increase of pH and desulfidation lead to precipitation of electrum. Ag/Au ratios in the ore vary with pH conditions and subsequently precipitation of silver-bearing sulfides such as acanthite and polybasite. The modelling of the reaction between andesitic rock and ore-forming fluid shows that mineral assemblages of the case are analogous to ones of the reaction between arkosic sandstone and fluid except the latter has little portion of electrum. The abovementioned modelling results suggest that gold-silver mineralization is bounded by host rocks at the study area.
