The horizontal pullout capacity of a group of two vertical strip plate anchors, placed along the same vertical plane, in a fully cohesive soil has been computed by using the lower bound finite element limit analysis. The effect of spacing between the plate anchors on the magnitude of total group failure load ($P_{uT}$) has been evaluated. An increase of soil cohesion with depth has also been incorporated in the analysis. For a weightless medium, the total pullout resistance of the group becomes maximum corresponding to a certain optimum spacing between the anchor plates which has been found to vary generally between 0.5B and B; where B is the width of the anchor plate. As compared to a single plate anchor, the increase in the pullout resistance for a group of two anchors becomes greater at a higher embedment ratio. The effect of soil unit weight has also been analyzed. It is noted that the interference effect on the pullout resistance increases further with an increase in the unit weight of soil mass.
This paper investigates the resistance performance of drag anchors used for aqua farms installed in southwestern offshore wind farms in Korea. These anchors have been employed for a long time without any quantitative evaluation. Experimental campaigns were performed at the target site and the results were used to validate the numerical model by changing the penetration depths in the uniformly distributed seabed (i.e., flat). Based on the validated model with good agreement with the experiments (ARE 1.8 %), the resistance of the anchor with different pullout angles was thoroughly examined. It is worth noting that the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was applied to account for the large deformation of the anchor; Eulerian for the seabed and Lagrangian for the structure. The numerical results indicated that the pullout resistance is vulnerable to horizontal inclined force rather than vertical inclination, implying that the optimum performance is ideally expected to be 0-degree force applied.
In the past decade, different types of underreamed ground anchors have been developed for substructures requiring uplift resistance. This article introduces a new type of umbrella-shaped anchor. The uplift behavior of this ground anchor in clay is studied through a series of laboratory and field uplift tests. The test results show that the umbrella-shaped anchor has higher uplift capacity than conventional anchors. The failure mode of the umbrella-shaped anchor in a large embedment depth can be characterized by an arc failure surface and the dimension of the plastic zone depends on the anchor diameter. The anchor diameter and embedment depth have significant influence on the uplift behavior. A finite element model is established to simulate the pullout of the ground anchor. A parametric study using this model is conducted to study the effects of the elastic modulus, cohesion, and friction angle of soils on the load-displacement relationship of the ground anchor. It is found that the larger the elastic modulus and the shear strength parameters, the higher the uplift capacity of the ground anchor. It is suggested that in engineering design, the soil with stiffer modulus and higher shear strength should be selected as the bearing stratum of this type of anchor.
Ground anchor should not be used in soft clay, because anchor resistance can not be guaranteed. However, there is a way to increase the capacity of anchors. The pulse powered anchor is an underreamed anchor by using high voltage electrokinetic pulse energy. In this paper, conceptual introduction of the pulse powered anchor was presented. Anchor pull-out tests were performed at the Geotechnical Experimentation Site at Sungkyunkwan University in Suwon, Korea. Data were analyzed in order to verify the performance of pulse powered anchors.
An oil boom was set up in order to contain diffused oil from spills and for the retrenchment of damage caused by oil Pollution. Therefore, the oil boom anchor needed proper holding power to endure high resistance from flowing streams and to secure the oil boom around the spill, and must dredge directly into the seabed when it is dropped and block oil outflow immediately. This study investigated the holding power of the danforth anchor and the coastal fishing vessel anchor used for oil booms in the KMPRC (Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation). For each type, a 30 kg and 20 kg anchor were used. The holding power of the danforth anchors were measured by dropping both weights 10 times. However the coastal fishing vessel anchors were dropped only 5 times each, because no substantial differences were found between drops. In the results of the danforth anchors, an anchor awoke occurred in 2 drops of the 30 kg anchor and in 4 drops of the 20 kg anchor, wherein there was no holding power to be measured. With exception to the anchor awoke cases, the maximum holding power of the danforth 30 kg and 20 kg anchors was 250-520 kg and 123-233 kg, respectively. In the case of the coastal fishing vessel anchors of 30 kg and 20 kg, throughout the experiment, there was no occurrence of an anchor awoke. For the 30 kg and 20 kg anchors, the maximum holding power was measured to be 209-230 kg and 155-170 kg, respectively. Therefore, the holding power of the coastal fishing vessel anchor was shown to be much poorer than that of the danforth anchor. However, the holding power of the danforth anchor was very unstable. Due to the occurrences of anchor awoke, there was no holding power and the measurement value of maximum holding power showed too much variation among the drop tests. Also, after the maximum holding power was achieved, anchor awoke occurred easily. In the case of the coastal fishing vessel anchor was much more stabile, because there was no anchor awoke and no instance where holding power failed. Also the maximum holding power was reached quickly and almost no variation occurred among the drop tests.
Ground anchor, commonly referred to as tiebacks or tie-down, is essentially steel elements secured in the ground by cement grout. They are used to provide either lateral or vertical support for various engineered structures, and are effective in all types of soil and rock. However, ground anchor can not be used in soft clay because anchor resistance would not be guaranteed. In this paper, conceptual introduction of the Smart Anchor is presented. The Smart Anchor is a kind of friction type anchor, the load is diffused and applied to the various parts of the distributed bond length, having less impact on the grout strength, and being able to secure necessary anchoring force in relatively soft grounds. This study shows a numerical study of predicting the load transfer of The Smart Anchor in soft clay. A beam-column analysis was performed by a elastic-plastic P-y curves in soft clay.
