Background: When using the anterior approach for performing superficial parotidectomy, the first thing to do is to find the buccal branch of the facial nerve and the parotid duct. The buccal branch usually runs transversely with the parotid duct from the anterior border of the parotid gland. We wanted to check the relationship between the two structures during the operation and to get clinically helpful information. Methods: Twelve patients with parotid mass were treated with superficial parotidectomy between May 2012 and August 2012. The outline of superficial and deep lobes of the parotid gland, parotid duct, and the buccal branch of the facial nerve were drawn on the transparent film by tracing the structures intraoperatively. Results: In 7 (58.3%) of 12 cases, the buccal branch of the facial nerve was located more caudally than the parotid duct at the anterior border of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. In 3 cases (25%), the buccal branch was located more cephalically than the parotid duct. The mean distance between two structures were $2.54{\pm}1.48$ mm. In 11 cases, the parotid duct was located deeper than the buccal branch. Conclusion: The buccal branch of the facial nerve tends to be located more caudally than parotid duct and runs more superficially than parotid duct in all cases. We identified the relationship between the parotid duct and the buccal branch of the facial nerve during the operations on living subjects, not from the cadavers, so it would be a clinically helpful study which supplied more accurate anatomical information.

In order to create three-dimensional model for human body, a method that reconstructs geometric models from contour lines on cross-section images is commonly used. We can get a set of contour lines by acquiring CT or MR images and segmenting anatomical structures. Previously proposed method divides entire contour line into simply matched regions and clefts. Since long processing time is required for reconstructing cleft regions, its performance might be degraded when manipulating complex data such as cross-sections for human body. In this paper, we propose a fast reconstruction method. It generates a triangle strip with single tiling operation for simple region that does not contain branch structures. If there exist branches in contour lines, it partitions the contour line into several sub-contours by considering the number of vertices and their spatial distribution. We implemented an automatic surface reconstruction system by using our method which reconstructs three-dimensional models for anatomical structures.
Purpose: Cervicogenic headache (CGH) is pain referred to the head/ face from the structures in vicinity of upper cervical spinal nerves via trigeminocervical pathway. Ponticulus Posticus (PP) and Elongated Styloid Process (ESP) are anatomical structures that cause compression of vasculature present around upper cervical nerve plexus. Recently, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has shown to play an essential role in identification of these high-pressure zones in the brain. The aim of this research is to study the association of ESP and PP in patients with CGH and to develop a hypothesis by CFD to analyse vertebrobasilar insufficiency as a contributing factor in occurrence of CGH. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 4500 full skull CBCT scans was done for the presence of partial or complete PP and length of Styloid Process (SP). Research was divided into two phases; In first Preliminary Phase, 150 scans that showed the presence of PP and ESP were analysed, and only 134 patients gave consent to fill the questionnaire containing 96 question items pertaining to symptoms associated with CGH. In the second phase, simulation of Vertebral and Carotid Artery was done using Fluent 14.5 Software and by CFD, pressure distribution on arteries was obtained that helped to identify high pressure regions. Results: Both PP and ESP showed a statistically significant association with CGH (p<0.001). By CFD analysis, both steady and transient phases of simulation showed drop in pressure due to constriction of internal carotid and vertebral artery by ESP and PP respectively and were found to decrease the volume of blood reaching the brain, 0.12 /0.13 mL and 0.06 mL respectively. Conclusions: Our analysis proves ESP and PP as contributing factors towards CGH. Hence for proper diagnosis and management of headache disorders, clinicians should have adequate knowledge about these anatomical structures and their resulting clinical symptoms.
The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of Quercus mongolica infested by oak wilt disease. To analysis the anatomical characteristics of the wood specimens infested by the oak wilt, the anatomical structures of an infected wood, a dead wood, and sound wood were observed at 10-year-old intervals from 10 to 50 annual rings using both an optical and a scanning electron microscope. The fiber length was measured in units of 5 annual rings from the pith, and the diameter of the vessel element and the ratio of the vessel including the tyloses were measured for each 10 annual ring. In the cross section, on the infected and dead wood specimens, mycelium was also observed with the tyloses in the vessel. There was no signification difference between the wood specimens in the fiber length and the vessel diameter of the vessel element. The fiber length was not difference after 20-30 annual rings which is a part of juvenile wood. The average of the vessel ratio including tyloses in the infected wood was the highest. Especially, the ratio of tyloses was the highest 40-50 annual rings in the infected wood and the dead wood. Therefore, the large difference between the infested wood by oak wilt and the sound wood was the ratio of tyloses. This result can be used as a basic data to utilize the infested wood.
Purpose: To evaluate the tracing of optic nerve tract using manganese enhanced magnetic resonance Imaging. Materials and Methods: After injecting $30{\mu}l$ of $MnCl_2(1mol)$ (1 mol) Into the retina of female New Zealand white rabbit, the contrast enhancements at major anatomical structures of optic nerve tract were evaluated by high resolution T1-weighted Images 12 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours after $MnCl_2(1mol)$ Injection using 3D FSPGR (Fast Speiled Gradient Recalled echo) pulse sequence at 1.5T clinical MR scanner with high performance gradient system. Also, for quantitative evaluation, the signal-to-noise ratios of circular ROI on anatomical locations were measured. Results: The major structures on the optic nerve tract were enhanced after injecting $MnCl_2(1mol)$. The structures, which showed enhancement, were right optic nerve, optic chiasm, left optic tract, left lateral geniculate nucleus, left superior colliculus. The structures on the contralateral optic pathway to the right retina were enhanced whereas the structures on the ipsilateral pathway did not show enhancement. Conclusion: The Mn transport through axonal pathway of optic nerve sys)em was non- invasively observed after injecting injecting $MnCl_2$ at the retina, which is the end terminal of optic nerve system. This Mn transport seems to occur by voltage gated calcium $(Ca^{2+})$ channel and In case of direct Injection Into the retina, the fast transpori pathway of voltage gated calcium channel seems to be responsible for Mn transport.

Bones are dynamic structures, being supported by muscles, tendons, and ligaments. When some or all the structures are disturbed i.e. in fractures, the alignment of the bone in respect to the rest of the body is deranged. This gives rise to axial as well as rotational deformity in three dimensional planes. The correct alignment and position of the long bones are to be maintained to heal the bone in the best possible anatomical and functional position. The objective of this research is to address the problems in the current practice involving surgeon, assistant, fluoroscopy and crude mechanical means and to see if a robotic solution exists to solve the problems of manipulating and reducing long bone fractures. This paper presents various design aspects of the proposed surgeon-instructed, image-guided and robotic system including the system design specification, robot design and analysis, motion control and implementation, and x-ray image processing and incorporation in CAD environment.
Compound eyes in nature present intriguing topics in physiological optics due to their unique optical scheme for imaging. For example, a bee's eye has thousands of integrated photonic units called ommatidia spherically arranged along a curvilinear surface so that each unit points in a different direction. The omni-directionally arranged ommatidium collects incident light with a narrow range of angular acceptance and independently contributes to the capability of wide field-of-view (FOV) detection. Artificial implementation of compound eyes has attracted a great deal of research interest because the wide FOV exhibits a huge potential for medical, industrial, and military applications. So far, imaging with a FOV over $90^{\circ}$ has been achieved only with fisheye lenses which rely on bulky and expensive multiple lenses and require stringent alignment. In this talk, we will discuss about the spherical 3D arrangement of the photonic structures of biologically inspired artificial compound eyes in a small form-factor to have and the functional and anatomical similiarity with natural compound eyes.
Diagnosis of maxillofacial lesions is very difficult. Recent developments in computed tomography enable the production of three dimnesional images of complex anatomical structures from a series of conventional computed tomographic sections. Methods of three-dimensional analysis of computed tomographic images have recently been described. Mostly, reports have concentrated on applications relative to congenital deformities. In this report, one method of three dimensional reformatting is reviwes. Images formed by this method have solid surface appearance and can be color enhanced and manipulated to isolate anatomic structures of interest. The program allows tissue densitis, volumes, and distances. This report emphasizes maxillofacial applications other than those previously reported in the surgical and radiological literature.

This report described a case in which diagnostic radiographs showed irregular dense radiopaque strings and curved lines in the head and neck area. These artifacts could lead to misinterpretation since they may obscure anatomical structures and/or mask critical structures/pathologies. A more detailed history of the patient indicated that these strings originated from a facelift procedure in which a gold-wire technique was used. Considering that such intervention may cause a radiodiagnostic burden, it should be included in the anamnesis prior to radiography.

The anatomical structures of foot and ankle are more superficial than other body structures. The ultrasonographic examinations are easy and useful diagnostic tools in the foot and ankle field. The interpretation of ultrasonographic findings depends on the observer's experiences of sonographical anatomy. Repeated ultrasonographic examination of the foot and ankle can improved the skills in diagnosing the disease of the foot and ankle.
