  • In this paper, free and force vibration behaviors of graphene-reinforced composite functionally graded (GRC-FG) cylindrical shells in thermal environments are investigated based on Reddy's third-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The GRC-FG cylindrical shells are composed of piece-wise pattern graphene-reinforced layers which have different volume fraction. Based on the extended Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model, the effective material properties of the resulting nanocomposites are evaluated. Using the Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method, the motion equation of the GRC-FG cylindrical shells is formulated. Using the time- and frequency-domain methods, free and force vibration properties of the GRC-FG cylindrical shell are analyzed. Numerical cases are provided to study the effects of distribution of graphene, shell radius-to-thickness ratio and temperature changes on the free and force vibration responses of GRC-FG cylindrical shells.

  • This study investigated the possibility of using the recorded micro tremor data on ground level as ambient vibration input excitation data for investigation and application Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) on the bench-scale earthquake simulator (The Quanser Shake Table) for model chimney. As known OMA methods (such as EFDD, SSI and so on) are supposed to deal with the ambient responses. For this purpose, analytical and experimental modal analysis of a model chimney for dynamic characteristics was performed. 3D Finite element model of the chimney was evaluated based on the design drawing. Ambient excitation was provided by shake table from the recorded micro tremor ambient vibration data on ground level. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition is used for the output only modal identification. From this study, best correlation is found between mode shapes. Natural frequencies and analytical frequencies in average (only) 1.996% are different.

  • This work provides the analytical methods to represent the updated form of stiffness or flexibility matrices using the measurements of the first few natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes. This study derives the mathematical forms on the variance of stiffness or flexibility matrices to minimize the performance index in the satisfaction of the eigen-function including the residual force depending on the measured data. The proposed methods can be utilized in detecting damage and updating the parameter matrices deviated from the analytical parameter matrices. The validity of the proposed methods is investigated in a numerical experiment of truss structure and the numerical results of stiffness-based and flexibility-based methods are compared. The sensitivity to the external noise is also examined for applying to the practical work.

  • Grayanotoxin-contaminated honey exhibits toxicity. In this study, a reliable and sensitive liquid-chromatography-tandem-mass-spectrometric method (LC-MS/MS) was developed and validated for the quantitation of grayanotoxin I and grayanotoxin III in honey. The grayanotoxins were extracted from honey via solid phase extraction and separated on a biphenyl column with a mobile phase consisting of 0.5 % acetic acid in water and methanol. Mass spectrometric detection was performed in the multiple-reaction monitoring mode with positive electrospray ionization. The calibration curve covered the range 0.25 to 100 ㎍/g. The intra- and inter-day deviations were less than 10.6 %, and the accuracy was between 94.3 and 114.0 %. The validated method was successfully applied to the determination of grayanotoxins in mad honey from Nepal. The concentrations of grayanotoxin I and grayanotoxin III in 33 out of 60 mad honey samples were 0.75 - 64.86 ㎍/g and 0.25 - 63.99 ㎍/g, respectively. The method established herein would help in preventing and confirming grayanotoxin poisoning.

  • Displacements near crack and stress intensity factor (SIF) are key parameters to solve rock failure issue when using fracture mechanics. In order to study the horizontal displacement and stress intensity factor of the mode I fracture, a series of three-point bending tests of granite specimens with central notch were carried out. The evolution of horizontal displacements of precast notch and crack tip opening displacements (CTOD) were analyzed based on the digital image correlation (DIC) method. Stress intensity factors for three-point bending beams with arbitrary span-to-width ratios(S/W) were calculated by using the WU-Carlsson analytical weight function for edge-crack finite width plate and the analytical solution of un-cracked stress by Filon. The present study provides a high efficient and accurate method for fracture mechanics analysis of the three-point bending granite beams.

  • The free vibration analysis of fluid conveying Timoshenko pipeline with different boundary conditions using Differential Transform Method (DTM) and Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) has not been investigated by any of the studies in open literature so far. Natural frequencies, modes and critical fluid velocity of the pipelines on different supports are analyzed based on Timoshenko model by using DTM and ADM in this study. At first, the governing differential equations of motion of fluid conveying Timoshenko pipeline in free vibration are derived. Parameter for the nondimensionalized multiplication factor for the fluid velocity is incorporated into the equations of motion in order to investigate its effects on the natural frequencies. For solution, the terms are found directly from the analytical solution of the differential equation that describes the deformations of the cross-section according to Timoshenko beam theory. After the analytical solution, the efficient and easy mathematical techniques called DTM and ADM are used to solve the governing differential equations of the motion, respectively. The calculated natural frequencies of fluid conveying Timoshenko pipelines with various combinations of boundary conditions using DTM and ADM are tabulated in several tables and figures and are compared with the results of Analytical Method (ANM) where a very good agreement is observed. Finally, the critical fluid velocities are calculated for different boundary conditions and the first five mode shapes are presented in graphs.

  • Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a promising tool to measure isotope ratios of individual uranium particles in environmental samples for nuclear safeguards. However, the analysis requires prior identification of a small number of uranium particles that coexist with a large number of other particles without uranium. In the present study, this identification was performed by scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray analysis with automated particle search mode. The analytical results for an environmental sample taken at a nuclear facility indicated that the observation of backscattered electron images with × 1000 magnification was appropriate to efficiently identify uranium particles. Lower magnification (less than × 500) made it difficult to detect smaller particles of approximately 1 μm diameter. After identification, each particle was manipulated and transferred for subsequent isotope ratio analysis by SIMS. Consequently, the isotope ratios of individual uranium particles were successfully determined without any molecular ion interference. It was demonstrated that the proposed technique provides a powerful tool to measure individual particles not only for nuclear safeguards but also for environmental sciences.

  • In this study, vortex induced vibrations of a cylinder mounted on a flexible rod are analyzed. This simple configuration represents the key element of new conception bladeless wind turbine (Whitlock 2015). In this study the structure oscillations equation coupled to the wake oscillation equation for this configuration are solved using analytical perturbation method, for the first time. An analytical expression that predicts the lock-in phenomena range of wind speed is derived. The discretized equations of motion are also solved using RKF45 numerical method. The equations of motion are discretized by Galerkin method. Free vibration mode shape of the structure taking into account the discontinuity of the cross section are used as comparison function. Numerical results are compared to the analytical results, and they show a satisfying agreement. The effect of system parameters on the oscillations of structure and wake as well as on the lock-in domain are presented. Moreover, it is shown that the values of wind speed triggering the start and the stop of the lock-in phenomenon, for increasing wind speed are different from those values obtained during the reverse process, i.e., when the wind speed decreases.

  • In this paper, an improved theoretical interfacial stress and slip analysis is presented for simply supported composite steel-concrete beam bonded with an adhesive. The adherend shear deformations have been included in the present theoretical analyses by assuming a linear shear stress through the thickness of the adherends, while all existing solutions neglect this effect. Remarkable effect of shear deformations of elements has been noted in the results. It is observed that large shear is concentrated and slip at the edges of the composite steel-concrete. Comparing with some experimental results from references, analytical advantage of this improvement is possible to determine the normal and shear stress to estimate exact prediction of normal and shear stress interfacial along span between concrete and steel beam. The exact prediction of these stresses will be very important to make an accurate analysis of the mode of fracture. It is shown that both the normal and shear stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite steel-concrete beam. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behavior of the connection and design of such structures.
