  • Urbanization and waterworks construction in natural watershed have been causing higher flood risks in lowland areas. Detention basins have become one of the most efficient fundamental instruments for storm water and environmental management at watershed scale. Nowadays, there are many studies coupled numerical methods of flood routing with optimization algorithms to investigate factors that impact on the efficiency of detention basins in flood reduction in a watershed, such as detention basin location, size, and cost and watershed characteristics. Although these couplings have been become more widespread but cumbersome computation and hydraulic data requirement still are their limitations. To tackle the procedure efforts due to numerical integration and data collection, simple approach is proposed to primarily estimate effects of detention basins. The approach basis is the linear system theory applied to the solution of hydrologic flood routing. The paper introduces an analytical method for estimating detention effects deriving by recent studies and innovatively analyses this equation on fractal perspective. Then, an optimization technique is performed by applying harmony search algorithms (HSA) to optimize efficiency of detention basins at watershed scale. The location and size of upstream detention basin are simultaneously obtained. Finally, the proposed methodology, practically applied for a real watershed in Kan river, Iran.

  • This document was prepared to review and summarize the analytical methods for airborne and bulk asbestos. Basic principles, shortcomings and advantages for asbestos analytical instruments using phase contrast microscopy(PCM), polarized light microscopy(PLM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were reviewed. Both PCM and PLM are principal instrument for airborne and bulk asbestos analysis, respectively. If needed, analytical electron microscopy is employed to confirm asbestos identification. PCM is used originally for workplace airborne asbestos fiber and its application has been expanded to measure airborne fiber. Shortcoming of PCM is that it cannot differentiate true asbestos from non asbestos fiber form and its low resolution limit ($0.2{\sim}0.25{\mu}m$). The measurement of airborne asbestos fiber can be performed by EPA's Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) method, World Health Organization (WHO) method, International Standard Organization (ISO) 10312 method, Japan's Environmental Asbestos Monitoring method, and Standard method of Indoor Air Quality of Korea. The measurement of airborne asbestos fiber in workplace can be performed by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 7400 method, NIOSH 7402 method, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ID-160 method, UK's Health and Safety Executive(HSE) Methods for the determination of hazardous substances (MDHS) 39/4 method and Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) CODE-A-1-2004 method of Korea. To analyze the bulk asbestos, stereo microscope (SM) and PLM is required by EPA -600/R-93/116 method. Most bulk asbestos can be identified by SM and PLM but one limitation of PLM is that it can not see very thin fiber (i.e., < $0.25{\mu}m$). Bulk asbestos analytical methods, including EPA-600/M4-82-020, EPA-600/R-93/116, OSHA ID-191, Laboratory approval program of New York were reviewed. Also, analytical methods for asbestos in soil, dust, water were briefly discussed. Analytical electron microscope, a transmission electron microscope equipped with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive X-ray analyser(EDXA), has been known to be better to identify asbestiform than scanning electron microscope(SEM). Though there is no standard SEM procedures, SEM is known to be more suitable to analyze long, thin fiber and more cost-effective. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) imaging protocol was developed to identify asbestos fiber. Although many asbestos analytical methods are available, there is no method that can be applied to all type of samples. In order to detect asbestos with confidence, all advantages and disadvantages of each instrument and method for given sample should be considered.

  • Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid and accurate analytical method for determining the composition of agricultural products and feeds. An important merit of the NIRS analytical system is consistent predictions across instruments. However, proper calibration is the most important factor for a NIRS analytical system. Forty samples were obtained from Kyonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and used to develop calibrations for crude protein content and crude oil content. Calibrations equations were developed using multiple linear regression (MLR). Accuracy and precision of NIRS predictions were adequate for quality measurement for the two constituents in kidney bean seed. In calibration sample sets (N=30), multiple correlation coefficient between NIR and lab measurements is 0.90 for seed, 0.97 for powder in seed protein concentration and 0.40 for seed and 0.92 for powder in seed oil concentration, respectively. It is concluded that NIRS method is suitable for the determination of seed composition in whole kidney bean.

  • The identification of explosive residues on specimens obtained from an explosion event is a crucial factor for assessing the cause of the explosion. In order to detect the components of explosives, the explosive residues deposited on surfaces are commonly extracted using swabbing materials pre-wetted with an organic solvent. The residues are then analyzed with analytical instruments such as LC/MS and CE/MS. Most conventionally used swabbing media such as cotton swabs or cotton tip swabs seem unsuitable for extracting explosive residues from the surface of a large area of clothes because the swabbing materials tend to be damaged easily, and because only a relatively small amount of explosives is collected. To overcome these problems, we have introduced a novel wiper ($215{\times}210mm$, single layer, Yuhan-Kimberly, Republic of Korea) as a swabbing material to recover representative organic explosives, namely, TNT, RDX, tetryl, HMX, PETN, and NG, from a large area of clothes. Different sides of the wiper, which was folded in half five times, was used to swab the surface of a clothing. We compared this novel wiper with a cotton swab and a cotton tip swab in terms of the recovery efficiency for the aforementioned organic explosives by pre-wetting with methanol, acetone, and acetonitrile, respectively. We identified that this novel wiper collected a significantly higher amount of organic explosive residues than a cotton swab or a cotton tip swab when using methanol as an extracting solvent.

  • Background: Red ginseng polysaccharides (RGPs) have been acknowledged for their outstanding immunomodulation and anti-tumor activities. However, their studies are still limited by the complexity of their structural features, the absence of purification and enrichment methods, and the rarity of the analytical instruments that apply to the analysis of such macromolecules. Thus, this study is an attempt to establish a new mass spectrometry (MS)-based analysis procedure for RGPs. Methods: Saponin pre-excluded powder of RG (RG-SPEP, 10 mg) was treated with 200 µL of distilled water and centrifuged for 5 h at 1000 rpm and 85 ℃. Ethanol-based precipitation and centrifugation were applied to obtain RGPs from the heated extracts. Further, endo-carbohydrase treatments were performed to produce specific saccharide fragments. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) processes were implemented to purify and enrich the enzyme-treated RGPs, while matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF/TOF) MS was employed for the partial structural analysis of the obtained RGPs. Results: Utilizing cellulase, porous graphitized carbon (PGC), hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC), and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS, the neutral and acidic RGPs were qualitatively analyzed. Hexn and Hexn-18 (cellulose analogs) were determined to be novel neutral RGPs. Additionally, the [Unknown + Hexn] species were also determined as new acidic RGPs. Furthermore, HexAn (H) was determined as another form of the acidic RGPs. Conclusion: Compared to the previous methods of analysis, these unprecedented applications of HILIC-SPE and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS to analyze RGPs proved to be fairly effective for fractionating and detecting neutral and acidic components. This new procedure exhibits great potential as a specific tool for searching and determining various polysaccharides in many herbal medicines.

  • A laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurement was carried out to derive an optimized measurement condition with a high reproducibility and to grow a plasma sphere to 20 mm high under a 600 mtorr vacuum in order to improve an accuracy of measurement. The measurement of the plasma was taken at a 6.0 mm distance, in the direction of a plasma sphere, from a sample. This location belongs to the outer sphere region in the plasma. The calibration curve of 'Ni' and 'Cu' was acquired by the signal intensity ratio and the atomic ratio for the samples, and linear regression of 'Cu' was $R^2$=0.9886, and the linear regression of 'Ni' was $R^2$=0.9988. The accuracy of LIBS was improved pre-existence as the measurement error of 'Ni' was 0.78%.

  • Psychological and cognitive development in child and adolescent periods is key knowledge for understanding children and adolescents' behavior and inducing their actions. So far, psychoanalytic approaches have been primarily researched by Freud's analytical tools and Piaget's analysis on cognitive developments have been mainly employed to explore children and adolescents' psychological developments. In addition, other various theories have been suggested in order to explain children and adolescents' psychological developments. However, in reality, it is difficult to integrate diverse theoretical lens to investigate children and adolescents' psychological developments. Considering this constraint, in clinical dentistry, the conventional theoretical instruments have been still widely employed to guide children and adolescents' behavior.

  • To product the map by terrestrial photogrammetry method, a few rather nuisance stereo image acquiring processing and plot using expensive analytical instruments have to be performed. In this study, plot was made by acquiring and rectification image using simple method rather than above it. For this, geometry rectification system was constructed for the generation of single ortho-image analysis. and these ortho-images of architecture were made and analysed by appling various warping methods. As a result, the performance of single image analysis could be estimated, and it is expected that the application of this is possible to various non-topographic photogrammetry.
