  • Synchronized switch damping (SSD) techniques have recently been developed for structural vibration control using piezoelectric materials. In these techniques, piezoelectric materials are bonded on the vibrating structure and shunted by a network of electrical elements. These piezoelectric materials are switched according to the amplitude of the excitation force to damp vibration. This paper presents a new SSD technique called 'synchronized switch damping on negative capacitance and adaptive voltage sources' (SSDNCAV). The technique combines the phenomenon of capacitance transient charging and electrical resonance to effectively dampen the structural vibration. Also, the problem of stability observed in the previous SSD techniques is effectively addressed by adapting the voltage on the piezoelectric patch according to the vibration amplitude of the structure. Analytical expressions of vibration attenuation at the resonance frequency are derived, and the effectiveness of this new technique is demonstrated, for the control of a resonant cantilever beam with bonded piezoelectric patches, by comparing with SSDI, SSDVenh, and SSDNC techniques. Theoretical predictions and experimental results show the remarkable vibration damping capability of SSDNCAV technique, which was better than the previous SSD techniques. The broadband vibration control capabilities of SSDNCAV technique are also demonstrated, which exceed those of previous SSD techniques.

  • Techniques for predicting the future can be categorized into statistics-based and deep-run-based techniques. Among them, statistic-based techniques are widely used because simple and highly accurate. However, working-level officials have difficulty using many analytical techniques correctly. In this study, we compared the accuracy of prediction by applying multinomial logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, and Bayesian inference to marketing related data. The same marketing data was used, and analysis was conducted by using R. The prediction results of various techniques reflecting the data characteristics of the marketing field will be a good reference for practitioners.

  • In this study, new integrated particle tracking algorithm was developed to reduce the inherent problem of Eulerian- Lagrangian method, or adverse effect of particle tracking error on mass balance error. The new integrated particle tracking algorithm includes numerical method, semi-analytical method, and analytical method which consider both temporal and spatial changes of velocity field during time step. Detail of mathematical derivations is well illustrated and four examples are made to verify through the comparison of the new integrated particle tracking with analytical solution or Runge-Kutta method. Additionally, It was shown that the there is better superiority of the new integrated particle tracking algorithm over other existing particle tracking method such as Lu's method.

  • In this study, we investigated the analytical techniques to quantify the ambient concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S) in air at ppt concentration level. For this purpose, an on-line GC analytical system equipped with both pulsed-flame photometric detector (PFPD) and thermal desorption unit (TDU) was investigated by collecting ambient air samples. The results of our study generally indicated that calibration conditions of GC system is highly sensitive to affect the accuracy of the analytical technique. Most importantly. we found that the use of different matrices in the the preparation stage of working standards was sensitive to control the overall performance of this technique. The calibration of our analytical system was tested by the two types of working standard (prepared by mixing either with high purity $N_2$ or with the ambient air). According to this test, the latter represented more efficiently the detecting conditions of actual air samples. The peak occurrence patterns of both air samples and standards (prepared by mixing with ambient air) were altered in a similar manner as the function of the loaded volume; however, it was not the case for the $N_2$-mixed standards. Results of our study suggest that detection of H$_2$S is highly different from other sulfides and that its quantification requires minimiaing interfering effects of non -pure substance (like water vapor) and (either sorptive or destructive) loss effects.

  • Despite of the popularity of using empirical methods for support design, empirical rules suffer from the inherent problem of providing no indication of the safety degree of the design. For the support design of large span tunnel, it was considered that the empirical design guidelines should be augmented by more explicit design methods. This paper presents an overview of the analytical support design methodology that is used to refine initial empirical recommendations. The initial support design supplemented by analytical methods is validated by probabilistic and deterministic approach applied to stress-induced and structurally controlled gravity-driven instability problem each. As a result, the extent of the potential failure zone is sorted out and numerical parametric studies were performed to gain insight into the overall behavior of tunnel in the potential failure zone. Concequently, it was decided that additional conservation techniques have to be planed as a reserved support pattern.

  • An electrothermal vaporization-hollow cathode glow discharge-atomic emission spectrometer(ETV-HCGD-AES) has been developed for detecting heavy metals in human serum and urine samples. Fisrt of all, we designed a glow discharge cell for atomic emission spectrometry and its analytical performance was studied with the standard reference materials(SRMs) purchased from the NIST. Practically, the ETV-HCGD-AES demonstrated better instrumental sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Hg and Pb in the SRMs, serum and urine, than ICP-OES since the ETV-HCGD-AES was not required the complicate sample digestion procedure, which improved sample transportation efficiency.

  • Most electrical machines like motor, generator and transformer are symmetric in terms of magnetic field distribution and mechanical structure. In order to analyze these problems effectively, many coupling techniques have been introduced. This paper deals with a coupling scheme for open boundary problem of symmetric and periodic structure. It couples an analytical solution of Fourier series expansion with the standard finite element method. The analytical solution is derived for the magnetic field in the outside of the boundary, and the finite element method is for the magnetic field in the inside with source current and magnetic materials. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it retains sparsity and symmetry of system matrix like the standard FEM and it can also be easily applied to symmetric and periodic problems. Also, unknowns of finite elements at the boundary are coupled with Fourier series coefficients. The boundary conditions are used to derive a coupled system equation expressed in matrix form. The proposed algorithm is validated using a test model of a bush bar for the power supply. And the each result is compared with analytical solution respectively.

  • Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry(SIMS) is an analytical method that measures the distribution and concentration of elements or compounds by analyzing the mass of secondary ions released by irradiating ion beams with energy of hundreds eV to 20 keV on the sample surface. Unlike other similar analytical instruments, SIMS directly detect the elemental ions that constitute a sample, allowing you to accurately identify components and obtain concentration information in the depth direction. It is also a great feature for measuring isotopes and analyzing light elements, especially hydrogen. In particular, with the development of materials science, there is an increasing demand for trace concentration analysis and isotope measurements in the micro-regions of various materials. SIMS has a short history compared to other similar methods; nevertheless, SIMS is still advancing in hardware and is expected to contribute to the development of materials science through research and development of advanced analytical techniques.
