  • The load distribution and deformation of rock socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. The emphasis was laid on quantifying the end bearing load transfer characteristics of rock socketed drilled shafts based on 3D Finite Difference (FD) analysis performed under varying rock strength and rock mass conditions. From the results of FD analysis, it was found that the ultimate unit toe resistance ($q_{max}$) was influenced by both rock strength and rock mass conditions, while the initial tangent of end bearing load transfer curve ($G_{ini}$) was only dependent on rock strength. End bearing load transfer function of drilled shafts socketed in rock was proposed based on the FD analysis and the field loading tests which were performed on weathered rock in South Korea. Through the comparison with the results of the field loading tests, it is found that the load transfer curve by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by field loading tests, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer behavior of drilled shaft.

  • This paper is concerned with the analysis of the forming load characteristics of a forward-backward can extrusion process. The analysis in this paper is extended to the selection of press frame capacity for producing efficiently final product at low cost. The possible extrusion processes to shape a forward-backward can part with different outer diameters are categorized to investigate quantitatively the forming load, forming energy and maximum pressure exerted on the die-material interface. The categorized processes are composed of combined and/or some basic extrusion processes. After the analysis of the forming load characteristics, the frame capacity of press suitable for a selected process could be determined along with securing the load capacity and with considering productivity. In addition, it is also suggested that different load capacities be selected for different dimensions of a part such as the wall thickness in forward direction. The work in this paper could be a good reference for analysis of complex extrusion and selection of proper frame capacity of press to achieve low production cost and thus high productivity.

  • This study intends to reduce forming load by adding die rotation to flange-upsetting process. Materials arc formed by the compression and rotational torque which are accrued from rotation of the lower die accompanied by axial compression of the punch. For the theoretic analysis of flange-upsetting process using rotation die, slab method was used. Furthermore, for the verification of the theoretic analysis results, FEM simulation using DEFORM 3D a commercial software was done, and through the model material experiment using Prasticine, the results were compared and reviewed. Flange-upsetting process using rotation die shows reduced forming load compared with process without die rotation and demonstrates uniform distribution of strain. And as for the effect of the reduction of forming load, the less the aspect ratio(h0/d0) and the greater friction coefficient, the greater effect is. With increase in die rotation velocity, the effect of forming load reduction also increases little by little, but its effect on forming load reduction is very negligible compared with other forming parameters. Theoretic analysis results and simulation results coincided pretty well. The flange-upsetting process using die rotation are evaluated as useful process that can produce reduction of forming load and uniform strain.

  • In the case of high-energy line breaks in nuclear power plants, supersonic steam jet is formed due to the rapid depressurization. The steam jet can cause impingement load on the adjacent structures, piping systems and components. In order to secure the design integrity of the nuclear power plant, it is necessary to evaluate the load characteristics of the steam jet generated by high-energy pipe rupture. In the design process of nuclear power plant, jet impingement load evaluation was usually performed based on ANSI/ANS 58.2. However, U.S. NRC recently pointed out that ANSI/ANS 58.2 oversimplifies the jet behavior and that some assumptions are non-conservative. In addition, it is recommended that dynamic analysis techniques should be applied to consider transient load characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an evaluation methodology that can analyze the dynamic load characteristics of steam jet ejected when high energy pipe breaks. This research group has developed and validated the CFD analysis methodology to evaluate the transient behavior of supersonic impinging jet in the previous study. In this study, numerical study on the transient load characteristics of supersonic steam jet impingement was carried out and amplitude and frequency analysis of transient jet load was performed.

  • There has been a string of negligent accidents at the seaside. In addition, there is a shortage of professional equipment to deal with these negligent accidents at present. The purpose of this paper is to assess the development of a rescue lift using a structural analysis. The critical load of a support pipe on the rescue lift is investigated in this paper. The stability of the rescue lift is also determined in a structural analysis. In the critical load analysis, the effects of variations in the pipe length and the ratio of the moment of inertia are investigated. The total weight of the developed rescue lift is approximately 20.7kg, and the lift passed the load tests.

  • The uncertainty often observed in experimental strengths of masonry constituents makes critical the selection of the appropriate inputs in finite element analysis of complex masonry buildings, as well as requires modelling the building ultimate load as a random variable. On the other hand, the utilization of expensive Monte Carlo simulations to estimate collapse load probability distributions may become computationally impractical when a single analysis of a complex building requires hours of computer calculations. To reduce the computational cost of Monte Carlo simulations, direct computer calculations can be replaced with inexpensive Response Surface (RS) models. This work investigates the use of RS models in Monte Carlo analysis of complex masonry buildings with random input parameters. The accuracy of the estimated RS models, as well as the good estimations of the collapse load cumulative distributions obtained via polynomial RS models, show how the proposed approach could be a useful tool in problems of technical interest.

  • The strengthening of reinforced concrete structures by externally bonded GFRP has become increasingly common in resent years. However the analysis and design method for GFRP plate strengthening of RC beams is not well established yet. The purpose of present paper is, therefore, to define the failure mechanism and failure behavior of strengthened RC beam using GFRP and then to propose a resonable method for the calculation of interface debonding load for those beams. From the experimental results of beams strengthened by GFRP, the influence of length and thickness, width of plate on the interfacial debonding failure behavior of beam is studied and, on the basis of test results, the semi-empirical equation to predict debonding load is developed. The proposed theory based on nonlinear analysis and critical flexural crack width, predicts relatively well the debonding failure load of test beams and may be efficiently used in the analysis and design of strengthened RC beams using GFRP.

  • This paper deals with the flexural behaviors of R.C beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheets. The behaviors of strengthened beams which were preloaded up to 50%, 60% and 70% of the ultimate load of unstrengthened beam are compared with that of a beam which was not preloaded. The structural behaviors of strengthened beams are compared with analytical method in terms of load-strain of concrete, load-strain of steel bar, load-strain of CFS and falilure load. Four cases of analytical method are investigated according to cracked section or partially cracked section and including strain hardening effect of steel bar or not. Comparing the results of test and analysis, both are similar in terms of load-strain of concrete, and falilure load, the results of analytical method underestimate the failure load. But each results of load-strain of steel bar, load-strain of CFS near at failure is some different, thus near at failure the composite action between CFS and upper concrete is assumed to be disturbed. Consequently, the analytical method was proved to be efficient and accurate in estimating the flexural response of CFS strengthened RC beams.

  • In this study, the loading test and structural analysis were performed on the snow load and the results were compared. The load plates were loaded on the roof surface of the model, and structural analysis was performed under the same conditions. The result of loading test, the maximum displacement was observed in the center of the top, and the maximum stress was observed near the bottom point. Displacement and stress were found to have a high linear relationship with the load. Comparing the structural analysis results with the loading test results, the maximum displacement difference is 4.5% and the maximum stress difference is 10.2%. It is expected that closer results can be derived if the boundary conditions for the longitudinal direction of the model are clarified during experiments and analysis.
