In this study, the change of critical elements of the design evaluation was investigated during two decades at the architectural competition which was held nationwide in Germany. Specifically, the periods of investigation span both from July 1989 to June 1990 and from July 2009 to June 2010. The results of the analysis show that the cost of construction, the maintenance cost, the design of facade and the energy conservation are being magnified for the new important elements. The images of buildings and the economic aspects are meant to be high. The frequency of the critical elements for interior spaces is approximately two times more important than those for the forms and outdoor spaces. Overall, many juries of the architectural competition in Germany were interested in the elements for interior spaces. The field of function accounts for roughly the half of four basic architectural fields such as function, others, aesthetic and construction fields. The critical elements are required persistently such as context, Circulation, organization of space, form, landscape and outdoor space design, arrangement of building, cost of construction, function, design of facade, location of main entrance. These items are regarded as the most important elements of the design evaluation at the competition. Knowing the change of critical elements of the design evaluation, we can understand the trend of architecture in Germany. The results of this study can be applied in Korea to develop the critical elements of design.

The purpose of this study is to know the important design element for a public library, after analyzing design concept and organization of space of the prize winner at the architectural competition. To carry out the research, the best 31 works between the year of 2005 and 2010 were collected by the architectural magazine A&C published in every other month. During the research, special characters of each prize winner have been analyzed in the aspect of the design concept and the organization of space. While working on the design concept, a factor that created such concept was successfully figured out, and studying on the organization of space enabled us to know the special characters of the interior space. According to the result of the analysis in this study, the design elements which are selected highly frequent are ordered as follows; (1)organization of space, (2)function & shape, (3)circulation, (4)landscape, (5)symbolic aspect. Through the analysis for the organization of space, I reach a conclusion, the frequent type is a "PM-ES-CJ". The study is anticipated to be helpful in understanding the trends in the field of designing a public library, and it is also likely for an architect to use it as a reference.

The purpose of this study is to comprehend how traditional design theory, 'design elements and principles' have been applied to space design, taking interior designs of restaurants as the subjects of the research. Furthermore, this study intends to provide practical help to the restaurant designers and students who major in interior design, by summarizing the applications case by case. For the analysis, 10 restaurant projects were selected to which 'design elements and principles' were well applied. In order to widen the scope of application cases, this study selected four Korean restaurant projects, and three US and Japan restaurant projects, respectively. Through the analysis, it was found that many unexpected results can be produced when various elements composing a space are combined together, including not only two-dimensional elements such as plane and color, texture, and pattern but also three-dimensional elements and architectural elements composing interior space. Moreover, I became to have confidence that 'design elements and principles' would sustain the value in most design parts including interior design in the future as well.

From long time ago, stairs are performed the central role of vertical circulation system in architectural planning for convenience of human. The purpose of this study is to find the spacial characteristics of stairs in architectural space. Two methods In this study are discussed. First, it is to extract the formal elements in its stairs shape raising an impulse of visual-perceptible recognition. Second, it is to analysis its characteristic through relationship between stairs and spacial elements. In conclusion, the characteristics of stairs in architectural space have as follows 1) spatial connection - to connect between space and other space or masses; 2) spatial separation - to separate between inner space and other space; 3) openness or closeness of space; 4) directed-tention of space.

In modem days when architectural materials have grave impacts on overall design expression, materials for architecture, especially finishing materials have become the most essential elements for the design expression, as architectural space and form have been. When it comes to the architectural materials, they can be conceived by visual and tactile sensory system and perceptional system which based on memory and experience. This study confirms how materials bring into effect on architecture in the sense of its design. The main subject of this analysis is expression method of architectural finishing materials. Also, this study finds out the relationship between finishing materials and the images of materials by analyzing the effect factor of architectural material expression with the perspectives of materials, formal and environments and by examining roles of the architectural materials in design. The material factor, in the expression of materiality, is how to make tectonic space and to vary the surface of building as finishing material design. The formal factor is related to set up the new direction in the architectural form and to create the dynamic and informal space. And the social and cultural environment as the effect factor gives new situation and context to architectural material expression. This principle enables us to use architectural materials as one of the important elements which express the whole characteristics of the area.

[Purpose] Recently, skyscrapers have sharply increased throughout the world, including South Korea. Although a skyscraper has its own merit such as the landmark of a city, it also has various problems like massive energy consumption. This study is aimed to establish the concept of environment-friendly skyscraper and propose a plan to realize skyscraper after analyzing the architectural, facility and environmental friendly elements of skyscrapers. [Method] This study lists up skyscrapers over 40 floors and 200 meters high. Upon 10 constructed buildings, it analyzes their basic plans and the green building technologies applied to them and suggests effective and environment-friendly architectural plan. [Result] This study examined the distinctions of the layout, shape, facade, and floor plan plane of 10 skyscrapers and found out specific techniques to be used for the use plan of natural energy, plan for saving resources and reducing wastes and a plan for environmental architecture and system.

Design concepts of light can be divided into two respects, visual plastic and metaphysical meaning. The current research focuses on the second respect. The meaning of light is abstract characteristics(for example, divinity, spirituality, or image) ultimately expressed by visual plastic. Because it makes architectural space abundant, it have been expressed frequently in architectural space until now. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize and explain and arrange the meanings of light in the category that have been expressed in architectural space from ancient to current. The method of this study is content analysis and case study, and this is supplement by theoretical consideration on the meaning of light(relationship between perception and meaning, elements to form meaning etc.). This study consists of three steps. Firstly, through the content analysis of existing literature and documents, 17 meanings of light are confirmed. Secondly, these 17 meanings are defined and explained in 3 categories(symbolic, esthetic, and experiential character). Thirdly, they are additionally explained and articulated by case study. In the result, various meanings of light that have been fragmentarily expressed in architectural space until now is clearly arranged at a glance. Those suggested design concepts will be basic conferential material, available to the interior designers and students who want to utilize the organised study concepts.

The study is aimed to analyze cases of hotel room designs based on the 'Art Quotient'. It is focused on design elements of livability, analyzing the space design in terms of biophilic design and experiential marketing. This paper proposes a direction for hotel design based on the analysis result. The scope of the study includes the cases of 17 hotels in the area of Seoul achieving five stars in Korea. This paper presents an analysis whether the room space of hotels provide a user-oriented life experience from the perspective of biophilic design and experiential marketing. In this study, we focused on the concept of 'refuge', one of the biophilic design elements that express the value of life sense, and the element of 'sense', one of the strategic experiential modules of experiential marketing. After analyzing the hotel case studies, the space was evaluated using five factors of art quotient as a design method to provide a life experience in the hotel room. Analysis of the design space from the viewpoint of refuge, rather than architectural elements, proved that decorative elements appeared most commonly in all hotel rooms. Further, through an analysis based on the measures of 'sense', an experiential element, visual elements were mostly enforced in among the elements of the five senses. In other words, when designing a hotel room space, visual elements such as color, pattern, furniture, lighting and style are mainly utilized. Examining the analysis of the design elements from the point of view of the art quotient, the rooms of all the hotel's suite types include elements of 'communication'. Most of the hotel rooms focused on stimulating the aesthetic sensibility of customers. This resulted in the elements of 'immersion' showing poor results. In conclusion, it is necessary to provide the five senses of the arts index in a balanced manner to provide a life experience through the five senses.

Modern architecture tends to split the everyday life and the space of human. Position of architecture should be on the relationship between nature and human need. It will be study on the everyday life of architecture from architecture and everyday life of human relationships. Based on this study, it makes clear the visual aspects of architectural experience to acquire spatial tones for analyzing architectural Everyday-ness. In this case, Portugal's modern architectural space was impressing, because of the construction of local color and architectural vocabulary of the Everyday-ness. Therefore, the Everyday-ness of Architecture by relationship analysis reveals the space of these spatial tones. Spatial characteristics of the Everyday-ness of architecture be analyzed of simplicity, purity, locality, reminiscent, continuity, and transition, etc. Expression elements of spatial tones can be derived into five classes such as light, color, material, pattern (texture), and depth. In conclusion, spatial characteristics of the Everyday-ness and expression elements of spatial tones consist of configuration matrixes to analyze the spatial tones of the contemporary architecture in Portugal. As a result of this study, the expression characteristics of spatial tones of contemporary architecture in Portugal are background-ness, one-ness, and inherence. I hope this study will be applied to the basic data of the architectural Everyday-ness.

The design composition elements and the mechanical behavior of trusses have been investigated for Pratt trusses. As a result, it was determined that the design composition elements of the trusses consist of the composition of webs, the distance between joints, the chords profile, the depth of the truss, and the double chord composition. In addition, by analyzing models with a variation of elements, comprehensive features of structural behavior have been presented for variations of design of Pratt trusses. This is to provide more effective and useful design information on truss structure in the architectural and structural planning stage.
