Purpose: Gait is the most basic element when evaluating the quality of life with activities of daily living under ordinary life circumstances. Symmetrical use of the lower extremities requires complicated coordination of all limbs. Thus, this study examined asymmetry of muscle activity quadriceps femoris and tibialis anterior as a baseline for training during over-ground walking and stair walking of stroke patients. Methods: Subjects were 14 stroke patients included as one experimental group. Gait speed used in this study was determined by the subject. Low extremity paretic and non-paretic EMG was compared using the surface EMG system. Results: The low extremity EMG difference was statistically significant during over-ground walking and stair walking (p<0.05). The result of low extremity EMG substituted symmetry ratio formula was compared to EMG symmetry ratio in both legs during over-ground walking and stair walking. The average symmetry ratio of quadriceps femoris during over-ground walking was 0.65, and average symmetry ratio of quadriceps femoris during stair walking was 0.47, with significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: EMG data was higher in stair walking than over-ground walking. However, in the comparison of symmetry ratio, asymmetric EMG of quadriceps femoris was significantly increased during stair walking. These findings suggested that application of stair walking for strengthening of both legs can be positive, but the key factor is maintaining asymmetrical posture of both legs. Therefore, physical therapists should make an effort to reduce asymmetry of quadriceps femoris power during stair walking by stroke patients.

Transient kinetics of $NH_3$ adsorption/desorption and of SCR(selective catalytic reduction) of NO with $NH_3$ were studied over vanadium based catalysts, such as $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ and $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$. In the present catalytic reaction process, NO adsorption is neglected while $NH_3$ is strongly chemisorbed on the catalytic surface. Accordingly, it is ruled out the possibility of a reaction between strongly adsorbed $NH_3$ and NO species in line with the hypothesis of an Eley-Rideal mechanism. The present kinetic model assumes; (1) non-activated $NH_3$ adsorption, (2) Temkin-type $NH_3$ coverage dependence of the desorption energy, (3) non-linear dependence of the SCR reaction rate on the $NH_3$ surface coverage. Thus, the surface heterogeneity for adsorption/desorption of $NH_3$ is taken into account in this model. The present study extends the pure chemical kinetic model based on a powdered-phase catalytic system to the chemico-physical one applicable to a realistic monolith reactor.
Several medicinal plants are ethnomedically used in Korea as agents for treating infection, anti-inflammation, and pain relief. However, beyond typical inhibitory effects on cell growth, little is known about the potential anti-biofilm activity of these herbs, which may help to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activities of the methanol extracts of 37 Korean medicinal plants against dental pathogens Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, which synergize their virulence so as to induce the formation of plaque biofilms in the oral cavity. The antimicrobial activities were investigated by broth dilution and disk diffusion assay. The anti-biofilm and antioxidant activities were evaluated based on the inhibitory effect against glucosyltransferase (GTase) and the DPPH assay, respectively. Among 37 herbs, eight plant extracts presented growth and biofilm inhibitory activities against both etiologic bacteria. Among them, the methanol extracts (1.0 mg/ml) from Camellia japonica and Thuja orientalis significantly inhibited the growth of both bacteria by over 76% and over 83% in liquid media, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of these methanol extracts were determined to be 0.5 mg/ml using a disk diffusion assay on solid agar media. Biofilm formation was inhibited by more than 92.4% and 98.0%, respectively, using the same concentration of each extract. The present results demonstrate that the medicinal plants C. japonica and T. orientalis are potentially useful as antimicrobial and anti-biofilm agents in preventing dental diseases.

Background: In previous work, we reported that Korean Red Ginseng saponin fraction (RGSF) showed anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in vivo. Methods: The present study investigated the radioprotective properties of RGSF by examining its effects on ionizing radiation (IR)-enhanced and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammatory responses in murine macrophage cells. Results: RGSF induced strong downregulation of IR-enhanced and LPS-induced proinflammatory responses such as nitric oxide (NO) production (Inhibitory Concentration $50(IC_{50})=5.1{\pm}0.8{\mu}M$) and interleukin-$1{\beta}$ levels. RGSF was found to exert its radioprotective effects by inhibition of a signaling cascade that activated checkpoint kinase 2enuclear factor-${\kappa}B$. In addition, RGSF strongly inhibited IR-enhanced LPS-induced expression of hemoxyganase-1, implying that the latter may be a potential target of RGSF. Conclusion: Taken together, our data suggest that RGSF can be considered and developed for use as an effective radioprotective agent with minimal adverse effects.
In this study, we have developed a new detection method using Si field effect transistor (FET)-type biosensors, which enables the direct monitoring of antigen-antibody binding within very high-ionic-strength solutions such as 1$\times$PBS and human serum. In the new method, as no additional dilution or desalting processes are required, the FET-type biosensors can be more suitable for ultrasensitive and real-time analysis of raw sample solutions. The new detection scheme is based on the observation that the strength of antigen-antibody-specific binding is significantly influenced by the ionic strength of the reaction solutions. For a prostate specific antigen (PSA), in some conditions, the binding reaction between PSA and anti-PSA in a low-ionic strength reaction solution such as 10 ${\mu}M$ phosphate buffer is weak (reversible), while that in high-ionic strength reaction solutions such as 1$\times$PBS or human serum is strong.
Community structure and biodiversity of benthic marine algae were studied in the rocky shore of Phohang New Port, Yeoungil Bay. A total of 79 species of marine algae including 8 Chlorophyta, 23 Phaeophyta and 48 Rhodophyta are listed. The dominant algal species were Corallina pilulifera in all seasons, and Sargassum homeri in winter. Lomentaria catenata, Lomentaria hakodatensis, Grateloupia laceolata, Sargassum thunbergii, Chondria crassicaulis, Ulva pertusa, and Hypnea charoides were subdominant at different seasons. The algal biomass per unit area of the benthic algal community in Pohang New Port under construction was 14506 - 398.93 g dry wt m-2, which means that its annually averaged value is 273.45 g dry wt m-2 . The seasonal change in algal biomass showed highs in winter and spring, and lows in summer and autumn. The algal species diversity (H') based on algal biomass was 2.07 annually in average, with 2.42 in winter, 2.65 in spring, 1.79 in summer and 1.43 in autumn. It was high in winter and spring seasons and low in summer and autumn seasons. It is caused by that spring and winter are the profitable growth time for algae and species components in this study were dominated by the annual or seasonal rather than perennial plants.

This paper presents an improved field uniformity in a reverberation chamber, that can be alternatively used for the analysis and the measurement of electromagnetic interference and immunity, with a designed CRD(Cubical Residue Diffuser) that have various dimensions. The Schroeder type CRD is designed for $1\sim3$ GHz band and the FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) method is used to analyze the field characteristics. At 2 GHz, the standard deviation of test volume in the reverberation chamber is the smallest and has a good field distribution with a CRD of $40\sim80%$ dimension of one side of the reverberation chamber. The Electric field uniformity gets worse when the dimension of a CRD is either below 40 % or above 80 % of the side wall. The result shows that the standard deviation of the test volume in the reverberation chamber with a CRD of 44 % dimension is improved by 1 dB compared with that of the reverberation chamber with a CRD of 100 % dimension.

This paper presents an electric field distribution in a reverberation chamber using cylindrical diffuser. The characteristics of electric field distributions are compared with QRD(Quadratic Residue Diffuser) and cylindrical diffuser for $1{\sim}3$ GHz frequency band. The FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to analyze the field characteristics, and the field uniformity. At 2 GHz, the standard deviation and the tolerance of test volume in the reverberation chamber are improved by 0.11 dB, 0.43 dB for the case of cylindrical diffuser. The field strength is increased by 43.2 dBmV/m vs QRD's of 36.6 dBmV/m. Comparing with QRD's, the characteristic of polarization is also improved. These results show that reverberation chamber using cylindrical diffuser can be used alternative facility for measurement of electromagnetic interference and immunity.
The x values and electrical conductivities of the nonstoichiometric compounds$ CeO_{2-x} have been measured in a temperature range from 600 to 1200$^{\circ}C$ under oxygen partial pressure of $2{\times}10^{-1}{\sim}1{\times}10^{-4}$ atm. The enthalpy of the defect formation shows an endothermic process with the oxygen partial pressure dependence (1/n value) of -1/3.18 ∼ -1/3.69. The activation energy and 1/n value for the electrical conductivity are estimated as 1.75 eV and -1/4, respectively. According to the x values, the $\sigma$ values, and the thermodynamic data, the defect structure of the ceria seems to be the formation of singly charged negative oxygen vacancies. The n-type semiconducting behaviors could be explained by the presence of excess metals in the lattice as the conduction electron donor.

This paper presents the characteristics of electromagnetic field uniformity in a reverberation chamber with flat diffusers composed of multiple dielectric materials that can be used as an alternative facility for the analysis, test and evaluation of electromagnetic interference and immunity. The field characteristics and the size of the test volume inside the reverberation chamber with the new diffuser of multiple dielectric materials are simulated and analyzed at $2.5{\sim}3$ GHz band. The FDTD method is used to analyze the field characteristics. The field uniformity, polarization characteristics and tolerance are improved by the new diffuser with smaller physical size. The reverberation chamber with flat diffusers composed of multiple dielectric materials shows better electromagnetic performance and larger test volume than normal chamber.
