  • The input equivalent resistances and operating properties of a transless double balanced modulator are quantitatively investigated in considerations of the nonlinear characteristics of diodes. The input equivalent resistances are derived from the power loss calculations of the circuit. Carrier suppression and modulation efficiency are calculated by using approximate equations which describe the dynamic curves of the diode circuits. The results are represented as a function of the voltage amplitude of a carrier signal owing to the nonlinear characteristics of diodes.

  • In this paper, a new high resolution XGA-SLM is implemented through modification of a commercial TFT-LCD beam projector and its optical modulation characteristics as a spatial light modulator(SLM) is also analyzed. First, the optics module, projection lamp and fans are removed from a commercial beam projector and instead some electric circuits to compensate their removal are manufactured and then, by inserting them into the beam projector, a new XGA-SLM is finally implemented. Second, from some optical experimental results, this TFT-SLM is found to have a good optical linearity in amplitude and phase modulation characteristics as a function of the input gray levels. Especially, through implementation of a binary phase-type correlator such as BPEJTC by using the suggested TFT-LCD panel, the implemented SLM is proposed as a new relatively low-cost and high resolution SLM for optical information processing.

  • The PAL (Pohang Accelerator Laboratory) is persuading to construct a SASE-XFEL facility (PAL XFEL) that supplies coherent X-rays. The bright and stable electron beam is essential for the PAL XEL. The electron beams has to have an emittance of 1.0 mm-mrad, a peak current of 3 kA, and a low energy spread of 1.0 MeV. In order to provide reasonably stable SASE output, the RF stability of 0.02% rms is required for both RF phase and amplitude. This is a technologically challenging issue for PAL XFEL. An inverter technology is to be applied to charge the PFN of a new modulator. Therefore, a new inverter system should provide very stable charging performances. This paper presents the development of an ultra stable klystron-modulator with an inverter power supply.

  • Adaptive version of the delta modulator that is akin to wyllabic companding for telephony is described. A digital technique is used to sense the slope of the input signal and to control the amplitude of the pulses supplied to the RC network in the feed back loop. Thus the development was stimulated by the suitability of delta modulator for low-cost integrated circuits. Analysis are made of the optimum overload characteristics, stability, SNR for improving the frequency range and these results have been esperimentally verfied.

  • A Spatial light modulator (SLM) is a real-time programmable device having the modulation function of the amplitude, phase or polarization of an optical wavefront as a function of position via electrical or optical control signals. Various types of reusable SLMs with two-dimensional pixel arrays are centrally important devices in volumetric recording, data processing, pattern recognition, optical computer and other optical system. • This paper proposes a new predistortion linearizer with amplitude modulator and PFG(Polar Function Generator) using second order harmonic signals. This linearizer consists of PFG that combine with in-phase and quadrature-phase of second harmonic signals and amplitude modulator in main path. The predistorted third order intermodulation distortion(IMD3) signals that are generated by amplitude modulator with fundamental and PFG signals, improve a amplifier nonlinear characteristics. The proposed linearizer and amplifier have been manufactured and tested to operate in cellular base-station transmitting band$(869\sim894MHz)$. The test results show that IMD3 can be removed by more than 22.5 dB in case of CW 2-tone signals ${\Delta}f=1$ MHz, and the adjacent channel power ratio(ACPR) also can be improved by more than 8.4 dB for CDMA IS-95 1FA signals.

  • The use of an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometric amplitude modulator to measure a relatively low frequency electric field strength is described. The sensitivity of an electric field sensor using a $Ti:LiMbO_3$ optical modulator is strongly affected by the shape of a electrode(probe antenna). To measure the low frequency electric field, a probe antenna of wide effective area is more useful than the usual dipole antenna. As a proof of this, the optical modulator was fabricated with a plate-type probe antenna and the usefulness of this antenna tested for measuring low frequency electric field strength. Measurements were performed in the range 0.1 V/cm to 60 V/cm at 60Hz through 100 kHz. Using a probe antenna of $10\;mm{\times}10\;mm$, the output voltage of $10^{-2}\;mV$ was measured with respect to the electric field strength of 0.1 V/cm at 60 Hz. By increasing the effective area of the probe antenna, better sensitivity is obtainable over the measured range.

  • In this paper, a predistortion linearizer using the in-phase modulator is proposed. The harmonic generator of the proposed predistorter extracts a second harmonic signals. These signals are divided in-phase and quadrature-phase signals, and then amplifying each signals using variable gain amplifier. An in-phase modulator, modulate fundamental signal with second harmonic signals, generates the predistortion intermodulation distortion (IM) signals and controls amplitude and phase of them with modulation factors. As a result, this predistorter is suppressed intermodulation distortion signals of power amplifier effectively. The proposed linearizer has been implemented to operate in Cellular-band. The test results show that the third order IM is cancelled more than 20dB in case of CW 2-tone signals with ${\Delta}f$=1MHz. Also, it's improved the adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) more than 7dB for IS-95 CDMA 1FA signals.
