  • Amphiphilic random copolymers can form various types of micelles in aqueous media depending on the balance between two opposite interactions- electrostatic repulsion and hydrophobic attraction. This balance can change by addition of some organic solvent to the aqueous solution, and as a result, we can control the micellar structure and micellization equilibrium by changing the solvent content. In the present study, we have investigated the micellization equilibrium of an amphiphilic statistical copolymer consisting of sodium 2-(acrylamido)-2- methylpropanesulfonate and hexyl methacrylate in mixtures of water and methanol by sedimentation equilibrium and fluorescence.

  • A novel amphiphilic, symmetric rod-coil, triblock copolymer (denoted as PHEMA-b-PF-b-PHEMA) of poly(9,9-didodecylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PF) and poly(hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) was synthesized. A $\pi$-conjugated poly(9,9-didodecylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PF) was used as a rodlike midblock segment and connected with hydrophilic end blocks of poly(hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) by using an ATRP technique. The chemical structure of PHEMA-b-PF-b-PHEMA was confirmed by $^{1}H$-NMR and GPC, and its PL properties were investigated in selected solvents. Due to the dissimilarities in molecular conformation and solubility between PHEMA and PF blocks, both block segments were segregated to display a phase-separated morphology on a Si wafer.

  • The morphology of the $D_2O$-induced reverse micellar structure of an amphiphilic block copolymer of poly( ethylene oxide )-b-poly(propylene oxide )-b-poly( ethylene oxide )($EO_{76}PO_{29}EO_{76}$) was investigated in hydrophobic media by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Increasing $D_2O$ in the styrene/divinylbenzene solution of $EO_{76}PO_{29}EO_{76}$ led to a change in morphology of the reverse micelles from a short range ordered molecular aggregate to a hexagonally arranged micelle, and further to a spherical micelle.

  • The amphiphilic copolymer by the conjugation of biocompatible chitosan and antioxidant lipoic acid was studied as a drug delivery carrier. The amphiphilic copolymer was self-assembled to form nanoparticles in the aqueous solution. 5-Fluorouracil widely used as an anticancer drug was encapsulated inside the nanoparticles by a solid dispersion method. The degree of branching of lipoic acid on chitosan was controlled to obtain the optimal condition for the drug delivery carrier. The sizes of nanoparticles were about 250 nm by the dynamic light scattering. The encapsulation efficiency of nanoparticles were about 10%. The copolymer with 42% degree of branching showed the best performance as a drug delivery carrier.

  • The characterization method for associating polymer solutions was briefly reviewed. The method has not yet established in comparison with the characterization method for molecularly dispersed polymers in solution. However, two examples of associating polymer systems, living polybutadiene anions and amphiphilic statistical copolymers, were successfully characterized on the basis of suitable model and theory.

  • Novel amphiphilic, thermo-responsive polyaspartamides which showed both LCST (lower critical solution temperature), and sol-gel transition were prepared and characterized. The polyaspartamide derivatives were synthesized from polysuccinimide, the polycondensate of aspartic acid monomer, via successive nucleophilic ring-opening reaction by using dodecylamine and N-isopropylethylenediamine (NIPEDA). At the intermediate composition ranges, the dilute aqueous solution exhibited a thermally responsive phase separation due to the presence of LCST. The phase transition temperature was controllable by changing the content of pendent groups. In addition, a physical gelation, i.e. the sol-gel transition was observed from the concentrated solutions, which was elucidated by dynamic viscoelastic measurements. These novel injectable and thermo-responsive hydrogels have potential for various biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and current drug delivery system.

  • Spilling pollutants and its contamination to the ground have serious impact to public resulting in various research about remediation techniques. In this study, the use of amphiphilic block copolymer for remediation was investigated with a series of laboratory tests on removal of hydrophobic contaminant in soil. Four types of amphiphilic block copolymer were developed and the efficiency of the cleaning was compared with surfactant using arbitrary diesel-contaminated soils. The results of the study show that the use of amphiphilic polymer in the soil washing process significantly enhanced the remediation of the contaminated soil and a potential of new methodology of eco-friendly remediation.

  • Block copolymer micelles are generally formed via the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers in an aqueous medium. The hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks form shell and core micelles, respectively. The block copolymers of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG)-b-poly(2-diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PDPA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization, with the macro initiator synthesized by the coupling of 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide with MPEG in the presence of a triethyl amine base catalyst. The atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate was performed in conjunction with an N,N,N',N",N"-pentamethyl-diethylenetriamine/copper bromide catalyst system, in DMF, at $70^{\circ}C$. The pH induced micellization/demicellization was studied using fluorescence, with a pyrene probe. Furthermore, the pH dependent micellization was confirmed using the microviscosity method, with a dipyme fluorescence probe. The pH dependant micelle size distribution was studied using dynamic light scattering. The characterization of the synthesized polymers was established using gel permeation chromatography and from the $^1H-nuclear$ magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
