Living Anionic Polymerization of Isocyanates

  • We have identified sodium benzanilide (Na-BA), sodium diphenyl amine (Na-DPA) and sodium deoxibenzoin (Na-DB) as very efficient initiators for the living anionic polymerization of HIC. It has a slow propagation rate with the additive function of chain end protection, offering in the process a perfect control over MW and MWD. The well-defined amphiphilic coil-rod, coil-rod-coil, and rod-coil-rod block-copolymers of PHIC and P2VP with controlled architecture have been synthesized for the first time with ${\sim}100\;%$ yields. The resulting block copolymers showed lamellar film, donuts, solid and hollow micelles, by simply varying the solvents and the block compositions.

  • The carboxylated MWNTs were successfully prepared by conventional acid treatment, and their structures were confirmed by FT-IR, Raman and TEM analysis. The water-dispersibility of the surface modified WNTs were good. The COOH-MWNT will show better stability during the emulsion polymerization as compared with Pristine MWNT. In-situ emulsion polymerizations of methyl methacrylate N(MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (BA) were carried out. Aggregate size and dispersion stability of the CNTs in water phase were measured using dynamic light scattering, turbidity, UV-visible spectrophotometer, and electron microscope. In addition, thermo-mechanical properties of MWNT/polymer nanocomposites were investigated.

  • Well defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers of poly(styrene-b-vinylbenzylphosphonic acid) (PS-b-PVBPA) were prepared by controlled radical polymerization technique, two-step hydrolysis reactions using trime-thylsilyl bromide from the corresponding phosphonic ethyl ester. By indirect, backward pH titration of the block copolymer, a good titration curve of a dibasic acid was observed. The IEC values obtained from both backward pH titration and volumetric back titration were almost identical. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) of the phosphonic acid containing block copolymer showed a high thermal stability up to $400^{\circ}C$.

  • The antiwear properties of amphiphilic monolayers and composite multilayer on silicon surface were investigated using micro­tribometer and Auger Electron Spectroscopy. Langmuir­Blodgett (LB) monolayers from behenic acid, 2,4­heneicosanedione(HD) and its lopper complex((HD)$_2$Cu) were fabricated on silicon surface and the composite multilayer of 5­bilayer of (HD)$_2$Cu was fabricated on the surface of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self­assembled monolayer (SAM). We observed that LB monolayers and the composite multilayer exhibited a steady and excellent friction response when compared with the OTS SAM. These LB mono and multilayer also showed much higher wear­resistance than the OTS SAM.

  • In this study, an effective fluorescence pH sensor based on conjugated polyelectrolyte micelles (CPMs) was devised for detecting extremely acidic conditions. An amphiphilic coumarin derivative (CC12-N), a building block, was prepared, into which an ionizable amino group, aryl amine, was incorporated as a potential hydrophilic moiety. This monomer displays self-assembled micelle formation in extremely acidic pH ranges, giving a hydrophobic π-extended conjugated system at the inner part and hydrophilic functionality at the periphery, resulting in efficient fluorescence intensity enhancement. This new micelle-based fluorescence provides an efficient sensing platform for detecting very low pH values in the presence of competing substances.

Microwave Dielectric Properties of Oriented BN / Polyvinyl Butyral Matrix Composites

  • The effects of an amphiphilic agent and the orientation of BN on the microwave dielectric properties of BN / polyvinyl butyral (PVB) composites were investigated as a function of the BN content in volume fractions from 0.1 to 0.5 ($V_f$). The plate-shaped BN samples were oriented in the PVB matrix by physical processes, in this case tape casting and laminate methods. With an increase in the BN content, the dielectric constant (K) increased because the K of BN was higher than that of the PVB. At the same BN content, composites with an in-plane orientation of the BN showed a higher dielectric constant than that of composites with a transverse orientation of the BN because the ceramics were oriented parallel to the electric field. All of the composites showed nearly constant K values ranging from 1 to 9.4 GHz, indicating good frequency stability over a wide frequency range. At the same frequency, the K values of the composites increased with an increase in the BN content.

효율적인 수은이온 검출을 위한 피렌-보론산 기반의 형광센서 개발 (A Pyrenylboronic Acid-based Fluorescence Sensor for Highly Efficient Detection of Mercury(II) Ions)

  • A new chemosensor based on a self-assembled system has been devised to detect Hg2+ions efficiently. We demonstrated that the amphiphilic building blocks consisting of pyrene and boronic acid (1) aggregate in aqueous solutions and provide an outstanding sensing platform for sensitive detection. The self-assembled 1 exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ion detection via fluorescence quenching, where the Hg2+ion detection ensued from a fast transmetallation of 1. The Stern-Volmer (SV) quenching constant for its fluorescence quenching by Hg2+ions was approximately 1.58 × 108 M-1. In addition, self-assembled 1 exhibited excellent sensing abilities at nano-molar concentration levels when tap water and freshwater samples were contaminated with of Hg2+ ions.

Interface control in polymer/clay nanocomposites

  • In order to suppress a repulsive interfacial energy between hydrophilic clay and hydrophobic polymer matrix in preparing a polymer/clay nanocomposite, a third component of amphiphilic nature such as poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) was introduced into the model system of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN)/Na-montmorillonite. Once $\varepsilon$-caprolactone was polymerized in the presence of Na-rnontmorillonite, the successful ring-opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone and the well-developed exfoliated structure of PCL/Na-montmorillonite mixture were confirmed, Thereafter, SAN was melt-mixed with PCL/Na-montmorillonite nanocomposite, which resulted in that SAN matrix and PCL fraction were completely miscible to form homogeneous mixture with retention of the exfoliated state of Na-montmorillonite, exhibiting that PCL effectively stabilizes the repulsive polymer/clay interface and contributes the improvement of mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.

The rheology of two-dimensional systems

  • This paper discusses the rheology of complex interfaces comprised of amphiphilic materials that are susceptible to flow-induced orientation and deformation. The consequence of the coupling of the film micro-structure to flow leads to nonlinear rheology and surface fluid dynamics. Experimental methods designed to determine the mechanical rheological material functions of fluid-fluid interfaces as well as local, molecular and morphological responses are presented. These include a newly developed interfacial stress rheometer, flow ultraviolet dichroism, and Brewster-angle microscopy. These techniques are applied to a number of complex interfaces ranging from low molecular weight amphiphiles to polymer monolayers. Nonlinear flow phenomena ranging from two-dimensional nematic responses to highly elastic surface flows that manifest surface normal stress differences and elongational viscosities are described.
