Geochemical and Sm-Nd isotopic results are reported for amphibolite of the Muju area, Ryeongnam massif. Major and trace element data analyzed indicate that the parental rock of the Muju amphibolite is tholeiitic basalt. The Sm-Nd amphibole-WR-plagioclase data define an isochron corresponding to $1766{\pm}121Ma$ ($1{\sigma}$) (MSWD=1.10) with an initial ratio of $0.51032{\pm}15$. We interpret this age as a metamorphic age of the Muju amphibolite. Tectonic discrimination diagrams clearly fail when they are applied to the Muju amphibolite probably due to compositional variations resulting from crustal contamination and/or degrees of partial melting.
We report major element chemistry of the Chuncheon amphibolite in the Precambrian Kyonggi massif and discuss its origin. On the basis of areal distribution and chemical difference, the Chuncheon amphibolite can be divided into the Gubongsan arnphibolite in the Gubongsan Group east of Chuncheon city and the Sangguli amphibolite in the Yongduri gneiss complex occurring to the southeast of the Gubongsan Group. Overall major element characteristics of the Chuncheon amphibolite indicate an igneous precursor, although it shows concordant relationship with metasedimentary rocks in many cases. The parental rock of the amphibolite has tholeiitic composition with 45-53wt% $SiO_2$. The Sangguli amphibolite has lower MgO than the Gubongsan one. The difference in $TiO_2$/P_2O_5 ratio between the two amphibolites suggests that they are not genetically related. In MgO variation diagrams, $Na_2O$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ show scattered pattern, while MgO has positive correlation with CaO and negative one with $SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, $P-2O_5$ and $K_2O$. These variations can be interpreted as the result of differentiation of basaltic magma with fractionation of olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase. Tectonic discrimination using major elements generally suggest withinplate environment for the Chuncheon amphibolite which is similar to that of the amphibolite in the Ogcheon belt.
We applied Sm-Nd isotopic system to so-called amphibolites occurring within the Ogcheon group to provide constraints on the age of the metasedimentary rocks and to characterize tectonic environment of basaltic magmatism. An internal mineral isochron age of $677{\pm}91Ma({\sigma})$ was obtained from a coarse-grained, intrusive, amphibolite near Mungyeong. Considering previous studies on the age of the Ogcheon group, we interpret that the isochron represents either early metamorphic or emplacement age. The depositional age of the metasedimentary rocks intruded by the amphibolite would be prior to late Proterozoic. The present study and Cambro-Ordovician fossil evidences of previous workers suggest that both Precambrian and Phanerozoic rocks are present in the Ogcheon group. Positive ${\varepsilon}$ Nd values(+2.4 to +3.5) of four whole rocks indicate mantle origin for the amphibolite. These isotopic data, along with published immobile trace element data of Cluzel et al.(1989), strongly suggest that parental rocks of the amphibolite formed in an intraplate environment rather than in island arc or midocean ridge. The age and tectonic environment of amphibolites in the Ogcheon belt suggest that the basaltic magmatism may be related to the late Proterozoic break-up of a presumed supercontinent, but not to the Triassic(?) collision between North and South China continents.
Amphibolite-hosted Fe-Ti mineralization at the Soyeonpyeong Island, located in central western part of the Korean Peninsula is a typical orthomagmatic Fe-Ti oxide deposit in South Korea. The amphibolite intruded into NW-SE trending Precambrian metasedimentary rocks. Lower amphibolite is characterized by igneous layering, consisting of feldspar-dominant and amphibole-Fe-Ti oxide-dominant layers. The igneous layering shows complicated and/or sharp contact. In contrast, upper amphibolite has a more complicated lithofacies (garnet-bearing, coarser, and schistose), and massive Fe-Ti oxide ore alternates with schistose amphibolite. NS- and EW-trending fault systems lead to redistribute upper amphibolite-hosted Fe-Ti orebody and igneous layering of lower amphibolite, respectively. The whole-rock compositions of amphibolite and Fe-Ti oxide ore reflect their constituent minerals. Amphibolite shows significantly positive Eu anomalies whereas Fe-Ti oxide ore has weak negative Eu anomalies. Plagioclase (Andesine to oligoclase) and Fe-Ti oxide minerals have constant composition regardless of their distribution. Amphibole has a compositionally variable but it doesn't reflect the chemical evolution. Mineral compositions within individual layers and successive layers are relatively constant not showing any stratigraphic evolution. This suggests that there are no successive injections of Fe-rich magma or assimilation with Fe-rich country rocks. Contrasting Eu anomalies between amphibolite and Fe-Ti oxide ore also suggest that extensive plagioclase fractionation during early crystallization stage cause increase in $Fe_2O_3/FeO$ ratio and overall Fe contents in the residual magma. Thus, Fe-rich residual liquids may migrate at the upper amphibolite by filter pressing mechanism and then produce sheeted massive Fe-Ti mineralization during late fractional crystallization.
Ogbang scheelite deposit imbedded in amphibolite of unknown age was believed, by the previous workers, to be of pegmatite vein. The vein material is composed mainly of plagioclase (albite and oligoclase) and minor amount (less than 5 to 10% each) of hornblende, biotite and quartz. Orthoclose and tourmaline are accompanied in few places and scheelite and minor amount of fluorite, are the ore minerals. On the basis of mineralogical constituents of the vein, vein structures, mode of occurrence of the vein and gradational contact between veins and amphibolite, the present writer conclude that the deposit was formed by segregation from the parent basic igneous rock of amphibolite. The main portions of the deposit were formed by intrusion of ore solution into already solidified amphibolite after being segregated in deeper horizone, whereas the minor portion by segregation of ore solution in situ.
The migmatitic gneiss in the Odesan Gneiss Complex has small amount of quartzite, amphibolite and marble and the Kuryong Group which contact with migmatitic gneiss unconformitly, also contains some amphibolite. Preview studies of this area had regarded that the amphibolites contact with marble had been produced by metasomatism from the pelitic and calcareous sediments mixtures, but the amphibolite is reinterpreted as igneous origin. $SiO_2$ content of the amphibolite is 45.9~52.7 wt%, which corresponds to basaltic composition. MgO content has narrow range (4.6~6.87 wt%) and major and trace element are plotted against MgO,$TiO_2, P_2O_5$, Hf, Zr are reduced and Cr and Ni are increased their content with increasing MgO. This phenomenon indicates that the basaltic magma as the protolith of the amphibolite had frationated with the crystallization of the pyroxene and/or olivine. REE pattern has smoothly decrease from LREE to HREE. Eu/Eu(0.83~1.19) show the flat Eu anomaly, which indicate small fractional crystallization of plagioclase. HREE is enriched in the garnet-bearing amphibolites. Several discrimination diagram for the basaltic magma show that the amphibolite of the study area is originated tholeiitic basaltic magma indicating continental rift environment. Due to determine the metamorphic condition garnet-hornblende geothermometry and hornblende-plagioclase geobarometry are used. Peak metamorphic temperature range of the amphibolite $788~870^{\circ}C$ and is deduced toward the northeastern part. The calculated temperature from the amphibolite has slightly higher than the temperature of the metapelites but the trend of metamorphic grade which decrease from western to eastern part progradly is similar to each other. The metamorphic pressure calculated by garnet- hornblede-plagioclase geobarometry is 4~5kb. But ilmenite-plagioclase pair enclosed in garnet show 8 kb at $700^{\circ}C$ by garnet-ilmenite-rutile-plagioclase geobarometery. The zonal profile of garnet in sample 84 shows the bell-shape profile, which grossular content decreases whereas pyrope content increases progressively. This means that the amphibolite has undergone the clockwise P-T-t path which is shown in the migmatitic gneiss of the Odesan Gneiss Complex.
Field and microscopic evidence, XRD,EPMA and chemical data suggest that parent rock of talc ore deposits of Yesan district was originated from ultramafic igneous rock. Parent rock can be divided into serpentinized dunite, serpentinized peridotite, metagabbro, amphibolite and hornblende schist. The ore deposits are highly sheared, and show many evidences of hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism at the greenschist and albite-epidote amphibolite facies. The process of steatitization is variable depending upon the composition, and the degree of alteration and metamorphism of the parent rocks. Steatitization can be divided into two processes with or without serpentinization. The parent rocks with serpentinization are serpentinized dunite, serpentinized peridotite and metagabbro, showing the following alteration process; olivine ${\rightarrow}$ serpentine${\rightarrow}$ talc. The rocks without serpentinization are amphibolite and hornblende schist showing the following sequence; hornblende${\rightarrow}$ chlorite${\rightarrow}$ talc. Formation of talc deposits is summarized as following six stages; I) Intrusion of ultramafic rocks, 2) autometamorphism, 3) metamorphism at greenschist and albite-epidote-amphibolite facies, 4) brittle deformation, 5) hydrothermal alteration, 6) purification of low-grade talc by late dyke intrusion.
The Imgye area, in the NE Taebaegsan Region, consists of Precambrian granites and schist complex at the base and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and amphibolite at cover. The granites in the area were previously thought to be Paleozoic in age, but recent geochronological data yields isotopic age ranging from $1837{\pm}82Ma$ to $2108{\pm}82Ma$ by Rb-Sr whole rock method. Therefore, basement-cover relations in the area should be reexamined. During the study, mylonite zone recognized along the contact boundary between Precambrian granites and Cambrian Jangsan Quartzite Formation. Mylonite zone has 150 - 250 m in width. Mylonitic rocks can divide into two groups; quartz mylonite derived from Jangsan Formation and mylonitic granites from Precambrian granites. Intensity of mylonitic foliation decreased toward the north. Amphibolite occurs as an intrusive sills within mylonite zone. Mineral fabrics and small scale shear zones are commonly seen in amphibolite. It indicates that intrusive age of amphibolite is synchronous to the formation of mylonite zone. Mylonite zone was reactivated as ductile thrust faults and forms the hinterland dipping imbricate zone during the Cretaceous Bulkuksa Orogeny. The near parallelism of mineral stretching lineation and long axis of strain ellipes indicates that the area is affected by a homogeneous pure shear flattening together with the variable components of simple shear.
The southwestern part of Gyeonggi Massif consists mainly of Archean Seosan and Daesan Groups, and Paleoproterozic Bucheon Group with Bucheon and Seosan gneiss complexes which are members of Gyeonggi gneiss complex. In the eastern part of Dangjin fault, Mesoproterozoic Anyang Group and Anyang granite gneiss occur, and in the western part of the fault Taean Group uncomformably overlies Archean and Paleoproterozoic Groups. Metamorphic facies of Archean Groups is mainly upper amphibolite facies which was overprinted by the second amphibolite facies metamorphism and the third greenschist facies metamorphism. Bucheon and Anyang Groups belong to amphibolite and greenschist facies and are partly overprinted by greenschist facies metamorphism which is characteristic for Taean and Daedong Groups.
The Nambu orebodies of the Okbang tungsten mine are hosted in the Precambrian amphibolite and Weonnam formation. These orebodies can be classified into two types; The scheelite-bearing ore vein occurring in the amphibolite (the Nambu 1, 2 adits) and tungsten-bearing quartz vein along the contact between the amphibolite and the Weonnam formation (the Young-ho, -1, -2, -3 levels). The scheelite-bearing ore vein in the amphilbolite is discontinuous, narrow, and highly irregular in geometry, occurring only within the amphibolite with which of the vein is graduational. Based on these feature of the mode of occurrence, the origin of this ore type might be attributed to a potential segregation of tungsten ore fluid in situ from hornblenditic basic magma of the host rock. Tungsten-bearing quartz vein, however, is considered to have deposited along the N30-60E trending fractures as a later hypothermal vein after the hornblendite was emplaced. The principal ore mineral is scheelite with minor amount of wolframite, and the gangue minerals are quartz, and small amounts of fluorite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and calcite. Fluid inclusion study of minerals from the Nambu orebody reveals that the fluids in fluorite of the scheelite-bearning ore vein attained a temperature range of $208{\sim}256^{\circ}C$ and those in quartz from the tungsten-bearing quartz vein a temperature range of $220{\sim}357^{\circ}C$. The real formation temperatures can be somewhat higher than filling temperatures, if pressure correction is made. Chemical analysis of 8 amphibolitc samples on major and some trace elements indicate that the amphibolite is igneous origin. On a Niggli diagram (al-alk)versus c, the analytical values are plotted on an igneous field, and on a Niggli diagram mg versus c they follow a karroo igneous trend line. According to the Ba, Cr, and Ni versus Niggli mg plots suggested by Leake (1964), Okbang amphibolite fall outside a pelitic field and compare favorably with his plots form ortho-amphibolites. Analitical values of $MoO_3$ of 8 samples of scheelite minerals from the Nambu orebody indicate that the tungsten-bearing quartz vein (type n) of Nambu orebody shows a range from 1. 69% to 4.38% which is higher than 0.94%~3.25% $MoO_3$ for the scheelite-bearing ore vein (type I). This fact indicates that the type II was deposited in a lower $fO_2/higher$$fO_2$ environment and under lower temperature than the type I. Analysis of major components $WO_3$, MnO, and FeO of 6 samples of wolframite from the type II veins revealed that they contain 73.35~76.2% $WO_3$, 7.94~11.63% MnO, and 10.53~14.82% FeO. MnO/FeO ratios of wolframite shows the range of 0.85~1.17 which suggests a slightly higher temperature type of deposits than other major tungsten deposits in the country.
