  • The effects of superplasticizers on fresh and hardened concrete were investigated. The experimental program included tests on the workability and slump loss, bleeding, setting time, air content, compressive, tensile and flexural strength, permeability, shrinkage, freeze-thaw durability and creep deformation. Properties of superplasticized concrete were compared with those of conventional and base concretes. Superplasticizers were observed to have an appreciable fluidifying action in fresh concrete. They permitted a significant water reduction while maintaining the same workability. Bleeding of superplasticized concrete was much lower than that of conventional concrete of the same consistency. This indicates that the use of superplasticizers did not affect the tendency of segregation of fresh concrete. The compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths of superplasticized concrete were significantly higher than those of conventional concrete. The permeability and drying shrinkage and creep of superplasticized concrete were less than those of conventional concrete, but there were no significant differences between base and superplasticized concrete. Compared with base concrete, non-air-entrained superplasticized concrete had slightly higher freeze-thaw durability. and superplasticized concrete with an appropriate amount of entrained air Eave even better resistance to freezing and thawing.

  • High reactivity metakaolin (HRM) is a manufactured pozzolan produced by thermal processing of purified kaolinitic clay. Field performance and laboratory research of concrete containing HRM have demonstrated its value for bridge decks, bridge deck overlays, high-strength concrete and masonry products. This paper discusses laboratory evaluations to assess the physical properties of antiwashout underwater concrete (AWC) containing HRM, such as pH value, suspended solids, slump flow, and compressive strength. There were not much variations of pH value with the changing HRM contents, but suspended solid test showed that the amount of suspended solids of AWC with 10 and 20% of HRM were reduced in comparison with plain. Due to the fast hydration and reaction property of HRM, slump flow was decreased with increasing HRM contents. According to the results of compressive strength test, AWC with 10 and 20% of HRM showed higher strength characteristic than plain at all curing ages.

  • The development of automobile, vessel, rail road, and machine industry leads increase of foundry production used as their components, which cause a by-product, waste foundry sand (WFS). The amount of the WFS produced in Korea is over 900,000 ton a year, but most WFS buries itself and only 5~6% WFS is recycled as a material in construction materials. In this study, WFS is used as a fine aggregate for concrete. Five types of concretes aimed at the specified strength of 240$\pm$10 kgf/$cm^{2}$ , air contents of 4.5$\pm$1% and slump of 12$\pm$1.5cm were mixed with washed coarse seashore sand(WFS) in which salt was removed and then optimum mix proportion of concrete was determined. Moreover, basic properties such as setting time, workability, bleeding and slump loss of the fresh concrete with WFS were tested and compared with those of the concrete mixed without WFS. In .addition, both compressive strength of hardened concrete at each ages and tensile strength of it at the age of 28 days were measured and discussed.

  • This study is investigated the various properties and drying shrinkage of concrete according to water content under the condition proper fluidity is adjusted, in order to suggest the method for reduction of crack by drying shrinkage. According to the results, though water content varies, slump and air content are satisfied to the planed values, but shear slump and separation happen at water content of 120 and 140kg/$m^3$ due to the overuse of superplasticizer(SP). As water content is diminished, setting time is retarded by an increase of the using amount of SP, and compressive and tensile strength increase in the range of 160-180kg/㎥ of water content, but decrease significantly at 120 and 140kg/$m^3$. Length change by drying shrinkage decrease with a decrease of water content. Therefore, considering not only drying shrinkage but also fluidity, setting time and strength, it proves that the most appropriate water content of concrete is 160kg/$m^3$ in the condition of this experiment.

  • The amount of coal ash has been increasing and development of effective use is urgently needed. Various by-products and waste are expected to be used as resources from the point of reduction in environmental load. This is an experimental study to compare the properties of high volume coal ash concrete using the reclaimed coal ash. For this purpose, the mix proportion of concrete according to the content ratio of below 5mm reclaimed coal ash (0.65, 0.70, 0.75 and 0.80). And then air content, slump, compressive strength test were performed. According to test results, it was found that the compressive strength of reclaimed coal ash concrete was similar to the content ratio of below 5mm reclaimed coal ash. And the slump of reclaimed coal ash concrete decreased as the content ratio of below 5mm.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the optimum mix design of cold weather concrete to be placed at the foundation structures in substation. The basic performance tests including slump and slump flow, air content, compressive strength and freezing & thawing resistance were conducted for cold weather concrete by varying with W/C ratios such as 40%, 50% and 60% and air contents such as 3%, 4%, 5% and 6%. The effect on durability of concrete corresponding to the increasing amount of air content and W/C ratio was evaluated and the optimum mix design was recommended. From this study, the concrete mix design containing 6% of air content and 45% of W/C ratio is recommended for the foundation concrete of substation.

  • In this study, it is contents to application on AE water reducing admixture for high early strength, which reduce to construction period for cost down in construction. In experiment result on the kinds of AE water reducing admixture for concrete strength promotion, when passed 60 minutes, while it was happened on lignin and naphthalene system about $30\∼35\%$ that loss related to slump, slump flow and air, but happened about $8\∼10\%$ on polycarboxylic system. And the result of compressive strength tests, when 32 hours passed in polycarboxylic system than lignin and naphthalene system, was showing an increase of 10$\%$. Accordingly, concrete properties was measured to condition change by the addition amount and curing temperature of polycarboxylic system. The required curing temperature to gain 5MPa of compressive strength, which is capable of side form stripping, must keep more than smallest 12. 5$^{circ}C$ when polycarboxylic system is used. As a result, AE water reducing admixture of polycarboxylic system may apply effectively to high early strength concrete

  • Nowadays the three major commercially available of organic chemical admixtures are modified lignosulfonates(LS), sulfonated naphthalene-formaldehyde resins (SNF) and sulfonated melamine-formaldehye (SMF). In this study, various sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde (SMF) superplasticizers were synthesized via four synthetic steps. Hydroxymethylation (Step 1), Sulfonation (Step 2), Polymerization (Step 3) and Neutralization and Stabilization (Step 4). In this synthesis of SMF, reaction conditions such as the mole ratio of melamine to formaldehyde and the amount of acid catalyst were changed. After application of SMF superplasticizer to cement paste and mortar, the physical properties including workability, slump loss, compressive strength were compared.

  • The mechanical properties appeared at the concrete mixed with Polypropylene fiber($1kg/m^3$, $3kg/m^3$, $5kg/m^3$) are compared with normal concrete and wire mesh one and evaluated. Achieved slump test to search effect that PP fiber gets to workability, even if the mixing amount of fiber increases, confirmed that slump value is no change almost. The no difference can be caused by hard mixture, but because of the big softness of fiber there is no effect greatly up to PP fiber mixing amount $5kg/m^3$ even with soft mixture. Compressive strengths and flexural strengths of the concretes with PP fiber and without the fiber are appeared almost alike. If examine load resistance ability by PP fiber mixing amount increase, it could know that the increase of fiber mixing amount improves load resistance ability and the toughness index is increased. While normal concrete is broken at the same time with crack, fiber mixed concrete stand in flexure load continuously after crack occurrence. In compare with wire mesh embeded concrete, wire mesh mixed concrete stands in some degree in flexure load by wire mesh crack occurrence and the test piece was broken at the same time. But, it could know that the PP fiber mixed concrete resist continuously to flexure load in bigger displacement.
