In this paper, performance characteristics of cycles were studied when mixed working fluid was used for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). Among the various mixed refrigerants for industrial heat-pump, R32/R152a used in ocean thermal energy conversion system. For simulations, R32/R152a were used in existing closed cycle and Kalina cycle which is used only ammonia and water as mixed refrigerant. Temperature of the warm heat source was 26 and 29 celsius degree, temperature of the cold heat source was 5 celsius degree. In results of simulation, Gross power of the closed cycle on R32 was 22kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.02%. When the mixed refrigerant of R32/R152a, in the ratio of 90 to 10, gross power of the closed cycle was 29.93kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.78%. Gross power and cycle efficiency of R32/R152a increased by 36% and 37% than those of existing single refrigerant. Additionally, the same simulations were conducted in Kalina cycle with the same various composition ratio of mixed refrigerant.
A series of $V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ xerogel catalysts were prepared by nonhydrolytic sol-gel method and analysed by various characterization techniques. These catalysts showed much higher surface areas and total pore volumes than conventional V$V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ xerogel and impregnated $V_{2}O_{5}/TiO_2$ catalysts. It was found that the textural property of $V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ material varies with the method and conditions of synthesis. Surface vanadates and $TiO_2$ anatase phase are the crucial factors to obtain high catalytic activities. The selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in the presence of excess water and ammonia was studied over these catalysts. Xerogel catalysts prepared by non-hydrolytic sol-gel method showed very high conversion of $H_{2}S$ without harmful emission of $SO_2$. The highest catalytic activity shown by these $V_{2}O_{5}-TiO_2$ catalysts may be due to their high surface area and good dispersion of vanadia species in the titania matrix.
The potential energy of adsorbate molecules in the main channel of $K^+$ ion exchanged zeolite L(K-L) was calculated. In K-L which adsorbs three molecules per unit cell, the interaction energies of $H_2O,\;NH_3,\;CH_3NH_2,\;(CH_3)_2NH,\;and\;(CH_3)_3N$ molecules with zeolite lattice are 61.11, 62.31, 65.68, 74.65, and 79.88kJ/mol, respectively. These values are less by 3.7∼12.6kJ/mol than $K^+$ ion affinities with adsorbing molecules. These results may be due to the facts that the electrostatic energies are reduced by the negative charge of the lattice oxygens. The distribution of adsorption sites of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ in K-L was investigated by a technique of temperature programmed desorption. The experimental value of desorption energies of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ on K-L are in good agreement with the theoritical values. It is concluded that the desorption of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ on K-L is the first-order desorption with free readsorption.
Effects of sun-dried, refined, seaweed, and bamboo salts on the quality of kochujang were studied by measuring enzymatic, microbial, and physicochemical characteristics of kochujang during 12 weeks of fermentation. Yeast count was low in the bamboo-salt kochujang, whereas that of aerobic bacteria was low in the seaweed-salt kochujang. Acid protease activity was high in the bamboo-salt kochujang, whereas amylase activity did not show any remarkable difference. Color change was lowest in the bamboo-salt kochujang. Water activities of all kochujangs decreased during fermentation with the lowest shown in the refined-salt kochujang. Consistency of seaweed-salt kochujang was the highest. Total sugar content was higher, whereas ORP was lower in the seaweed- and bamboo-salt kochujangs. Titratable acidity changed slightly in the bamboo-salt kochujang. Reducing sugar content was the lowest, whereas ethanol content was the highest in the refined-salt kochujang. Amino and ammonia nitrogen contents of kochujangs increased up to the middle of fermentation period then decreased with lower changes observed in the sun-dried and refined-salt kochujangs. Results of sensory evaluation indicated that the bamboo-salt kochujang was more acceptable than the sun-dried salt kochujang in taste, color, and overall acceptabilities.
In order to reproduce and improve the Korean traditional Kochujang(fermented hot pepper-soybean paste), traditional and improved Kochujang Koji were prepared according to the standard method investigated in Chunrabookdo area and combined the raw materials of Kochujang by the traditional habit. Amino nitrogen contents were higher in improved Kochujang than in traditional one, those were in the range from 83 to 106 mg% immediately after brewing and 191 to 313 mg% at the end stage of brewing. Water soluble and ammonia nitrogen contents were most high in the improved Kochujang which was mixed with sodium chloride and brewed soysauce as seasoning. The content of reducing sugar of traditional Kochujang was higher than that of improved one during the brewing. Ethyl alcohol contents of all Kochujang samples were 0.04% at the early stage of brewing and that reached above 2.5% after $40{\sim}50$ days brewing.
In the four sedimentary cores from Yeoja Bay, the analyses of grain size, benthic foraminiferal species compositions, assemblages and statistics were carried out to investigate the effects of late Holocene sea-level change on benthic foraminifera. The core sediments were mainly composed of fine-grained silt and clay. The benthic foraminifera were classified into 27 species of 16 genera, 30 species of 21 genera, 50 species of 29 genera and 52 species of 29 genera in Core YC-1 to 4, respectively. In the result of cluster analysis, it seemed that Group 1 (Core YC-1 and 2) of representative A. beccarii assemblages was deposited in upper bay environment and Group 2 (Core YC-3 and 4) of representative E. clavatum-A. beccarii assemblages was deposited in inner bay environment affected by offshore water. In the result of species composition analysis, the production frequency of A. beccarii was gradually decreased from low layer to upper layer, whereas production frequency of E. clavatum and P.F./T.F. was gradually increased to upward. These change patterns appeared in benthic and planktonic foraminifera seemed to reflect the late Holocene sea-level rise in Yeoja Bay.

Movement of nitrate ($NO_3-N$) through a soil profile under no tillage (NT) or conventional tillage (CT) practices was monitored to identify the effects of tillage systems on nitrate leaching and retention in the soil profile at two commercial farms in central Illinois from 1993 through 1994. Anhydrous ammonia was applied in the 1993 growing seasons, while a mixture of urea and ammonium nitrate solution (URAN) was applied in three separate applications during the spring and early summer of the 1994 season. $NO_3-N$ of each plot through a 100 cm soil depth was found to be significantly high around $20mg\;kg^{-1}$ soil in the early 1993 season. However, downward movement of $NO_3-N$ occurred during the growing season. At the end of growing season, Flanagan and Ipava soils generally retained more $NO_3-N$ through the soil profile for both the CT plots and the NT plots than the Saybrook and Catlin soils. However, there was no significant difference between the nitrate content of the two soil types in each year. $NO_3-N$ content in NT fields were slightly higher than that observed in CT fields throughout the season before harvest. It means that NT plots may reduce the nitrate leaching to the ground water.

A Helicobacter pylori urease inhibitor from Rubus coreanus Miquel has been isolated and partially characterized for aiming to Prevent H. pylori growth and decrease harmful accumulation of ammonia in human gastric mucosa. We screened urease inhibitory activities in 519 extracts library prepared by solvent extraction from 173 kinds of edible plants, medicinal herbs, herbs and seaweeds using a colorimetric urease assay system. As results of primary and secondary screening, 70% acetone extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel was selected as potent candidate, showing about 24% inhibitory activity. The acetone extract was sequentially partitioned into RCE/RCWI and RCB/RCW2 layers with ethyl acetate and butanol. The major active component in RCW2, water layer from butanol fractionation was revealed to be peptidic or proteinous substance by inhibitory activity determination after pronase digestion and periodate oxidation. RCW2-IIIc a was isolated by sequential column chromatography on DEAE-Toyopearl 650C, Butrl-Toyopearl 650M and Sephadex LH-20. The isolated urease inhibitor RCW2-IIIc $\alpha$, was highly pure proteinous substance with molecular weight of 13kDa by high-performance gel permeation liquid chromatography. RCW2-IIIc$\alpha$ has about 5 times higher inhibitory activity than 70% acetone extract, showing high stability against heat treatment and peptic digestion.
Objective: Information regarding the vitamin content of silage is limited. This study investigated the changes in the vitamin content of alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages with or without a lactic acid bacterial inoculant. Methods: Alfalfa at the early flowering stage and Chinese leymus at the full-bloom stage were harvested. The treatments for each forage type were control (deionized water only) and $1{\times}10^6$ colony-forming units Lactobacillus plantarum (LP)/g fresh matter. After 45 days of ensiling, all silages were sampled for evaluating the vitamin content, fermentation quality and chemical composition. Results: The LP inoculant decreased the pH value and ammonia nitrogen content of the alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages and significantly (p<0.05) increased the lactic acid, acetic acid concentrations and Flieg's points. Prior to ensiling, the levels of five B-group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine) and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol in alfalfa were significantly (p<0.01) higher than those in Chinese leymus. Ensiling decreased the levels of the five B-group vitamins in both alfalfa and Chinese leymus while increasing the ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content of Chinese leymus. The thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid levels in the LP-treated silage were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in the untreated silage for the alfalfa and Chinese leymus. The ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content in the LP-treated alfalfa silage was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in the untreated alfalfa silage. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in pyridoxine content between the untreated and LP-treated silages for both forages. Conclusion: With or without LP inoculation, the levels of the five B-group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine) in alfalfa and Chinese leymus decreased after 45 days of ensiling, while the ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content of Chinese leymus increased. The LP inoculant improved the fermentation quality of both the alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages but increased the thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid loss in the two forages after fermentation.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate effects of antifungal substance and carboxylesterase-producing inoculant on fermentation indices and rumen degradation kinetics of whole crop rice (WCR) silage ensiled at different dry matter (DM) contents. Methods: Dual-purpose inoculants, Lactobacillus brevis 5M2 and Lactobacillus buchneri 6M1, confirmed both activities of antifungal and carboxylesterase in the previous study. The WCR at mature stage was chopped, and then wilted to obtain three different DM contents consisting of 35.4%, 43.6%, and 51.5%. All WCR forages were applied distilled water (CON) or mixed inoculants with 1:1 ratio at 1×105 colony forming unit/g (INO), and ensiled into 20 L mini silo (5 kg) in quadruplicates for 108 d. Results: The INO silages had lower lactate (p<0.001) and butyrate (p = 0.022) with higher acetate (p<0.001) and propionate (p<0.001) than those of CON silages. Ammonia-N (p<0.001), lactate (tendency; p = 0.068), acetate (p = 0.030), and butyrate (p<0.001) concentrations of INO silages decreased linearly with increasing DM content of WCR forage. The INO silages presented higher lactic acid bacteria (p<0.001) with lower molds (p<0.001) than those of CON silages. Yeasts (p = 0.042) and molds (p = 0.046) of WCR silages decreased linearly with increasing DM content of WCR forage. In the rumen, INO silages had higher the total degradable fraction (p<0.001), total volatile fatty acid (tendency; p = 0.097), and acetate (p = 0.007), but lower the fractional degradation rate (p = 0.011) and propionate (p<0.001) than those of CON silage. The total degradable fraction (p<0.001), total volatile fatty acid (p = 0.001), iso-butyrate (p = 0.036), and valerate (p = 0.008) decreased linearly with increasing DM content of WCR forage, while the lag phase (p<0.001) was increased linearly. Conclusion: This study concluded that application of dual-purpose inoculants on WCR silage confirmed antifungal and carboxylesterase activities by inhibiting mold and improving rumen digestibility, while increase of wilting times decreased organic acids production and rumen digestibility.
