This study was aimed to investigate the possibility of using raw and anaerobically-digested piggery wastewater as culture media for a green microalga Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). Due to high concentration of ammonia and dark color, the microalga did not grow well in this wastewater. In order to solve this problem, air stripping and NaOCl-treatment were applied to reduce the concentration of NH3-N and the color intensity from the wastewater. Algal growth was monitored in terms of specific growth rate, biomass productivity, and nutrient removal efficiency. As a result, C. vulgaris grew without any sign of inhibition in air-stripped and 10-folds diluted anaerobically-digested piggery wastewater with enhanced biomass productivity of 0.57 g/L·d and nutrient removal of 98.7-99.8% for NH3-N and 41.0-62.5% for total phosphorus. However, NaOCl-treatment showed no significant effect on growth of C. vulgaris, although dark color was removed greatly. Interestingly, despite that the soluble organic concentration after air stripping was still high, the biomass productivity was 4.4 times higher than BG-11. Moreover, air stripping was identically effective for raw piggery wastewater as for anaerobic digestate. Therefore, it was concluded that air stripping was a very effective method for culturing microalgae and removing nutrients from raw and anaerobically-digested piggery wastewaters.
The efficiency of biological hydrolysis at $80^{\circ}C$ on municipal solid waste mixed with anaerobic digestion sludge was investigated in 100L batch reactors. The hydrolysis effect was observed within a day, when the hydrolysis reactor used for a pre-treatment reactor for methanogenesis, and the effect was observed during two days, When the reactor used for post-treatment reactor. For both configurations, methane production rate decreased, when hydrolysis was carried out more than a day. Gaseous ammonia in the hydrolysis reactors was successtully removed by the ammonia stripping system. Microbial diversity analysis on the hydrolysis reactors indicated dependency of microbial diversity on the configuration of the hydrolysis reactors. Carbohydrate and lactate degrading microbes dominated in the hydrolysis reactor, when the hydrolysis reactor used for a pre-treatment reactor for methanogenesis, while protein degrading microbes dominated in the post-treatment reactor.

In this study, ammonia removal characteristics in membrane contactor system under various operating conditions were evaluated. The mass transfer coefficient was used to quantitatively compare the effect of various operation conditions on ammonia removal efficiency. Effective removal of ammonia was possible with the tubular PTFE membrane contactor system at all tested conditions. Among the various operation parameters, contact time and solution pH showed significant effect on ammonia removal mechanism. Overall ammonia removal rate was not significantly affected by influent suspended solution concentration unlike other pressure driven membrane filtration processes. Also the osmotic distillation phenomena which deteriorate the mass transfer efficiency can be minimized by preheating of strip solution. Membrane contactor system can be a possible alternative to treat high strength nitrogen wastewater by optimizing operation conditions such as stripping solution flow rate, influent wastewater temperature, and influent pH.
Nitrate is a common contaminant in industrial wastewater and ground water. The maximum contaminant level set by EPA for nitrate of 10 mg/L as N. In this study, nitrate was removed using bipolar ZVI packed bed electrolytic cell that maximized the contact area between each electrode and contaminants under 600 V. Also this study investigates the simultaneously deals with removal of ammonia by operating air stripping tower. In addition to the air stripping also helped to precipitate iron ions to the form of iron oxides. Bipolar ZVI packed bed electrolytic cell was also effective in removing coliform by electrical power. In the continuous experiments for the simulated wastewater (initial nitrate for 25 mg/L as N), maximum 96.3% removal of nitrate was achieved in the applied 600 V at the flow rate of 6 mL/min.

Milking parlor wastewater contains high concentration suspended solid (SS), nitrogen, and/or phosphate as well as organic compounds. A new biological wastewater process by magnetic separation, magnetic activated sludge (MAS) process, was applied to milking parlor wastewater treatment process. A three step wastewater treatment process of coagulation sedimentation / ammonia stripping (C/S), magnetic activated sludge process and contact oxidation (CO) was proposed for removal of these pollutants. First step, C/S process recovered 96% TN and 96% PO43--P as resource for fertilizer from the wastewater. 81% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in wastewater was removed after MAS process. As a results, all pollutant concentrations satisfied Japanese effluent standards. Most of residual BOD and SS were removed by the CO process. It was estimated that the proposed process could reduce the process space to 1/7.
This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of air-stripping by DIWS(Dip Injection Wet Scrubber) system on high concentration of ammonia wastewater more than 10,000 mg/L. In the case of changing temperature from $30^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ maintaining pH 12.5 within the 72 hours, the removal efficiency of T-N by the present treatment plant was increased to 90.5% which was initially kept 70.3%. Although the high concentration of T-N with 9,120~12,955 mg/L was treated by micro-bubble through DIWS system maintaining the temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ within the 20 hours, the removal efficiency of T-N reached 91.9%, which indicated the possibility of air-stripping.

Falling film rectification involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer between vapor and liquid interface. In the present work, the adiabatic rectification process of ammonia-water vapor on the vertical plate was investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor mixture were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the mass transfer rate. The effects of Reynolds number and ammonia concentration of solution and vapor mixture, rectifier length, and the enhancement of mass transfer in each phases were investigated. The stripping of water in vapor mixture occurred new the entrance of ammonia solution, which imposed the proper size of an adiabatic rectifier. Rectifier efficiency increased as film Reynolds number increased and as vapor mixture Reynolds number decreased. The improvement of rectifier efficiency was significant with the enhancement of mass transfer in falling film.

A vertical multi-stage ammonia stripping reactor using E-PFR, which has been proved to be superior in anaerobic and aerobic treatment, was developed and a lab scale experiment was conducted. According to the change of stage number condition, the removal rate of the ammonia nitrogen in the reactor with 0-stage was about 52.5% after 8 hours (pH 10, temperature $35^{\circ}C$, and the air/liquid ratio $3min^{-1}$) However, in the reactor with 5-stage, the removal efficiency was about 62.6%. According to the change of pH condition, the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was about 42.6% at pH 9 after 8 hours, and was about 74.4% at pH 11 (5-stage reactor, temperature $35^{\circ}C$, and the air/liquid ratio $3min^{-1}$). According to the change of temperature condition, the removal rate of the ammonia nitrogen was about 51% at $25^{\circ}C$ after 8 hours (5-stage reactor, pH 10, and the air/liquid ratio $3min^{-1}$), and was about 87.2% at $45^{\circ}C$. According to the change of air injection volume condition, the removal rate of the ammonia nitrogen was about 45.8% at $2min^{-1}$ after 8 hours (5-stage reactor, pH 10, and at $35^{\circ}C$). and was about 75% at $4min^{-1}$. Based on these results, we will follow up the applicability of the actual plant in the future through continuous operation evaluation.
