The adsorption characteristics of the pellet-type adsorbent prepared from water treatment sludge for trimethylamine and ammonia were studied. The surface area and pore volume of the pellet-type adsorbent increased during calcination at $500^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the adsorbent prepared from water treatment sludge contained Br$\ddot{o}$nsted and Lewis acid sites. The breakthrough time of the adsorbent for both trimethylamine and ammonia was measured at different adsorbent weights and linear velocities while maintaining constant amounts of trimethylamine and ammonia. The kinetic saturation capacity and the adsorption rate constant for trimethylamine and ammonia were determined at different linear velocities by using the Wheeler equation. It was found that the kinetic saturation capacity and the adsorption rate constant were dependent on the linear velocity. An experimental equation could be derived to predict the breakthrough time of the adsorbent prepared from water treatment sludge for trimethylamine and ammonia at different adsorption conditions.
Nitrifier consortium entrapped in Ca-alginate bead were packed into aerated packed bed bioreactor and non aerated packed bed bioreactor and the performances of two bioreactors were evaluated for the removal of ammonia nitrogen from synthetic aquaculture water. Total ammonia nitrogen(TAN) removal rate was decrease in aerated packed bed bioreactor below 0.3hr of hydraulic residence time(HRT), but increased in non aerated packed bed bioreactor until 0.5hr of HRT. At HRT of 0.05hr, TAN removal rate of non aerated packed bed bioreactor was about 335g TAN/㎥/day and the optimum ratio of packing height and inside diameter of reactor (H/D) was 4. The performance of two bioreactors indicated that non aerated packed bed bioreactor was better than aerated packed bed bioreactor in ammonia removal from synthetic aquaculture water.
A sequencing batch reactor was operated under different pH conditions to see the influence of free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) to microbial community on ammonium partial nitrification. Long-term influences of FA and FNA were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Nitrite accumulation was successfully achieved at pH 8.2 and 6.3. The shifts in the microbial community were observed when influent ammonia concentration increased to 1 g $NH_4$-N/L at pH 8.2, and then when pH was dropped to 6.3. Both Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira were selected during the startup of the reactor, and eventually became dominant members as ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. The results of molecular microbiological analysis strongly suggested that the composition of microbial community was changed according to the method used to control nitrite-oxidizing bacteria.
Postprandial ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption in olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus fed two different feed types, moist pellet (MP) and expanded pellet (EP) diets, to satiation were determined at $12^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$ for 48 h. The ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption rates increased with increasing water temperature. However, the postprandial times for the maximum rates of ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption were shortened from 12 h to 6 h after feeding with increasing water temperature. The ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption rates of the fish fed EP were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those fed MP at 12 h post-feeding both for $12^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$. The highest (P < 0.05) weight-specific ammonia excretion rates at $12^{\circ}C$ were observed in the fish fed EP and MP at $12.1mg\;NH_3-N\;kg^{-1}h^{-1}$ and $8.7mg\;NH_3-N\;kg^{-1}h^{-1}$, respectively, for 12 h and 9 h after feeding. The highest (P < 0.05) weight-specific oxygen consumption rates at $12^{\circ}C$ were observed in fish fed EP and MP at $116.4mg\;kg^{-1}h^{-1}$ and $101.0mg\;kg^{-1}h^{-1}$, respectively, for 12 h after feeding. The highest ammonia excretion rates at $25^{\circ}C$ in the fish fed EP and MP increased to $16.9mg\;NH_3-N\;kg^{-1}h^{-1}$ and $18.3mg\;NH_3-N\;kg^{-1}h^{-1}$, respectively, for 6 h after feeding. The highest (P < 0.05) weight-specific oxygen consumption rates at $25^{\circ}C$ were observed in fish fed EP and MP at $184.3mg\;O_2kg^{-1}h^{-1}$ and $197.3mg\;O_2kg^{-1}h^{-1}$, respectively. These data are valuable for the design of biofilters and development of effluent treatment technologies for the land-based flounder farms.
Feasibility of destroying synthetic and actual leachate containing humic acids and ammonia compounds by supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) was evaluated. In this study, destruction efficiencies of humic acids and ammonia respectively were investigated at various reaction temperatures and residence times under pressure a supercritical pressure (280 atm). To lower reaction temperature, chemical oxidants were used. The experiment was carried out in a cylindrical batch reactor made of Hastelloy C-276 that can withstand high temperature and pressure. Concentrations of humic acids and ammonia were measured using a $COD_{Cr}$ method and an ammonia selective electrode, respectively. The optimal destructive condition of humic acids in the presence of stoichiometric oxygen(air) was 3 min at $380^{\circ}C$, but the temperature could be lowered to subcritical region ($360^{\circ}C$) along with $H_2O_2$ as an oxidant. For ammonia, the optimal destructive condition with air was 5 min at $660^{\circ}C$, but it was possible to operate the process for 3 minutes at $550^{\circ}C$ or 2 min at $600^{\circ}C$ along with $H_2O_2$ as an oxidant. At 2 min and $550^{\circ}C$ along with $H_2O_2$ as an oxidant, humic and ammonia compounds in the actual leachate were easily destructed and the effluent quality met the Korea Standard Leachate Quality.
The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor can be effective for treating simple organic compounds containing high concentration of ammonia nitrogen. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was about 80% at ammonia nitrogen concentration up to 6,000 mg-N/L. This result also showed that it would be possible to treat propionate effectively at free ammonia nitrogen concentration up to 724 mg-N/L if sufficient time was allowed for adaptation. However the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of granule was lower than that of granule in the reactor with lower ammonia nitrogen concentration. At 8,000 mg-N/L, the inhibition of high ammonia concentration was observed with evidence of increase of the volatile suspended solids (VSS) concentration in the effluent. It might be ascribed to the decrease in the content of extracellular polymer (ECP), which resulted to the sloughing off of obligated proton-reducing acetogens and heterogenotrophic methanogens from the exterior of granular sludge. This caused a great portion of the finely sludge to be easily washed out. Therefore, failure to maintain the balance between these two groups of microorganism cause accumulation of the hydrogen partial pressure in the reactor, which could have inhibited the growth of acetate utilizing methanogens.

In the present study, an evaporative generation process of ammonia-water solution film on the vertical plate was analysed. For the utilization of waste heat, hot water of low temperature was used as the heat source. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor mixture were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. Counter-current solution-vapor flow resulted in the refrigerant vapor of the higher ammonia concentration than that of co-current flow. Eve the rectification of refrigerant vapor was observed near the inlet of solution film in counter-current flow. For the optimum operation of generator using hot water, numerical experiments, based on the heat exchange and generation efficiencies. revealed the inter-relationships among the Reynolds number of the solution film and hot water, and the length of generator. Enhancement of heat and mass transport in the solution film was found to be very effective for the improvement of generation performance, especially at high solution flow rate.

A dynamic model which simulates the coupled heat and mass transfer within a vertical tube absorber was developed. The liquid film is a binary mixture of two components, and both of these components are present in the vapor phase. The pressure, concentration, temperature and mass flow rate of the vapor are obtained by assuming that the pressure is uniform within an absorber. The model was applied to an absorber for an ammonia/water absorption refrigerator. The transient behaviors of the pressure, the outlet temperature and the concentration of the solution and the cooling water outlet temperature on a step change at the absorber inlet of the cooling water temperature, the vapor mass flow rate and the concentration of the solution were shown.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of thermodynamic performance of ammonia-water Rankine cycles with and without regeneration and Kalina cycle for recovery of low-temperature heat source. Special attention is paid to the effect of system parameters such as ammonia mass fraction and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of the system. Results show that maximum net power can be obtained in the regenerative Rankine cycle for high turbine inlet pressures. However, Kalina cycle shows better net power and thermal efficiency for low turbine inlet pressures, and the optimum ammonia mass fractions of Kalina cycle are lower than Rankine cycles.
Biological ammonia removal system have been used conventionally for the seawater fish farming. But this process requires long hydraulic retention times and large area. Also it has a trouble of NO3-N accumulation in the system. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the feasibility of effective nitrogen removal efficiency in the sea water fish farming system by electolysis. As the result, electrolysis system showed a good ammonia and nitrate nitrogen removal and E. coli sterilization efficiencies. Because of the high salinities in the seawater for electron transfer, electrolysis is an effictive water treatment process for seawater fish farming. The relation among ammonia removal efficiency, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and electric wattage (watt) with 10 mm electrod distance isas follow ; log [$NH_4^$+-N(%)]=0.431log(HRT(sec)$\times$Watt)+0.88(r=0.950) And the relation between ammonia removal efficiency and residual chlorine concentration in the seawater is as follow; $$NH_4^+-N(%)=48\cdotlog[Residual\;chlorine(mg/\ell)+28(r=0.892)$$
