  • Species composition and seasonal variations of fishes collected by winged stow net on anchors in the coastal water off Namhae Island was studied from May 1989 m April 1990. During the study period, a total of 56 fish species were collected. Engraulis japonicus, Conger myriaster, Trichiurus lepturus, Sardinella zunasi, Ammodytes personatus, and Thryssa kammalensis predominated. These six species accounted for 93.9% of the total number and 81.3% of the total biomass of fishes collected. Fishes collected by winged stow nets on anchors were primarily small fish species or early juveniles of large fish species. Both abundance and species composition of fishes changed with season. Seasonal peaks of number of species occurred in spring and fall, while those of number of individuals and biomass occurred in spring. The lowest number of individuals and biomass were observed in winter. Low species diversity indices were observed in summer. These low diversity indices in summer were mainly due to predominance of E. japonicus which accounted for approximately 90% of all fishes collected. More species and greater biomass were collected during nighttime.

  • To study the distribution of inhthyoplankton in the adjacent water of Wolsong, samples were collected using Bongo net from the surface water in November of 1989, and February, May and July of 1990. Fish eggs were divided into Engrualis japonicus, Callionymidae, Maurolicus muelleri, Konosirus punctatus, and others. The dominant species of fish eggs were Maurolicus muelleri and Callionymidae accounting for 60.1% and 13.7% of the total egg abundance, respectively. Total of 21 taxa of fish larvae occurred. The predominant species was Engraulis japonicas accounting for 61.2% of the total lavae, and bollowed by Callionymidae(11.9%). Other major species were Maurolicus muelleri, Gobiidae sp., Ammodytes personatus, Sebastes inermis, S. Pachycephalus, Scartella cristata, and Sebastiscus marmoratus. These 9 taxa constituted 96.5% of the total larvae collected. In this area, where upwelling occasionally occurs the distribution of fish eggs and larvae appeared to be affected by the transport of the surface water during the upwelling period.

  • We examined monthly changes in the rate of fishes by-caught by gape net with wings and their immature ratio in the coast of Yeosu and Jindo Island, Korea. A minus correlation between bycatch rate, the ratio of fishes except for anchovy, Engraulis japonicus, to all fishes collected by gape net with wings, and individuals of the collected anchovy was significantly observed, implying that as the anchovy catch decreased and the bycatch rate increased. Immature ratios by the dominant bycatch species during the study is the following; Leiognathus nuchalis was 72.7~99.0%, Sphyraena pinguis was 84.0%, Sardinella zunasi was 90.0%, others (Leptocephalus, Trichiurus lepturus, Ammodytes personatus, Sphyraena pinguis, Trachurus japonicas, Mugil cephalus and Erisphex pottii) were 100.0%. In order to decrease the high bycatch rates of immature fishes in spring and autumn, our study suggested increasing of codend mesh size and developing suitable bycatch reduction devices in a gape net with wings.

  • The feeding habits of shotted halibut, Eopsetta grigorjewi, were studied by examining the stomach contents of 419 individuals. We collected E. grigorjewi samples using offshore gill net and bottom trawl in West Sea of Korea from January to December 2019. The specimens ranged in total length (TL) from 22.5 to 50.3 cm. The main prey organisms were Macrura and Pisces, while Brachyura, Ophiuroidea, Littorinimorpha and Paguridea were found small amounts. E. grigorjewi fed on Macrura in summer and autumn, and mainly fed on Pisces in winter and spring. Smaller individuals (<30 cm TL) consumed Macrura such as Crangon hakodatei. The proportion of these prey items decreased with increasing Pisces such as Ammodytes personatus and Engraulis japonicus. The feeding strategy of E. grigorjewi is estimated to maintain prey individual as they grow, but increase their prey weight.

  • In order to understand the species composition and distribution characteristics of larval assemblages in the East Sea, Korea, larvae were collected at 13 stations every other month from February to December 2018. Fish larvae were identified through DNA barcoding along with morphological methods, and as the result, a total of 104 taxonomic groups appeared during the survey. Among these, Engraulis japonicus, which accounted for 76.2% of the total population, was the most dominant species, followed by Maurolicus japonicus, which accounted for 15.0%. In addition, Ammodytes personatus, Champsodon snyderi, Scomber japonicus and Echelus uropterus appeared more frequently than other taxa. The above six species accounted for 93.2% of the total catch. The number of taxa and the amount of larvae collected in the survey area were higher during the high water temperature periods (June to October) than during the low water temperature periods (February, April and December). Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed a statistically significant difference in monthly larval assemblages. The results of the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) show that the distributions of larval community were mainly affected by sea surface temperature during low water temperature periods, and various environmental factors such as salinity, dry weight of zooplankton, and the concentrations of nutrients during high water temperature periods.

  • In this study, we conducted field surveys to investigate and analyze species and length composition of catch from gape net with wings being set in two areas - Masari, Supomri - located in southern part of Jin-do for understanding fishing characteristics of gape net with wings fishery from March to September of 2011. And with those results, we attempted to propose fishery management strategy to harvest fisheries resources continuously. Catch obtained from field surveys comprised total 78 species, which accounted for 53 species of fish, 20 species of crustacean, 4 species of cephalopod and one of polychaete. As to species composition in weight, it showed that there was 88.5% for pisces, 9.0% for cephalopoda and 2.5% for crustacea. As to catch specifics by area, there was 36 species (596,891 individual, 456,551g) of pisces, 17 species (35,815 individual, 12,909g) of crustacea and 3 species (2,876 individual, 3,004g) of cephalopoda in Masari area. In Supumri area, there was 41 species (396,898 individual, 281,457g) of pisces, 15 species (16,113 individual, 7,772g) of crustacea and 4 species (6,792 individual, 72,329g) of cephalopoda and one polychaeta (36 individual, 11g). Catch of anchovy by month recorded on high level on June, July, September in both areas. When considering size composition by month, it was found that new populations recruit to these fishing grounds on June and September. Most of bycatch species including hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), dotted gizzard shad (Konosirus punctatus), conger eel (Leptocephalous), Pacific sandlance (Ammodytes personatus), horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) were juvenile, and grass puffer (Takifugu niphobles), Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), Japanese sardinella (Sardinella zunasi) were also small in size. As a result, it is considered that gape net with wings fishery which is likely to catch juvenile needs to be set fishing prohibit period for conserving above stocks during the period excluding main fishing periods of anchovy or fisheries management such as expanding mesh size for preventing juvenile catch.
