  • This study was conducted to select low toxic insecticides against natural enemies, and to evaluate resistance stability and cross-resistance to resistance strain for the fulfillment of integrated pest management development. Toxicity of imidacloprid and spinosad to Amblyseius cucumeris was relatively low regardless of the adopting test methods. In addition, those to the Amblyseius fallacis was also low by slide dipping method. The slide dipping method was useful to eliminate repellency effect by mites to the tested insecticides. Mortality of A. fallacis to deltamethrin recorded in 1994 and 1999 was 21.6% and 7.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, the permethrin-resistanct strain of A. fallacis was maintained its resistance to deltamethrin. However, the cross-resistance to the newly introduced insecticides namely imidacloprid, fipronil, chlorfenapyr, abamectin, and spinosad. was relatively low.

  • The effect of density suppression of Amblyseius fallacis (Garman) against Panonychus citri (McGregor) on citrus tree introduced with some different ratio was investigated. When it was introduced with over 16:1 (Panonychus citri: A. fallacis) ratio, Panonychus citri was suppressed very effectively. And in case of introduced once or two times with 20: 1 ratio when the density of Panonychus citri was reached 0.5 and 1.0 per leaf, the density of A. fallacis was formed highly, but the suppression effect against Panonychus citri was not effective. Also, the density changes of P. citri and A. fallacis on the citrus tree released with 10: 1 ratio (P. citri: A. fallacis) when the density of P. citri was reached about 0.1 per leaf in plastic film house were investigated. In case of released twice at the interval of 10 days, the density of A. fallacis was high and P. citri was suppressed so effectively over two month. On the inside of canopy of the citrus tree planted in plastic film house, the air temperature was much lower than on the outside of canopy, while relative humidity was much higher.

  • Phytoseiid mites are important predators of spider mites, rust mites and many of insect pests as well. From two-year (2001-2002) survey of apple orchards in Kyoungbuk and Suwon area, 13 species of phytoseiids, 12 species of the genus Amblyseius and one species of the genus Typhlodromus were found. Among them, Amblyseius womersleyi was the most dominant followed by A. rademacheri, A. orientalis, and A. makuwa. Amblyseius rademacheri and A. makuwa were mainly found from ground vegetation. Keys to genera and species were presented with some pictorial details and ecological notes of each species. Further discussion on systematics of the family Phytoseiidae and use in apple IPM were suggested.

  • The expenment was conducted to study the foraging behavior of Amblyseius hngisp~nosus for eggs of Tetranychus urticoe. When preys were abundant, A. longispinosus repeated a series of foraging process (feeding, after-feeding movement, restmy, and searching) The time (Mean\ulcorner SD) spent for these components were 6 83+ 1.73. 3 OOi 1.66. 93.57+ 30 19. and -0.00 min., respectively. Afterfeeding movement was chractetired as a complex one-way circular moving path with a slow speed (0.09 mm/sec) and area-restricted Escaping movement was fast (0 31 mm/sec), more straight in direction, and edge-oriented walking. Positions of prey consumption of A. longispinosus were distributed in clump. KEY WORDS Foraging behavior, nlovlng path, Arnblyseius longispinosus, Tetranychus urtlcae.

  • These experiments were conducted in the laboratory conditions to determine the prey consumption of a predaciousphytoseiid mite, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha, and its ability to regulate the population of tea redspider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida. The functional response curve of the adult A. womersleyi to thedensity of eggs, larvae, and nymphs of T. kanzawai indicated Holling's Type 11: the consumption of prey bythe adult A. womersleyi increased with the prey density but the consumption rate decreased. The critical initialratio to suppress the prey population by the predator seemed to be 32:l @rey:predator) at 25"C, and 16:l at20$^{\circ}$C on kidney bean plant. The predator could not regulate any initial ratio of the prey population at 15$^{\circ}$C.^{\circ}$C.
