AC8A matrix composites reinforced with Ni-aluminide were fabricated by squeeze casting process, and the characteristics and nature of the growth of Ni-aluminide phases at the interface between nickel and aluminurn were investigated. In the as-cast composites, the reaction layer between Ni skeleton and aluminum matrix was found to be $NiAl_3$, regardless of the casting temperatures and the kinds of preforms. During high temperature solution treatment the $NiAl_3$ layer grew and formed new $Ni_2Al_3$ layer. Because of presence of the porosity formed by Kirkendall effect at the interface between $NiAl_3$ and aluminum matrix, the tensile strength of composites was inferior to that of AC8A matrix alloy. However, the composites exhibited superior wear resistance due to the formation Ni-aluminide intermetallic phases. Composite A, of which Ni skeleton was fully transformed into Ni-aluminide, shows better wear resistance than that of composite B which still possessed some unreacted Ni skeleton.

Wear behavior or SiC-particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (MMC) were investigated by pin-on-disk tests in vacuum with various pressures, argon, and air with various levels of humidity. The wear rate of 2024Al and MMC increased in the following order: in a vacuum at $5.0{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa, at 1.0Pa, in argon at 0% RH, in argon at 60% RH, in argon at 90% RH, in air at 0% RH, in air at 60% RH and in air at 90% RH. In other words, the influence or environment on wear becomes stronger in the following order: moisture, oxygen, and a combination of moisture and oxygen. In various environments, the difference of the wear rate of 2024Al and MMC was compared. In argon and air at 0% RH, the wear rates of MMC were higher than that of 2024Al. In contrast, in argon and air at 60, 90% RH, the wear rates of MMC were lower than that of 2024Al.
The forming process of metal matrix composites by die casting and squeeze casting process are limited in size and dimension In term of final parts. The melt strirring method have the problems that the homogeneous distribution of the reinforcements is difficult due to the low weldability and the density difference between the molten metal and the reinforcement. The thixoforming process for metal matrix composites has numerous advantages compacted to die casting, squeeze casting and compocasting. However, for the thixofoming process, the billet with the desired volume fraction must be heated to obtain a uniform temperature distribution over the entire cross-sectional areas. To obtain the reheating conditions of composites, the particulate reinforced metal matrix composites for thixoforming were fabricated by combined stirring process which is simultaneously performed with electro-magnetic stirring and mechanical stirring process. The matrix alloy and reinforcement are used to aluminum alloy(A357) and SiCp with diameter 14, $25{\mu}m$, respectively. The microstructure characteristics were investigated by changing the volume fraction and reinforcement size. The heating conditions to obtain the uniform temperature distribution in cross section area of fabricated metal matrix composites billet are proposed with heating time, the heating temperature and the holding time.
In this study, we investigate the recycling of aluminum-based metal matrix composites(AMCs) embedded with SiC particulates. The microstructure of the AMCs is characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The possibility of recycling the composite scrap is attempted from the melted alloy and SiC particulates by re-melting, holding and solidification in crucibles. The recovery percentage of the matrix alloy is calculated after a number of holding times, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes and for different particulate sizes and weight fractions in the Al matrix. The results show that the recovery percentage of the matrix alloy, as well as the time required for maximum recovery of the matrix, is dependent on the size and weight fraction of SiC particulates. In addition, the percentage recovery increases with particulate size but drops with the particulate fraction in the matrix. The time to reach maximum recovery falls rapidly with an increase in particulate size and fraction.

Metal matrix composites with whisker reinforcements have significant potentials for demanding mechanical applications including defense, aerospace, and automotive industries. Especially metal matrix composites, which are reinforced with aluminum borate whisker, have been used leer the part of piston head in automobile because of good specific strength and wear resistance. In this study, AC4CH-based metal matrix composites with $Al_{18}$B$_{4}$$O_{33}$ reinforcement have been produced using squeeze casting method, after T6 heat treatment, we evaluated fatigue life property of matrix and MMC composite and investigated fracture mechanism.m.
Composite materials offer distinct and unique properties that are not naturally inherited in the individual materials that make them. One of the most attractive composites to manufacture is the aluminum alloy matrix composite, because it usually combines easiness of availability, light weight, strength, and other favorable properties. In the current work, Powder Metallurgy Method (PMM) is used to prepare Al2024 matrix composites reinforced with different mixing ratios of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) particles. The tests performed on the composites include physical, mechanical, and tribological, as well as microstructure analysis via optical microscope. The results show that the experimental density slightly decreases while the porosity increases when the reinforcement ratio increases within the selected range of 0 ~ 20 wt%. Besides this, the yield strength, tensile strength, and Vickers hardness increase up to a 10 wt% Y2O3 ratio, after which they decline. Moreover, the wear results show that the composite follows the same paradigm for strength and hardness. It is concluded that this composite is ideal for application when higher strength is required from aluminum composites, as well as lighter weight up to certain values of Y2O3 ratio.

Loss factors of A356, Mn-Cu alloy and aluminum matrix composites reinforced with $SiC_p$ and Ni-coated graphite particles at various contents have been investigated using clamped-free cantilever beam method. The loss factors of half-power bandwidth of the specimens were measured over a wide range of frequencies from 50 to 3300Hz. Among the specimens, Al-10%$SiC_p$-10%$C_p$ showed the highest loss factor at the mode I, while Mn-Cu alloy showed the highest loss factors at the modes II and III. Consequently, at the mode I the Al-10%$SiC_p$--10%$C_p$ showed the loss factor of 0.00093, which is 2.64 and 1.58 times higher than those of A356 and Mn-Cu alloy, respectively.
A finite element based microstructural modeling for the size dependent strengthening of particle reinforced aluminum composites is presented. The model accounts explicitly for the enhanced strength in a discretely defined "punched zone" around the particle in an aluminum matrix composite as a result of geometrically necessary dislocations developed through a CTE mismatch. The density of geometrically necessary dislocations is calculated considering volume fraction of the particle. Results show that predicted flow stresses with different particle size are in good agreement with experiments. It is also shown that 0.2% offset yield stresses increases with smaller particles and larger volume fractions and this length-scale effect on the enhanced strength can be observed by explicitly including GND region around the particle. The strengths predicted with the inclusion of volume fraction in the density equation are slightly lower than those without.

The effects of short fiber and particle hybrid reinforcement on fatigue crack propagation behaviors in aluminum matrix composites have been investigated. Single and hybrid reinforced 6061 aluminum containing same 20 $Al_2O_3\;volume\%$ with four different constituent ratios of short fibers and particles were prepared by squeeze casting method and tested to check the near-threshold and stable crack growth behavior. The fatigue threshold of the composites increased with portion of particle contents and showed the improved crack resistance especially in low stress intensity range. Addition of particle instead of short fiber also increased fracture toughness due to increase of inter-reinforcement distance. These increase in both fatigue threshold and fracture toughness eventually affected the fatigue crack growth behavior such that the crack growth curve shift low to high stress intensity factor value. Overall experimental results were shown that particle reinforcement was enhanced the fatigue crack resistance over the whole stress intensity factor range.
In the present study an elastic-plastic strain analysis is carried out for fibrous composites by using numerical modeling. Application of homogeneous transversely-isotropic model was chosen based on problem solution of a square plate with a circular hole under uniaxial tension. The results obtained in this study correspond to the solution of fiber model trial problem, as well as to analytical solution. Further, numerical algorithm and software has been developed, based on simplified theory of small elastic strains for transversely-isotropic bodies, and FEM. The influence of holes and cracks on stress state of complicated configuration transversely-isotropic bodies has been studied. Strain curves and plasticity zones that are formed in vicinity of the concentrators has been provided. Numerical values of effective mechanical parameters calculated for unidirectional composites at different ratios of fiber volume content and matrix. Content volume proportions of fibers and matrix defined for fibrous composite material that enables to behave as elastic-plastic body or as a brittle material. The influences of the fibrous structure on stress concentration in vicinity of holes on boron/aluminum D16, used as an example.
