A formation of aluminum hydroxide by hydrolysis of nano and micro aluminum powder has been studied. The nano aluminum powder of 80 to 100 nm in diameter was fabricated by a pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method. The micro powder was commercial product with more than $10\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. The hydroxide type and morphology depending on size of the aluminum powder were examined by several analyses such as XRD, TEM, and BET. The hydrolysis procedure of micro aluminum powder was different from that of nano aluminum powder. The nano aluminum powder after immersing in the water was transformed rapidly to a nano fibrous boehmite, accompanying with a remarkable temperature increase, and then further transformed slowly to a stable bayerite. However, the micro powder was changed to the stable bayerite slowly and directly. The formation of fibrous aluminum hydroxide from nano aluminum powder might be due to the fine cracks which were formed by hydrogen gas pressure on the surface hydroxide layer during hydrolysis. The nano powder with large specific surface area and small size reacted more actively and faster than the micro powder, and transformed to meta-stable hydroxide in relatively short reaction time. Therefore, the formation of fibrous boehmite is special characteristic of hydrolysis of nano aluminum powder.
Zirconia powder coated with alumina was prepared by hydrolysis of alumina butoxide. The coated powder was obtained by a hydrolysis reaction between the adsorbed water on the surface of zirconia particles and aluminum sec-butoxide. Amorphous aluminum hydroxide was uniformly coated on the surface of zirconia particles with the thickness of about 30 nm. The shape and distribution of aluminum hydroxide was varied with an existence of surfactant. The coated layer of aluminum hydroxide consists of the fine particle size, and the zirconia powder coated by alumina hydroxide have the large specific surface area of 120 $m^2$/g, compared with that of starting zirconia powder.
Activated alumina was fabricated with aluminum hydroxide in this study. High-purity alumina gel and boehmite were prepared from aluminum hydroxide by a hydrothermal process and fired to activate alumina having a surface area of 380 ~ 480 $m^2/g$ with less loss of ignition. The aging and drying condition during the fabrication process affected the loss of ignition, the sedimentation time of the alumina suspension, as well as the surface area of the activated alumina. For pellet-type activated alumina, the pre-fired alumina gel and boehmite were press-formed and fired at $400^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ for 6 h, respectively. The fired pellets showed a low density of 2.0 ~ 2.2 $g/cm^3$ with 20% firing shrinkage and sufficient handling strength. In this study, a new fabrication process for high-quality activated alumina with aluminum hydroxide is introduced. The effects of the processing parameters on the activated alumina properties are also examined.
The rats of thermal ageing at elevated temperatures and heats of activation of aluminum hydroxide gel have been determined. The ageing was expressed in terms of diminution of acid consuming capacity. Although the actual rates of ageing were different by the samples, the slopes of their Arrhenius plots were the same. This may indicate similarity of ageing mechanisms and heats of activation of samples. The heat of activation was the mangitude of 30 Kcal/mole. Thus, rates of ageing of aluminum hydroxide gel may be greatly accelerated at elevated temperatures.
Physical studies of ageing inhibition of aluminum hydroxide gel were carried out. Sorbitol, mannitol and fructose were found to be an ageing inhibitor of the aluminum hydroxide gel. IR spectra and DTA curves showed that the ageing products of the gel by sorbitol orl mannitol were monohydrous alumina. This differs from hydrated hydrous alumina of other ageing products. This evidence indicates that sorbitol and mannitol prevent the hydrous alumina from its hydration.
As(V) adsorption on aluminum oxide powder which was recycled from industrial wastes containing aluminum hydroxide was evaluated. Aluminum oxide powder in this study was prepared by calcinating aluminum hydroxide wastes at$550^{\circ}C$. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the aluminum hydroxide wastes were changed to aluminum oxide by calcination. Arsenic adsorption isotherm was conducted with variation of ionic strength and multiple-ion systems using Ca(II) and Cu(II). As(V) removal showed typical anionic adsorption characteristics that the removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH in single As(V) system as well as in binary and ternary system. More than 80% of As(V) at an initial concentration of $5{\times}10^{-5}$ M was removed from aluminum oxide powder in As(V) single system. The effect of ionic strength on As(V) adsorption was negligible, which indicated the strong bonding between aluminum oxide powder and As(V). The removal efficiency of As(V) was higher in a binary system with Cu(II) than in a binary system with Ca(II).
Xylanase plays important roles in a broad range of industrial production as a biocatalyst, and its applications commonly require immobilization on supports to enhance its stability. Aluminum hydroxide, a carrier material with high surface area, has the advantages of simple and low-cost preparation and resistance to biodegradation, and can be potentially used as a proper support for xylanase immobilization. In this work, xylanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus was immobilized on two types of aluminum hydroxide particles (gibbsite and amorphous Al(OH)3) through adsorption, and the properties of the adsorbed enzymes were studied. Both particles had considerable adsorptive capacity and affinity for xylanase. Xylanase retained 75% and 64% of the original catalytic activities after adsorption to gibbsite and amorphous Al(OH)3. Both the adsorptions improved pH and thermal stability, lowered activation energy, and extended lifespan of the immobilized enzyme, as compared with the free enzyme. Xylanase adsorbed on gibbsite and amorphous Al(OH)3 retained 71% and 64% of its initial activity, respectively, after being recycled five times. These results indicated that aluminum hydroxides served as good supports for xylanase immobilization. Therefore, the adsorption of xylanase on aluminum hydroxide particles has promising potential for practical production.
The effects of glycerin and sorbitol and ageing of antacid activity of aluminum hydroxide gel has been described. The results under accelerated temperatures showed sorbitol had excellent stabilizing effect and glycerin had promoting effect by contraries.
