We carried out fatigue testing with materials of aluminum alloyC7075-T6, 2024-T4) by rotary bending fatigue tester. We investigated fatigue limit, fatigue crack initiation, fatigue crack propagation behavior and possibility of fatigue life prediction to the different small circular hole defect. The summarized result are as follows; Fatigue limit of the smooth specimens were related tensile strength and yield strength. In case of more large applied stress and small circular hole crack defect, the fatigue crack was grown rapidly. The fatigue crack propagation behavior proceed at according to inclusion. Fatigue crack propagation ratio appeared instability and retardation phenomenon in the first half of fatigue life but appeared stability and replied in the latter half. On other hand, this experimental data of the materials are appeared fatigue life predictability.

This study deals with the friction welding of A2024- T6 to A6061- T6; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2000rpm, friction pressure of 50MPa, upset pressure of 100MPa, and upset time of 5.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, of friction weld, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time was 1.5seconds under the conditions, the maximum tensile strength of the friction weld happened to be 292MPa, which is $94.2\%$ of the base material's tensile strength(310MPa). At the same condition, the maximum shear strength was 2l2MPa, which is equivalent to $103\%$ of the base material's shear strength (205MPa). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv 146 at A2024- T6 nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv3 than condition of the friction time 0.5seconds, and the maximum vickers hardness was Hvl20 from weld interface of A6061-T6, which is higher Hv28 then base material's. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionized and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.

A new kinematically admissible velocity field for a generalized three-dimensional flow is introduced, in which the flow is bounded by an analytic die-profile function. Then, by applying the upper-bound method th the velocity field, the flow patterns as the upper-bound method are obtained. Extrusion of elliptic sections from round billets is chosen as a computational example. Computation and experiments are carried out for work-hardening material such as aluminum alloy 2024. In order to visualize the plastic flow, the grid marking technique is employed. The theoretical predictions both in extrusion load and deformed pattern are in good agreement with the experimental data.
This study were looks at the effect of the initial cut length or stress concentration level, on the wave forms produced by crack propagation. The signals were collected, then classified visually for each type of sample. They were put into three classes according to their shapes in the time and frequency domain. Each class should domain signals which could be correlated to a certain micro-failure mechanism that occurs during the fatigue process. Classes of these signals compared, with each sample. To see if there were any classes common to the three samples. The fatigue test attempted to determine if the initial cut length has any influence on the type of signals.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of crack opening and closure in the AE activities during fatigue test. Laboratory experiment using various materials and test conditions were carried out to identify AE characteristics of fatigue crack propagation. Compact tension specimens of 2024-T4 and 6061-T6 aluminum alloy were prepared for fatigue test. AE activities were analyzed based on the phase of the loading cycle. Generally, most of AE were generated when the crack begins' opening and the crack closes fully, whereas a few in the pull opening of the crack. Also AE activity in the peak loading of cycle was different with each specimen. However, in the same material, AE activity was not affected by the change of cyclic frequency (0.1, 0.2, 1.0Hz). It was found that AE activities during crack opening and closure depend on material properties such as micro-structure, tensile strength and yield strength.
Aerospace aluminum alloys such as Al alloy 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 are subject to localized corrosion due the existence of intermetallics containing Cu, Mg or Zn. Chromate is currently widely used in the aerospace industry as the corrosion inhibitor for these alloys. However, chromate needs to be replaced due to its strong carcinogenicity. In this study, an extensive pigment screening has been performed to find replacements for chromates. Different categories of inhibitors were evaluated by immersion tests, DC polarization tests and other methods. Phosphates, zinc salts, cerium salts, vanadates and benzotriazole were found to be effective inhibitors for AA7075. Among those inhibitors, zinc phosphate was found to be the most effective in our novel, silane-based, one-step aqueous primer system. The performance of this primer is comparable to that of currently used chromate primers in accelerated corrosion tests, while it is completely chromate-free and its VOC is about 80% less than that of current primers. Studies by SEM/EDS showed that the unique structure of the superprimer accounts for the strong anti-corrosion performance of the zinc phosphate pigment. The self-assembled stratified double-layer structure of the superprimer is characterized by a less-penetrable hydrophobic layer at the top and a hydrophilic layer accommodating the inhibitors underneath. The top layer functions as the physical barrier against water ingress, while the lower layer functions as a reservoirfor the inhibitor, which is leached out only if the coating is damaged by a scratch or scribe. The presence of a silane in the primer further improves the adhesion and anti-corrosion performance of the primer.
In the present study, TiN and CrN films were coated by arc ion plating equipment onto aluminum alloy substrate, A2024. The film thickness was about 4.65 ${\mu}m$. TiN and CrN films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray equipments. The Young's modulus and the micro-Vickers hardness of aluminum substrate were modified by the ceramic film coatings. The difference in Young's modulus between substrate and coating film would affect on the wear resistance. The critical load, Lc, was 75.8 N for TiN and 85.5 N for CrN. It indicated from the observation of optical micrographs for TiN and CrN films that lots of cracks widely propagated toward the both sides of scratch track in the early stage of MODE I. TiN film began to delaminate completely at MODE II stage. The substrate was finally glittered at MODE III stage. For CrN film, a few crack can be observed at MODE I stage. The delamination of film was not still occurred at MODE II and then was happened at MODE III. This agrees with critical load measurement which the adhesive strength was greater for CrN film than for TiN film. Consequently, it was difficult for CrN to delaminate because the adhesive strength was excellent against Al substrate. The wear process, which the film adheres and the ball transfers, could be enhanced because of the increase in loading. The wear weight of ball was less for CrN than for TiN. This means that the wear damage of ball was greater for TiN than for CrN film. It is also obvious that it was difficult to delaminate because the CrN coating film has high toughness. The coefficient of friction was less for CrN coating film than for TiN film.

Sheet aluminum alloys used in manufacturing of machine structures for transportation show the difference of crack growth speed depending on thickness under the constant fatigue stress condition. The referred thickness effect is a major fatigue failure property of sheet aluminum alloys. In this work, we identified the thickness effect in fatigue test of thick plate and thin plate of Al 2024-T3 alloy under the constant fatigue stress condition, and presented the thickness effect to a correlative equation, $U_{i}^{equ}=f(R_t)$ which is determined by the shape factor, thickness ratio, $R_t$ and the loading factor, equivalent effective stress intensity ratio depending on thickness, $U_{i}^{equ}$. And we analyzed quantitatively the crack growth retardation behavior in thin plate compared to thick plate by the thickness effect using ${\Delta}K$ conversion method. We obtained such values as decrement of thickness(DoT), decrement of stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K$ (DoS) and identified the relation between them to present the nature of thickness effect in this work.

In this study, five different specimen preparation methods were introduced and their advantages and disadvantages were presented. One of them, an epoxy mounting method has advantages of constant exposure area, ease of surface preparation without touching the specimen surface during polishing or cleaning, use of small amount of material and ease of specimen reuse by polishing or etching. However, in order to eliminate unexpected errors resulting from preferable reaction at the specimen/epoxy interface and contact resistance between the specimen and copper conducting line for electrical connection, it is recommended to cover the wall side of the specimen with porous anodic oxide films and to remain the contact resistance lower than 1 ohm. The increased contact resistance between the specimen and Cu conducting line appeared to result in increases of anodizing voltage and solution temperature during anodizing by which thickness and hardness of anodizing film on Al2024 alloy were drastically decreased and color of the films became more brightened.
