Two commercial alumina powders having different particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ and 3${\mu}$m were presintered at 1120$^{\circ}$C for 2h and then lanthanum aluminosilicate glass was infiltrated at 1100$^{\circ}$C for up to 4h to obtain the densified glass-alumina composites. The effect of alumina particle size on packing factor, microstructure, wetting, porosity and pore size, and mechanical properties of the composite was investigated. The optimum mechanical properties and compaction behavior were observed for the 3${\mu}$m alumina particle dispersed composite. The 3${\mu}$m alumina particle size and distribution for he preform were within 0.1 to 48${\mu}$m and bimodal and random orientation. The strength and the fracture toughness of the composite having 3${\mu}$m alumina particles were 519MPa and $4.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology has been used in electronic device for various functions. LTCC technology is to fire dielectric ceramic and a conductive electrode such as Ag or Cu thick film below the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ simultaneously. The glass-ceramic has been widely used for LTCC materials due to its low sintering temperature, high mechanical properties and low dielectric constants. To obtain the high strength, addition of filler, the microstructure should have various crystals and low pores in a composite. In this study, two glass frits were mixed with different alumina size(0.5, 2, 3.7um) and sintered at the range of $850{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. The microstructure, crystal phases, thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated using FE-SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, Dilatomer. When the particle size of $Al_2O_3$ filler increased, the starting temperatures for the densification of the sintered bodies, onset point of crystallization, peak crystallization temperature in the glass-ceramic composites decreased gradually. After sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, the glass frits were crystallized as $CaAl_2Si_2O_8\;and\;CaMgSi_2O_6$. The purpose of our study is to understand the relationship between the $Al_2O_3$ particle size and thermal properties in composites.

Low dielectric Mullite/Glass composites for substrates were fabricated by mullite by synthesized from kaolin and alumina, and borosilicate glass. By the liquid-sintering, the composites were densified at low sintering temperature in air, allowing confiring with Cu, Ag, Au and Ag-Pd. Crystallization of the borosilicate glass was not occurred. The mullite/50 wt% glass composites fired between 950 and $1100^{\circ}C$ showed good properties for high-performed substrate, such as low dielectric constant (5.2~5.4, at 1MHz), low coefficient of thermal expansion (5.3~$5.7{\times}10^{-6}{\cdot}^0C^{-1}$), and bending strength of 130 MPa.

Influence of $Nd_2O_3$ addition to $ZnO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $Nd_2O_3-ZnO-B_2O_3$ (NZB) glass was ball milled for varying time, mixing with followed by $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-NZB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the NZB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor were 5.70 and 9497 GHz, respectively, when the NZB glass was ball milled for 6h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.

Effects of ceramic filler types and dose on the low temperature sintering and dielectric properties of ceramic/$CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ (CAS) glass composites were investigated. All of the specimens were sintered at $850{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, which conditions are required by the low-temperature co-firing ceramic (LTCC) technology. Ceramic fillers of $CaCO_3$, $Al_2O_3$, $CaCO_3-Al_2O_3$ mixture, and $CaCO_3-Al_2O_3$ compound ($CaAl_2O_4$), respectively, were used. The addition of $Al_2O_3$ yielded the crystalline phase of alumina, which was associated with the inhibition of sintering, while, $CaCO_3$ resulted in no apparent crystalline phase but the swelling was significant. The additions of $CaCO_3-Al_2O_3$ mixture and $CaAl_2O_4$, respectively, yielded the crystalline phases of alumina and anorthite, and the sintering properties of both composites increased with the increase of filler addition and the sintering temperature. In addition, the $CaAl_2O_4$/CAS glass composite, sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, demonstrated good microwave dielectric properties. In overall, all the investigated fillers of 10 wt% addition, except $CaCO_3$, yielded reasonable sintering (relative density, over 93 %) and low dielectric constant (less than 5.5), demonstrating the feasibility of the investigated composites for the application of the LTCC substrate materials.

The spinel was calcined at temperatures in the range of $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ with $100^{\circ}C$ interval to evaluate the effect of calcination temperature on mechanical properties of spinel-glass dental composites. Although the average particle size of spinel calcined at temperatures from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ was within 2.8~3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$, the spinel calcined at $1300^{\circ}C$ was 4.66 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to abnormal grain growth. Shrinkage and pore size of the spinel preform decreased and increased, respectively, as calcination temperature increased, indicating that the calcination temperature was significant to the powder compaction and the densification of the composites as a result of particle size and distribution. The optimum strength and the fracture toughness of the composite calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$ were 284$\pm$40 MPa, 2.5$\pm$0.1 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$ respectively. Optical experimental results showed that transmittance of the spinel-glass composite in the visible region was twice higher than that of the alumina-glass composite, suggesting that the spinel-glass composites possessed better aesthetic properties for all-ceramic dental crown application.

Effects of microstructure and indentation stress on fracture behavior of glass-infiltrated alumina composite for dental restorative application were investigated by the Hertzian and Vickers indentation method. Indentation stress-strain curve of glass-infiltrated alumina has showed the quasi-plastic behavior - deviation from linearity at high stress and the classical Hertzian cone crack, which could be confirmed the subsurface damage micrographs using bonded-interface specimen technique. The indentation stress-strain curves for the starting preforms are strongly dependent on porosity and microstructure of the preforms. On the other hand, the curves for the infiltrated composites are relatively insensitive to these factors. The failure of composite is originated at quasi-plastic deformation region. Damage and fracture behavior due to Hertzian stress field is theoretically examined, so that the indentation stress field plays a great role in material degradation. After Hertzian indentation annealing processing changes fracture behavior of alumina composite, so that stress field in material is healed through annealing.
