  • In this study, we have investigated the preparation conditions of 45$\times$45$\times$20(mm) square cross-section sapphire single crystal by the modified heat exchanger method using water as a coolant. Melting and solidification processes were optimized by the systematic change of the chamber pressure with the heater temperature. As a results, solidification temperature was between 1960 and $1970^{\circ}C$. The crucible was formed by handling. Therefore its shape should had the 'spiral type' ear at edge of its side. Heat exchanger affected to the temperature distribution and gradient of molten alumina. Heat flux and unmelted seed were controlled by volume of heat exchanger. Voids were controlled by the cooling rate of the heater below $0.2^{\circ}C$/min.

  • Analytical method of carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2, 2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methyl carbamate) residues and its persistence in rice seeds, rice seedlings, rice plants and soils were studied by gas-liquid chromatographic analysis using electron capture detector. 1. The effective column material for clean-up is Florisil (5% $H_2O$)+Alumina (4% $H_2O$)+absorbent mixture with rinsing the first 300l of eluants to remove impurities in the column materials. 2. The method of applying an gelatin encapsulated carbofuran to the root zone of rice plant is the longest persistence in its residues. 3. By seed treatment, no carbofuran residues were detected in rice seeds and seedlings. 4. The amounts of carbofuran residues in rice seedlings is in proportion to the soaking time of rice seedlings in carbofuran solution rather than the concentration of the chemical. 5. Applying carbofuran by root zone has the higher and the loger residual effect than broadcast. 6. Persistence of carbofuran in the high clay content soil is longer than in the low clay content soil. 7. No carbofuran residue was detected in rough rice at havesting time.

  • In this study, separation of ethylbenzene from mixed xylene was performed by using TS-1 zeolite membrane. TS-1 zeolite membranes were prepared by microwave synthesis and changing the reaction temperature. MFI-type TS-1 membranes are synthesized on alumina tubes by functional coating using 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (3CP-TMS). On top surface of interlayer, nano TS-1 crystals were seeded. To form interlayer, microwave-assisted growth of TS-1 zeolite was carried out and thin zeolite layers were produced. All of the prepared membranes are tested to separate ethylbenzene from mixed xylene at different operating temperatures. TS-1 membrane with zeolite seed synthesized at $170^{\circ}C$ compared to 120, $140^{\circ}C$ shows the best ethylbenzene separation at the operation temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ from ternary mixed xylene containing certain composition of ethylbenzene/p-xylene/m-xylene. (separation factor : 2.64, ethylbenzene flux : 1703.0 mol/$m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$).

  • Sapphire wafers are used as an important substrate for the production of blue LED (light emitting diode) and the LED's performance largely depends on the quality of the sapphire single crystals. There are several crystal growth methods for sapphire crystals and Kyropoulos method is an efficient way to grow large diameter and high-quality sapphire single crystals with low dislocation density. During Kyropoulos growth, the convection of molten melt is largely influenced by the hot zone geometry such as crucible shape, heater and refractory arrangements. In this study, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations were performed according to the bottom/side ratios (per unit of the crucible surface area) of heaters. And, based on the results of analysis, the molten alumina flows and remelting phenomena were analyzed.
