The size of various alumina ceramics used in semiconductor and display industry is required to increase with increase in wafer and panel size. In this research, large alumina ceramics were fabricated by uniaxial pressing, cold isostatic pressing and filter pressing with commercial powder and thereafter sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$ in gas furnace. The large alumina ceramics exhibited dense microstructure corresponding to 98.5% of theoretical density and 99.8% of high purity. The impurities and microstructural defects of the alumina were found to influence the resistance and dielectric properties. The volume resistances in these four aluminas were almost the same while the pure alumina was higher value. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and dielectric strength of aluminas were placed within the range of 10.3~11.5, 0.018~0.036, and 10.1~12.4 kV/mm, respectively.
Detection of microcrack in {{{{ {Al }_{2 } {O }_{3 } }} ceramics were studided by AE(acoustic emission) technique with 4-point bending test in order to evaluate the fracture process and formation of microcrack. Fully-dense alu-mina ceramics having a different grain size were fabricated by varing the hot-pressing temperature. The grain size of alumina increased with increasing the hot-pressing temperature whereas the bending strength decreasd. The microcracks were observed by SEM and TEM. The generation of AE event increased with increasing the applied load and many AE event was generated at maximum applied load. Alumina with smaller grain size shows the generation of many AE event resulting in an increase of microcrack formation. An intergranular fracture is predominantly observed in fine-grained alumina whereas intragranular fracture occurs predominantly in coarse-grained alumina,. Analysis of micorstructure and AE prove that primary mi-crocracks occur within grain-boundaries of alumina. The larger microcracking were formed by the growth and/or coalesence of primary microcracks. Then the materials become to fracuture by main crack gen-eration at the maximum applied load.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the thermal properties of ceramics coated nylon fabrics by determining far infra-red emissive properties, heat storage/release and thermal insulation. Far IR emissivity and emissive power were measured for 7~ 140n at 50'C . Three types of ceramics such as cordierite with $\alpha$-alumina, a-alumina with titanium oxide and a-alumina were chosen as specimens. Cordierite with $\alpha$-alumina was chosen to treat on the fabrics due to the good emissive properties on the fabrics. Add-ons and contents of ceramics were analyzed for ceramics and/or polyurethane coated fabrics. For the physical properties, thickness and air permeability were measured. Results showed a difference in the emissive property between ceramics themselves and ceramics coated fabrics. In the ambient temperature, there was no diffenence in emissivity among the different ceramics contents. Thermography showed that when the fabric was heated with the light, surface mean temperatures of fabrics were increased as the contents of ceramics increased, and the heat storage property was confirmed. In case of same thickness and air permeability, the thermal insulation value increased as the contents of ceramics increased because of increasing heat storage and Far IR reflectivity. So there were absorption and heat storage of ceramics for Far IR from human and reflection to human between ceramics coated fabrics and human.

In this study, unsintered, presintered and full-sintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the machinability and the optimum cutting conditions. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (1) Machined with alloy steel tool, the machinability of the presintered ceramics becomes better with the decrease of presintering temperature, but that of unsintered ceramics(white body) was extremely poor. (2) In the case of carbide, K01, the tool life in machining the white body was the longest, and the machinability of presintered ceramics becomes poorer with the increase of the presintering temperature. (3) The K01 tools exhibit longer life than the P10 tools in machining both the white body and the ceramics presintered at $1450^\circC$ or higher temperatures, but the P10 tools shows longer tool life than the K10 tools in machining of the ceramics presintered at temperatures below $1450^\circC$.

In this study, unsintered and pre-sintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the machinability, optimum tool materials and optimum cutting conditions. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (1)In the case of dry cutting, the sintered diamond and natural diamond tools exhibit better performance in machining of the ceramic pre-sintered at lower temperature, and the tool lives of both tools in machining the ceramics pre-sintered at high temperature becomes extremely short. (2)The performance of CBN tool becomes better in dry machining of the ceramics pre-sintered at higher temperature. (3)When the pre-sintered ceramics were wet machined with sintered diamond, the tool life becomes considerably long, and higher cutting speed can be used than in the case of the CBN and ceramic tools, the tool lives becomes shorter at wet cutting than at dry cutting, especially exhibiting extremely short tool life in wet cutting with ceramic tool.

This study was undertaken to investigate tribological characteristics with atmospheric pressure for three alumina ceramics of different purity, such as, 85 %, 95 % and 99.7 %. The wear test was carried out using the wear test device which was designed for this study in air, $10^-2$ Torr and $10^-4$ Torr. The friction coefficient depends entirely on atmospheric pressure and alumina with lower purity than higher purity has been much affected by heat accumulation. The friction surface of ceramics have been protected in the air by the influence of the oxides transferred from STB2. However, the protective layer can not be formed due to the decrease of oxygen in vacuum.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the purity variation of the alumina ceramics on the water lubrication mechanism. The annular surface of wear testing specimens of the alumina ceramics with different alumina purity against STB2 was rubbed in the distilled water under various sliding speed, contact pressure and sliding distance. The friction coefficient decreased lowered with formation of corrosion products due to the tribochemical reation as the sliding speed and contact load was increased. With increased sliding speed, the lower purity of 85 percent contribute largely to even degree of the friction surface, even it have about $\mu$ of 0.3 degree by the influence of a pore and impurities SiO$_{2}$. The friction surface of ceramics protacted by oxide was transfer from STB2.

By means of magnetic pulsed compaction and sintering of weakly aggregated alumina based nanopowders the jet forming nozzle samples for the hydroabrasive cutting were fabricated. The ceramics was obtained from pure alumina, as well as from alumina, doped by $TiO_2$, MgO and AlMg. It was shown that the samples sintered from AlMg doped $Al_2O_3$ powder have the best mechanical properties and structural characteristics: relative density ${\sim}0.97$, channel microhardness. - 18-20 GPa, channel surface roughness ${\sim}0.7\;{\mu}m$, average crystallite size ${\sim}1\;{\mu}m$.

The sliding wear behavior of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was examined on a novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite material and conventional alumina and zirconia ceramics used for femoral head in total hip joint replacement. The wear of UHMWPE pins against these ceramic disks was evaluated by performing linear reciprocal sliding and repeat pass rotational sliding tests for one million cycles in bovine serum. The weight loss of polyethylene against the novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite disks was much less than those against conventional ceramics for all tests. The mean weight loss of the polyethylene pins was more io the linear reciprocal sliding test than in the repeal pass rotational sliding lest for all kinds of disk materials. Neither the coherent transfer film nor the surface damage was observed on the surface of the novel zirconia/alumina composite disks during the test. The observed r,'stilts indicated that the wear of the polyethylene was closely related to contacting materials and kinematic motions. In conclusion, the novel zirconia/alumina composite leads the least wear of polyethylene among the tested ceramics and demonstrates the potential as lhe alternative materials for femoral head in total hip joint replacement.

Porous alumina ceramics with two different pore sizes were fabricated using hollow microspheres as the pore-forming agent. The relative density, total porosity, and microstructure of the obtained alumina ceramics were studied. It was found that the total porosity of sintered samples with different amounts of hollow microsphere content, from 2.0 to 4.0 wt%, was 69.3-75.6%. The interconnected and spherical cell morphology was obtained with 3.0 wt% hollow microsphere content. The resulting ceramics consist of a hierarchical structure with large-sized cells, and small-sized pores in the cell walls. Moreover, the compressive strength of the sintered samples varied from 8.3-11.5 MPa, corresponding to hollow microsphere contents of 2.0-4.0 wt%.
