  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear process and wear mechanism of the alumina ceramics in the purity variation which are used for the mechanical seal, roll, liner and dies. The wear test was carried out under different experimental condition using the wear testing device and in which the annular surface rubbed on dry sliding condition various sliding speed, contact pressure and sliding distance. In case of alumina purity 95%, there was speed range which wear loss increased rapidly owing to enlargement of heat impact force and temperature rise of wear surface. According as the alumina purity increased, wear loss decreased but alumina purity 85% with much void and defect had the most wear loss than any other alumina purity. The friction coefficient of sliding initial stage of wear curves has a large value but according to increase of sliding distance, it decreased owing to drop of the shear strength of wear surfaces.

  • High purity alumina has been extracted form low grade Korean alunite. Alunite ore was treated by 15% $NH_4OH$ solution, followed by 10% $H_2SO_4$ leaching and metallic impurities such as Fe and Ti were removed by solvent extraction method. Alumina prepared by the extraction process was 99.9% in purity. Hot Petroleum Drying Method has been employed for the preparation of uniformly fine alumina powder, using chemical reagent aluminum sulfate and ammonium aluminum sulfate extrated from Korea alunite. The sinterability of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method was shown to be improved in comparison with the one treated by other methods such as ball milling method, but dry pressing was difficult due to the agglomeration of calcined powder. The best slip of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method contained a lower soild content than the one treated by other methods. The alumina body formed by soild and drain casting with the former alumina powder showed a higher sintered density.

  • Anodic alumina oxide (AAO), a self-ordered hexagonal array, has various applications in nanofabrication such as the fabrication of nanotemplates and other nanostructures. In order to obtain highly ordered porous alumina membranes, a two-step anodization or prepatterning of aluminum are mainly conducted with straight electric field. Electric field is the main driving force for pore growth during anodization. However, impurities in aluminum can disturb the direction of the electric field. To confirm this, we anodized two different aluminum foil samples with high purity (99.999%) and relatively low purity (99.8%), and compared the differences in the surface morphologies of the respective aluminum oxide membranes produced in different electric fields. Branched pores observed in porous alumina surface which was anodized in low-purity aluminum and the size; dimensions of the pores were found to be usually smaller than those obtained from high-purity aluminum. Moreover, anodization at high voltage proceeds to a significant level of conversion because of the high speed of the directional electric field. Consequently, anodic alumina membrane of a specific morphology, i.e., meshed pore, was produced.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate tribological characteristics with atmospheric pressure for three alumina ceramics of different purity, such as, 85 %, 95 % and 99.7 %. The wear test was carried out using the wear test device which was designed for this study in air, $10^-2$ Torr and $10^-4$ Torr. The friction coefficient depends entirely on atmospheric pressure and alumina with lower purity than higher purity has been much affected by heat accumulation. The friction surface of ceramics have been protected in the air by the influence of the oxides transferred from STB2. However, the protective layer can not be formed due to the decrease of oxygen in vacuum.

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the purity variation of the alumina ceramics on the water lubrication mechanism. The annular surface of wear testing specimens of the alumina ceramics with different alumina purity against STB2 was rubbed in the distilled water under various sliding speed, contact pressure and sliding distance. The friction coefficient decreased lowered with formation of corrosion products due to the tribochemical reation as the sliding speed and contact load was increased. With increased sliding speed, the lower purity of 85 percent contribute largely to even degree of the friction surface, even it have about $\mu$ of 0.3 degree by the influence of a pore and impurities SiO$_{2}$. The friction surface of ceramics protacted by oxide was transfer from STB2.

  • Alumina is one of the most important ceramic materials because of its useful physical and chemical properties. Recently, high-purity alumina has been used in various industrial fields. This leads to increasing demand for reliable elemental analysis of impurities in alumina samples. However, the chemical inertness of alumina makes the sample preparation for conventional elemental analysis a tremendously difficult task. Herein, we demonstrated the feasibility of laser ablation for effective sampling of alumina powder. Laser ablation performs sampling rapidly without any chemical reagents and also allows simultaneous optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry analyses. For six alumina samples including certified reference materials and commercial products, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses were performed simultaneously based on a common laser ablation sampling. LIBS was found to be useful to quantify alkali and alkaline earth metals with limits-of-detection (LODs) around 1 ppm. LA-ICP-MS could quantify transition metals such as Ti, Cu, Zn, and Zr with LODs in the range from a few tens to hundreds ppb.

  • Controlled Ca impurity implanted inner crack-like pore in the high purity alumina single crystal, sapphire, had been created by micro-fabrication technique, which includes ion implantation, photo-lithography, Ar ion milling, and hot press technique. The morphological change and the healing of cracklike pore in Ca doped high purity single crystal alumina, sapphire, during high temperature heat treatment in vacuum were observed using optical microscopy. The dot-like surface roughening was developed and hexagon like crystal appeared on inner surface of crack-like pore after heat treatment. Bar type crystals, probably CaO.6Al2O3, were observed on the inner surface after 1 hour heat treatment at 1, 50$0^{\circ}C$, but this bar type crystal disappeared after 1 hour heat treatment at 1, $600^{\circ}C$. This disappearance means that there should be a little increase of Ca solubility limit to alumina at this temperatures.

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear mechanism of the alumina ceramics in the purity variation for the wear of STB2. The wear test was carried out under different experimental condition various sliding speed, contact pressure and sliding distance. According as the alumina purity increased, wear volume of the STB2 decreased and minimum value of wear volume was over to high speed side. According as the sliding speed and sliding distance increased, friction coefficient decreased owing to drop of the shear strength, it decresed largely owing to decreased of elastic modulus and thermal conductivity with decrease in alumina purity. Indicative of minimum, value of wear volume, low speed side was abrasive wear, high speed side was wear of heat softening. The friction surface of ceramics protacted by oxide was transfer from STB2.

  • High purity alumina and amorphous silica were prepared from Ha-dong kaolin by means of appliance of sulfuric acid. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the formation of aluminum sulfate was investigated. The precipitation conditions ofaluminum sulfate from the sulfuric acid solution with ethanol and ammonium hydroxide were deteremined. In the optimum condition, the conversion of aluminum oxide in kaolin to aluminum oxide powder was 85.0 percent. Alumina powder was prepared by calcination of the precipitates, and its purity was 99.0 percent.

  • This investigation was performed to collect fundamental informations concerning the behavior of glass solders on ceramic joining process. The wettability of glasses on two types of alumina was evaluated by sessile drop method. SiO$_2$-CaO-Al$_2$O$_3$system glasses were selected as solder glasses, and alumina that have different purities were used for substrate materials. It is indicated that contact angles of glasses on 99% purity of alumina substrate do not change as increasing time at elevated temperature, however the contact angles on the 92% purity of alumina substrate exhibit the strong time dependency. The time-dependent property on 92% alumina was due to the interlayer reactions occurred between the glass solder and impurities on the substrate.
