New ceramic substrates firable at low temperature (<1000$^{\circ}C$) were prepared with mixture of alumina and glass powders in CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. The substrate of alumina 40 wt% and glass 60 wt%, which was fired between 900∼1000$^{\circ}C$, shows low dielectric constant (5∼8 at 1 MHz), specific gravity of 3.10, relatively low thermal expansion coefficient (5.5${\times}$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ at 40∼500$^{\circ}C$) and excellent surface roughness (0.4∼0.5 ${\mu}$Ra). These properties were thought to be superior to those of conventional Al2O3 ceramic substrates.

Sol-gel binder was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reaction using boehmite sol and methyltrimethoxysilane as a function of aging-time. The coating slurry was composed of a plate-shape alumina in the sol-gel binder for the EPD process, in which particles dispersed in the slurry were deposited on the electrode under an electric field due to the surface charge. We studied the effects of three parameters: the content of boehmite, the aging time, and the applied voltage, on the physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the hybrid composite films by EPD. The amount of boehmite was 10 ~ 20 wt% and the aging time was 0.5 ~ 72, with a fixed amount of plate-shape alumina of 10 wt%. The condition of applied voltage was 5 ~ 30 V with a distance of 2 cm between the electrode during the EPD process. We confirmed that a structure of hybrid composite films of well-ordered plate alumina was deposited on the substrate when the film was prepared using a sol-gel binder composed of 15 wt% boehmite with 1 hr aging time and EPD at 10 V. The process shows a weight loss of 7% at $500^{\circ}C$ in TGA and a breakdown voltage of 8 kV at $87{\mu}m$.

We prepared γ-alumina beads using the amorphous alumina, obtained by fast calcination of gibbsite, and its were immersed in aqueous solution of the mixture of 21.87% nitric acid and 28.57% acetic acid. The beads thus were hydrothermaly treated at 200$^{\circ}$C for 3h, and were investigated changes of crystal, pore characteristics, $N_2$ adsorption and desorption isotherms, mechanical strengths and thermal resistance. Acicular platelet crystals of 0.1∼0.3${\mu}$m were transformed into acicular boehmite crystals of 1∼2${\mu}$m having the same crystal structure. Through this changes, we found that reversible phase transformation due to hydrothermal reaction took placed between boehmite and ${\gamma}$-alumina. In comparison to the ${\gamma}$-alumina bead before hydrothermal treatment, $N_2$ adsorption capacity was increased from 450㎖/g to 670㎖/g, and pore volume between 100${\AA}$ and 1000${\AA}$ was increased form 0.15㎖/g to 0.77㎖g, and mechanical strength was increased form 1.4MPa to 2.2MPa. Also, it showed the remarkable thermal resistance which sustained ${\theta}$-alumina crystal structure and pores between 100${\AA}$ and 1000${\AA}$ at 1000$^{\circ}$C in 40vol% steam.

Plasma resistant nanocrystalline $Y_2O_3$ films were deposited on alumina substrates through the electron-beam PVD technique. Increasing substrate temperature to $600^{\circ}C$ resulted in the textured microstructures with significantly enhanced adhesion force of the coating to the substrate. During the exposure to fluorine plasma, erosion rate of the coated specimen was higher than that of a sintered yttria specimen, but significantly lower than that of a single crystalline alumina. Considering the adhesion and erosion behaviors observed in the coated specimen prepared at $600^{\circ}C$, the deposition technique appears effective in reducing contamination particles generated from the ceramic parts in the plasma environment.
The starting materials were aluminum hydroxide prepared by precipitation method at the conditions of pH values; 7, 9, 10 and 11. The properties of alumina powder on heat-treatment were studied. After dehydrating structural water from amorphous aluminum hydroxide, the first formed phase was amorphous alumina and its specific surface are was decreased. The specific surface area was increased by dehydration of structural water from aluminum hydroxides except amorphous aluminum hydroxide. The specific surface area was increased with increase of the ratio of A1OOH to $A1(OH)_3$ in the region of transition aluminas. The rate of transition from aluminum hydroxide to alpha alumina occurred in the order of 7, 10, 9 and 11 of pH values. The morphology of alpha alumina powders was skeleton particles remaining outer shape of aluminum hydroxide. Both the elevation of heat-treatment temperature and the transition toalpha alumina decreased specific surface area and brought about the growth of particles.
This study is proposed to find an appropriate body for high expansion glass ceramics of ${Na}_2O-{Al}_2O_3-{SiO}_2$ system. The compositions of basic glasses are selected to be melted easily and to be crystallized into nepheline with various contents of alumina. The crystallization temperatures of basic glasses are determined by DTA. The crystals in the basic glasses developed by heat treatment are investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermal properties such as expansion coefficients, fusion points are measured. We find, therefore, that crystallization temperatures, crystal phases and thermal properties are affected by content of alumina.
Thermal history and thermal stress of alumina specimen, which occured from thermal shock process, were calculated by finite difference method. Stress intensity factor and crack growth in cyclic thermal fatigue were calculated from single thermal shock temperature history and thermal stress. Cyclic thermal life were estimated by bending strength after cyclic thermal shock under critical thermal shock temperature. Calculated stress intensity factor was compared with real experimental thermal fatigue life of specimen. Fatigue life until critical stress intensity factor and real experimental result were comparable.
The sintering behaviors of seeded alumina from alkoxide were studied. Room temp. desiccated powder exhibited better sintering behavior due to its packing ability and powder activity. $\alpha$-Al2O3 2wt% seeded compacts sintered with 97.5%TD, 1~3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameters at 140$0^{\circ}C$, 2hrs. Fe-nitrate doped compacts resulted in enhanced initial sintering behavior due to ionic effects of Fe3+ but failed to refined microstructure.
The optimum sol solution for making alumina membrane was synthesized by using sol-gel method with aluminium isopropoxide. Two types of supports were made from the $\alpha$-Al2O3 powder. The porosities of supports could be controlled by the forming methods and the heat treatment conditions. After the support was coated with optimum sol solution and heat-treated at 50$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hour, the thickness of crack-free membrane could be controlled reproductively with dipping time.
Change of sintering shrinkage in alumina-based multilayer ceramics was observed in various lamination condi-tions and binder burnout (BBO) temperatures. It was found that the linear shrinkages in X and Y directions were nearly the same with the BBO temperatures but a large shrinkage difference in Z direction was observed. However this phenomenon was diminished when BBO temperature was increased. A linear relationship between the laminated density and the sintering shrinkage was found and the slope was independant on the BBO temperature but dependant on the shrinkage direction.
