The possible use of bioglass,, which is one of the surface active biomaterials, as implants materials has drawn great attention due to their ability to bond to human living tissue. In the present work, the investigation was carried out to find the bonding phenomena between alumina substrate and bioglass(45S5) or fluorine-containing bioglass(45S5$.$4F), and the properties of coated bioglass. The stable bonding between alumina and bioglass was formed when heat-treated at 1150$^{\circ}C$ for 120 minutes or at 1250$^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes for the 45S5, and at 1150$^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes for the 45S5$.$4F. When bioglass coated alumina was heat-treated, great amount of Al was diffused into bioglass from alumina substrate. More Al was diffused into fluorine-containing bioglass than into bioglass without fluorine. At early stage of heat-tretment, the diffused alumina content was increased with the square root of time and it was also increased with the thickness of coating layer and heat-treatment temperatures. The alumina content became constant after its saturation for longer heat-treatment time. Coated bioglasses were crystallized to Na2O$.$CaO$.$3SiO2 when heat-treated at lower temperature, and to CaO$.$SiO2 at higher temperature.
Dimethyl ether(DME) was synthesized from synthesis gas by a one-step process in which a hybrid catalyst was used. The hybrid catalyst consisted of Cu-ZnO-$Al_2O_3$ for the methanol synthesis reaction and aluminum phosphate or $H_3PO_4$-modified $\gamma$-alumina for the methanol dehydration reaction. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, FT-IR and $NH_3$-TPD. From the XRD analysis, it was verified that the aluminum phosphate was successfully synthesized. The specific surface areas of the synthesized aluminum phosphates were varied with the ratio of P/Al. The hybrid catalyst in which P/Al ratio of the aluminum phosphate was 1.2 showed the highest CO conversion of 55% and DME selectivity of 70%. There was no remarkable decrease in catalytic activity with the phosphoric acid treatment of $\gamma$-alumina. However, when treated with concentrated phosphoric acid(85%), the catalytic activity and DME selectivity decreased.
Porous thick film of alumina which is fabricated by freeze tape casting using a camphene-camphor-acrylate vehicle. Alumina slurry is mixed above the melting point of the camphene-camphor solvent. Upon cooling, the camphene-camphor crystallizes from the solution as particle-free dendrites, with the $Al_2O_3$ powder and acrylate liquid in the interdendritic spaces. Subsequently, the acrylate liquid is solidified by photopolymerization to offer mechanical properties for handling. The microstructure of the porous alumina film is characterized for systems with different cooling rate around the melting temperature of camphor-camphene. The structure of the dendritic porosity is compared as a function of ratio of camphene-camphor solvent and acrylate content, and $Al_2O_3$ powder volume fraction in acrylate in terms of the dendrite arm width.

Sintered bodies were prepared from ${\alpha} - Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ composite powders which each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles and investigated the mullitization behavior on the process of reaction - sintering. Mullitized reaction was started by formation of amorphous aluminosilicate inter - layer and proceeded by diffusion of alumina through this inter-layer. The growth of mullite was happened along the surface of alumina and controlled by the rate of diffusion.
A mixture of aluminum isopropoxide (Al(OC3H7i)3) solution and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution was hydrolyzed in the range between pH 1~14. the powder obtained from sol-gel process was calcined at several temperatures and crystallization behaviors of various samples were investigated. The hydrolyzed sols of pH 1~6 wre clear, or near clear. On the other hand, powder precipitated from sols of pH 7~14. The sample obtained from pH 3 solution crystallized via complicated route, and $\beta$-Al2O3 and $\beta$"-Al2O3 phases appeared at lower temperature than samples from other pH conditions. And the quantity of remained $\beta$"-Al2O3 phase after heat treatment at 150$0^{\circ}C$ was more than samples from other pH conditions. After sintering, ionic conductivities were 1.3$\times$10-4S.cm-1 to 0.76$\times$10-4S.cm-1.0-4S.cm-1.
The specimens for the corrosion test were made by hot-pressing of SiC power with 2 wt% Nl2O3 and 10wt% Al2O3 additions at 200$0^{\circ}C$ and 205$0^{\circ}C$. The specimens were corroded in 37 mole% NaCl and 63 mole% Na2SO4 salt mixture at 100$0^{\circ}C$ up to 60 min. SiO2 layer was formed on SiC and then this oxide layer was dissolved by Na2O ion in the salt mixture. The rate of corrosion of the specimen containing 10 wt% Al2O3 was slower than that of the specimen containing 2 wt% Al2O3. This is due to the presence of continuous grain boundary phase in the specimen containing 10 wt% Al2O3. The oxidation of SiC produced gas bubbles at the SiC-SiO2 interface. The rate of corrosion follows a linear rate law up to 50 min. and then was accelerated. This acceleration is due to the disruption oxide layer by the gas evolution at SiC-SiO2 interface. Pitting corrosion has found at open pores and grain boundaries.
The active metal brazing was applied to bond Alumina and Ni-Cr steel by Ag-Cu-Zr-Sn alloy and the interfacial microstructure and reaction mechanism were investigated. Polycrystalline monoclinic $ZrO_2$ with a very fine grain of 100-150 nm formed at the alumina grain boundary contacted with Zr segregation layer at the interface. The $ZrO_2$ layer containing the inclusions and cracks were developed at the boundary of inclusion/$ZrO_2$ due to the difference in specific volume. The development of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of Zr atoms a higher concentration of oxygen and a high diffusion rate of Al ions into molten brazing alloy.
The effect of alloying elements of Ag-Cu-Zr-X brazing alloy on the microstructure and the bond strength of $Al_2O_3/Ni-Cr$ brazed steel joint was investigated. The reaction layer, $ZrO_2$ (a=5.146 ${\AA}$ , b=5.213 ${\AA}$ , c=5.311 ${\AA}$ )was formed at the interface of $Al_2O_3/Ni-Cr$ steel joint by the redox reaction between alumina and Zr. The addition of An and Al to the Ag-Cu-Zr brazing alloy gave rise to changes in the thickness of the reaction product layer and the morphology of the brazement. Sn caused the segregation of Zr was decreased b Al the $ZrO_2$ layer formed at the Ag-Cu-Zr-Al alloy was thinner than that of $ZrO_2$ formed at the Ag-Cu-Zr-An alloy. The fracture shear strength was strongly dependent on the microstructure of the brazement. Brazing with Ag-Cu-Zr-Sn alloy resulted in a better bond strength than with Ag-Cu-Zr or Ag-Cu-Zr-Al alloy.

The effects of coating of 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness on the mechanical property of alumina after heat treatment at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes under $10^{-6}$torr vacuum was quantified in terms of modulus of rupture(MOR) using Weibull plot. While the copper coating did not change MOR of alumina due to the nonwetting behavior of Cu on $Al_2O_3$, the reactive titanium metal coating caused a noticeable 29% reduction in averaged MOr strength. This was related with the combined effects of microcracks in coating formed during heat treatment and good bonding character between Ti and $Al_2O_3$. The effect of cosputtering of Ti and Cu, bilayer coatings of Cu/Ti and Ti/Cu were also investigated. It was found that Ti, cosputtered, Cu/ti and Ti/Cu coatings reduced MOR strength of alumina in the order listed. This was correlated with the amount of Ti at coating/alumina inter-face associated with a coated layer or segregation of Ti during heat treatment.
Alumina-zirconia composite powders for the purpose of improving fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance of alumina were prepared by the emulsion-kerosene drying method. The average particle size of composite powders was less then 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and their shapes were spherical. It was shown that the average particle size of composite powders decreased with the concentration of metal-salt in solution and the amount of span 80 added when preparing emulsions. The structure of all zirconia in composite powders heat-treated at 1200$^{\circ}C$ was a tetragonal form at room temperature. This result implied that fine zirconia particles were homogeneously dispersed in the alumina matrix.
