  • Epoxy/mica has been used as the material of high-voltage rotator stator winding due to its high insulation performance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. In recent years, however, it shows frequent changes in the load of generators and frequent automatic stops due to the significant increase in peak loads from the increase in the applied load of power facilities according to the introduction of advanced and high-technology equipments. Thus, it is necessary to develop new materials that highly develop the conventional insulation materials. Nanotechnology introduced in the present time has become an alternative plan that overcomes such technical limitations. In addition, the nano-scaled intercalation composite has been known as the material that represent excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics compared to the conventional materials. This study investigated the dielectric dispersion and relaxation characteristics of the nanocomposite, which was fabricated by mixing epoxy matrix with nano-scaled intercalation mica and clay, according to changes in frequencies and temperatures.

  • In this study, the material cycle model was applied to suggest alternative management of water quality for Jeju Harbor. The distribution of COD, DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) concentrations was reasonably reproduced by simulations on the model area of the Jeju Harbor using a material cycle model. The simulations of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations were performed under the conditions of 20∼100% pollution loadings reductions from pollution sources. In case of the 100% reduction of the input loads from Sanzi river, concentrations of COD, DM and DIP were reduced to 39%, 78% and 52%, respectively at Jeju harbor. In contrast, in case of the pollutant loadings reductions from sediment, the effect of DIN and DIP reduction relatively seemed to increase around the center of study area. The 95% reduction of the pollutant loadings from river and sediment is required to meet the COD and nutrients concentration of second grade of ocean water quality criteria.

  • Due to their flexible tailoring qualities, composites have become fascinating materials for structural engineers. While the research area of fiber-reinforced composite materials was previously limited to synthetic materials, natural fibers have recently become the primary research focus as the best alternative to artificial fibers. The natural fibers are eco-friendly and relatively cheaper than synthetic fibers. The main concern of current research into natural fiber-reinforced composites is the prediction and enhancement of the effective material properties. In the present work, finite element analysis is used with a numerical homogenization approach to determine the effective material properties of jute fiber-reinforced epoxy composites with various volume fractions of fiber. The finite element analysis results for the jute fiber-reinforced epoxy composite are then compared with several well-known analytical models.

  • The lead-based perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) material has a high molar coefficient, high crystallinity at low temperature, and long range of balanced electron-hole transport length. In addition, PCE of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been dramatically improved by over 22% by amending the electronic quality of perovskite and by using state-of-the-art hole transporting materials (HTMs) such as tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) due to enhanced charge transport toward the electrode via properly aligned energy levels with respect to the perovskite. Replacing the spiro-OMeTAD with new HTMs with the desired properties of appropriate energy levels, high hole mobility in its pristine form, low cost, and easy processable materials is necessary for attaining highly efficient and stable PSCs, which are anticipated to be truly compatible for practical application. Furthermore, Recently Pb-free perovskite materials much attention as an alternative light-harvesting active layer material instead of lead based perovskite in photovoltaic cells. In this work, we demonstrate a Pb-free perovskite material for the light harvesting and emitter as optoelectronic devices.

  • This study investigated the prospect of using peanut shells as an alternative and green sound-absorbing material. The sound-absorption coefficients were determined after filling impedance tubes of 30, 60, and 90 mm in height with peanut shells. The sound-absorption ability increased as the filling height increased, showing noise reduction coefficient (NRCs) of 0.23, 0.43, and 0.54 for the 30-, 60-, and 90-mm heights, respectively. In addition, for sounds greater than 2,000 Hz, the average sound-absorption coefficient of peanut shells in the 60- and 90-mm heights was 0.9. In summary, peanut shells were found to have good sound-absorption properties comparable to or better than those of bamboo, sisal, jute, and wool, and this research suggests that peanut shells may be useful as an environmentally friendly sound-absorbing material.

  • This paper introduces a novel approach to multi-material topology optimization (MTO) targeting in-plane bi-directional functionally graded (IBFG) non-uniform thickness Reissner-Mindlin plates, employing an alternative active phase approach. The mathematical formulation integrates a first shear deformation theory (FSDT) to address compliance minimization as the objective function. Through an alternating active-phase algorithm in conjunction with the block Gauss-Seidel method, the study transforms a multi-phase topology optimization challenge with multi-volume fraction constraints into multiple binary phase sub-problems, each with a single volume fraction constraint. The investigation focuses on IBFG materials that incorporate adequate local bulk and shear moduli to enhance the precision of material interactions. Furthermore, the well-established mixed interpolation of tensorial components 4-node elements (MITC4) is harnessed to tackle shear-locking issues inherent in thin plate models. The study meticulously presents detailed mathematical formulations for IBFG plates in the MTO framework, underscored by numerous numerical examples demonstrating the method's efficiency and reliability.

  • The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status of alternative materials in Korea and to suggest directions and goals for the development of alternative materials. The comprehensive list of national alternative materials and the list of popular and new books were analyzed using the collection evaluation method. Results first the percentage of alternative material collections based on the popular book list for 10 years is 90.1%. The production rate of alternative materials is low in the subjects of 'Language', 'Art' and 'Technology and Science'. Most of the service formats were 'text only daisy'. Second, the CCHR(Common Collection Holding Ratio) and CUI(Collection Uniqueness index) of alternative materials were analyzed using the union catalog. Libraries with a large volume of books have a high proportion of CCHR and CUI. Topics with the highest CCHR are 'Literature' and 'Social Science'. The subjects with the highest collection uniqueness index are 'religion', 'art', and 'language'. Third, the replacement ratio of new books for 3 years is 5.09%. During the same period, the average book purchase rate of public libraries was 8.83%. The average book purchase rate in public libraries is 8.83%, and it is necessary to increase the collection rate of alternative materials based on this ratio.

  • When microorganism is injected into porous medium such as soils along with appropriate substrate and nutrients, biomass retained in the soil pore. Soil pore size and shape are varied from the initial condition as a result of biofilm formation, which make hydraulic conductivity reduced. In this research, hydraulic conductivity reduction was measured after microorganism are inoculated and cultured with synthetic substrates and nutrients. Biomass-soil mixture was evaluated its applicability to the field condition as an alternative liner material in landfill by measuring hydraulic conductivity change after repetitive freeze-thaw cycles. Resistance of biofilm to chemical solution and degree of biodegradation were measured through column test.

  • When microorganism is injected into porous medium such as soils, biomass is retained in the pore. Soil pore size and shape are varied from the initial condition as a result of biofilm formation which makes hydraulic conductivity reduced and friction rate between soil aggregates increased. In this research, hydraulic conductivity reduction was measured after microorganism are inoculated and cultured with synthetic substrate and nutrient. In addition, this research evaluated the applicability of biomass-soil mixture to the field condition as an alternative cover material in landfill by measuring hydraulic conductivity change after repetitive freeze-thaw cycles. Hydraulic conductivity of silty soil decreased by approximately 1/50 after biomass inoculation and cultivation. Biofilm attached on soil aggregates is resistant to acidic or basic condition. After repetitive freeze-thaw cycles, however, hydraulic conductivity increase implies that biomass clogging can be impaired.

  • In the development of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell, one of the serious problems is the dissolution of cathode material. Therefore, the development of the alternative cathode which is stable in molten carbonate is needed. In this research, the licoo, was chosen as alternative cathode material. $LiCoO_2$ powder was synthesized by high temperature calcination method and by citrate sol-gel method. And its structure and physical iharacteristics were analyzed by XRD, 1 R, TCA and porosimeter. The conductivity and solubility of $LiCoO_2$ electrode were also measured. Homogeneous $LiCoO_2$ Powder was obtained by citrate sol-Rel method at 445$^{\circ}C$, however, obtained above 75$0^{\circ}C$ by high temperature calcination method. Homogeneous particle size distribution and fine powder were obtained by the citrate sol-Rel method. $LiCoO_2$ electrode showed higher electric conductivity ($1.7 $\Omega$^{-1}cm^{-1}$) than NiO (0.1 $\Omega$^{-9} cm^{-1}) at $650^{\circ}C$. The solubilities of $LiCoO_2$ electrode in electrolyte were varies 0.6 to 1.0 ppm during 200 hours. So, the solubilities of $LiCoO_2$ were much lower than that of NiO.
